I might be weird (well, I'm sure that I am, in a lot of ways), but I wouldn't really mind if people just didn't buy me gifts. I feel like it contributes to me accumulating clutter. But some people really enjoy buying gifts, so I can't really say, "don't buy me anything," and I feel like I need to roll with it. But, just as one example, now I have two sets of measuring cups and spoons (one of my relatives seemed to think that, somehow, I might not already have a set). There's probably a young blind person somewhere who could use one of my sets, if I can find them. On the other hand, I never really know what to buy as far as clothes go, so I don't mind if people buy them for me, except that I end up with more jackets than I need, and so on. But, again, someone can probably use one of my extras, so it's a matter of me figuring out what to do.

I should've done this a long time ago (and I thought I did at one point) but just subscribed to the GNOME release calendar on my phone, so I'm hoping that I'll get notifications there when it's a release day. I'm always worried that I'll overlook the deadline and forget to make an AT-SPI release, and I'm pretty sure that I've done that before, so hopefully this will help.

s an aside, I don't think I've ever used my measuring spoons, either. I never measure spices, but then I'm not any kind of chef, either.

Updated!
TheMistWorld 3-in-1 simulator tool got a huge overhaul.
You can now create gems, or enhance equipment, with actual game sounds. That's right, you weren't tired of hearing the equipment failing sound over and over again enough? Now you can hear it slam endlessly and not caust you any real or in-game money!
Same goes for gems. We now have an interactive, time-based enhancement mode where you can listen to gems failing and succeeding as it happens per level. If you don't check it, in either scenario, you get a text progress.
The gem simulator now has shard prices for server 1 and server 2, so you are able to compare which server has what.
Merry christmas and happy new year.

Starting with v7.68.5-1, we've unified Molly and Molly-FOSS into a single fully FOSS app, with no proprietary dependencies.

We replaced the proprietary Play Services SDK previously used by Molly with our own open-source implementation, so FCM push notifications are now supported for all users.

If you have either Molly or Molly-FOSS installed, just update like usual. No migration needed.

Molly v7.68.5-1 is already available on GitHub and F-Droid. Accrescent coming soon.

I've always dreamed of a world in which we have to optimize code for memory usage more often, but I did not expect it to come about because of market distortions by an AI bubble.

By the way, I'm an independent consultant who would be thrilled to optimize your code for you! :)

if you use firefox set browser.ml.linkPreview.enabled to false in about:config

The newest version of Firefox added browser.ml.linkPreview.* settings in about:config, which apparently serve no purpose other than popping up massive, stupid overlays where they offer to use AI to describe the bookmark you've visited 500 times.

So fuckin' stupid that we have to constantly disable more and more settings they've randomly added to get around the fact that we've disabled all the settings. It's just the fucking worst, people that run companies are all brain-dead assholes.

Dropbox is trash. Have to join a shared folder but can't because apparently I'm using 360% of my available storage, oh no. The root folder is empty, I left all shared folders, I don't have photos uploaded... Asked Claude, apparently it's a backup feature I have turned on somewhere somewhen, but no idea how to turn it off anymore. Meanwhile, on Windows it's spamming you with stupid notifications, and on the web and mobile app, it's trying to shove the premium plans up your throat no matter where you click. Even if I get this crap resolved, no way I'm even considering using that again. Can't we just have a good cloud option these days?

Krásné dobré ráno mastodonští! 🙋‍♀️🐈🐶
Kříženec lachtana, knedle, čuníka, tousťáku, kočky a brambory.
Vy si taky najděte nějaký objekt k prozkoumání. Jen pozor, jestli nemá ostré zuby. Aby vás nehryznul. 😇

in reply to Marco Zehe

Anyone using S3 (compatible) storage for incremental backups of Linux and/or MacOS machines at home? If yes, what backup software/tool? Open source preferred. My first unfocused research suggests to look at restic [1] and maybe just some scripting around rclone [2]. Any hints/links welcome! (Yes, this is part of my project to use local S3 compatible storage based on garage [3])

There is a CLI tool that lets you do common video and audio operations without having to remember complex ffmpeg syntax. There is no AI and no API calls, just old school pattern matching. It’s fast, works offline, and feels like video editing in plain English right from your CLI. For example, you can simply type:
```
ff convert my-file.mp4 to gif
```
And it will generate the ffmege command for you:
```
ffmpeg -i my-file.mp4 -vf fps=15,scale=480:-1:flags=lanczos -loop 0 -y video_output.gif
```

Somewhere along the line developing Catima changed from "fun little hobby project where I can build an useful thing and have fun" to "oh God if I make a single mistake I risk 125 thousand people losing their data, I must not make any mistakes" and I do kinda miss the old vibe.

I mean it's amazing that my little hobby project got this many people to have just that tiny bit more privacy (yes, loyalty cards inherently are tracking but at least we reduce the trackers) but sheesh 😅

OK, I am a lot more impressed with Supertonic than I thought. It has its own text processor that does some uncommon context text-based things like phone numbers, technical units, and financial stuff, that other commercial AI TTS engines like Eleven Labs, Gemini, Open AI, and Microsoft Azure don't do. And plus, unlike Sonata/Piper, it's not using eSpeak as a base.

I have a 4 year old Android phone that has not had updates for a while now. I am not going to use that as a basis for a secure IM system such as Signal.

I do not wish to buy a replacement for this phone. Neither Android nor iOS.

I use Wire IM. I believe it to be secure.

It has the great advantage over many IM systems in that you can register a personal account on Wire using just an email address.

Then you can chat and call using a computer.

Without needing a smartphone.

Flathub's "2025 Year in Review" contains many interesting statistics. I find this one the most interesting: Despite years of full support for ARM in Linux distributions and wild predictions, ARM still has an absolutely marginal share of the Linux desktop user base.
