in reply to The Matrix.org Foundation

Ultimately I think it will be a bad look for entire Matrix ecosystem for its biggest server to basically commercialize the offering similar to how other commercial products do it.

There is a difference in how matrix.org is structured, being a non-profit and for example how commercial solution such as Discord is structured, but creatures don't really care about such difference, the point will be that both will have some kind of "better" offering for paid users and that kinda sucks.

I'm sticking to my opinion which I've already expressed in the past that instead of pouring more and more money into maintaining a single huge Matrix server (and the costs will continue to rise, maintaining a huge platform for social interactions is only getting worse the more it scales) it would be simply more efficient to focus on better UX and ecosystem experience to distribute the userbase across many public servers.

This move in a way may make some creatures decide to change servers, but that will be at the cost of Matrix reputation and is not a specific goal with which those premium accounts are created.

Matrix continues to be a massive undertaking, and while I see the value in matrix.org server, I worry that the funds going into its maintenance could be better utilized by Matrix foundation by focusing in other areas that would favor further decentralization of the network.

in reply to The Matrix.org Foundation

it is absolutely ridiculous to be doing this instead of offloading to reputable community-run servers. matrix.org is *not* a good onboarding experience; in fact it is very slow as evidenced in last week's presentation of Aurora, is the source of a huge amount of abuse even proportional to its active users, and is terrible for privacy/security/anonymity given it sits behind #Cloudflare/#NSA's MITM and requires a google captcha to sign up (along with email)

Last week, I gave a talk on web browser security research at a student-organized conference. I tried to make the talk reasonably beginner-friendly, so the slides (linked here) could hopefully be useful to someone as a learning resource. docs.google.com/presentation/d…

A link in @simon's recent blog anniversary post led me to this post: simonwillison.net/2022/Jun/5/p… which contains this gem about using an LLM:

> It’s a programming activity that actually feels a lot more like spellcasting. It’s almost impossible to reason about: I imagine even the creators of GPT-3 could not explain to you why certain prompts produce great results while others do not.

I think that's no less true of today's LLMs.

@libreoffice

nice export to epub - but need to be able to put in metadata and validate - especially now with the accessibility act from EU. a lot of schema fields to fill out like kb.daisy.org/publishing/docs/m…
and Daisy / Arc doesn't really cut it in making sense of it - nor provide the right code and validation. would you, please?

Politicians around the world want to #backdoor #encryption. But #Signalgate 2.0 shows the danger would be HUGE.

“Montreal: A Metro Stuck in the Past” newsletters.feedbinusercontent…

I think the issue with accessibility is really the lack of funds at the provincial level. The STM has a programme to improve accessibility, but it has to be put on hold as the CAQ aren’t interested in funding transit.

But I agree, I wish we could bring the system forward in time.

in reply to Jean-Francois Mezei

@jfmezei I think it would be good for someone to do a full and proper analysis on the impact the REM had on transit development in Greater Montreal. I’m still on the fence about the whole thing as I feel transit planning is so broken in North America, this model was literally the only way we could have gotten a new railway of this scope. Was it worth the negative impacts? Not sure yet, but they need to inject money into the Metro before it collapses.

Jenže mezitím šla máma ven a táta to samozřejmě „rychle vyčistil a smontoval zpět“. Takže jsem neviděl, jak vypadá to velké těsnění. 🤦

Dneska tedy opět celá demontáž potrubí ve studni, nový sací koš nasazen – a jak jinak, teče to pod přírubou. Přesně tam, kde jsem to těsnění chtěl koupit. 😅

So today it is Friday the 13th and apparently I should have stayed in my bed.

Just spent way too much time troubleshooting why the curl requests I got from Firefox by using "copy request to cUrl" did not work. Turns out it is a Firefox bug. For unknown reason it adds a caret "^" before each parameter separator in the query string in the curl request, breaking everything. 😞

Apologies to Matt, I had meant to share this back when it dropped and it slipped my mind.

@Tutanota Hi! I have a calendar event that I created back in December, which repeats every week. Now that we've switched to summer time, I noticed that the event's time shifted by 1 hour (from 11:00 to 12:00). I'm not sure if this is intended behavior because I personally find it confusing. People normally don't move appointments when we switch from winter to summer time and vice versa. I'm reporting this just in case.
@Tuta

This is the 100 year anniversary of humans having an idea of what the heck the sun and all the stars actually are. If you had asked a leading astronomer in 1925 what the sun was, they would say that it's basically the same as Earth, but very hot.

In Cecilia Payne's doctoral thesis she was the first to say, from spectral data, that the sun was overwhelmingly made of hydrogen and helium.

It was later described as "the most brilliant PhD thesis ever written in astronomy".

Great day yesterday at #Devconf . Many in-depth discussions after my talk at the @fsfe booth, most of the time together with @llas .

@sofiaritz and @Tobias had a full #FreeYourAndroid workshop, showing people how to flash their phones and the rest of the time had a busy time at the #FSFE booth as well.

Big thank you to all who attended my talk, and to those who joined us at the booth.

@ozzelot Ono to i trochu zapadá.
