Scenes from a catastrophe: this is a haunting piece on the #India #Heatwaves and the future of megacities like #Kolkata, perhaps because I have read #MinistryForTheFuture.

Thank-you @erion for this very kind feedback, it has made my day 😀

Early on in my #mastodon experience adding #alttext to my images was definitely intimidating. But several excellent threads from folks like @JesseF8693 helped to clarify how valuable this small amount of front-end work can be, and now it's just a habit, and one of the things I enjoy the most about posting here.

(I do wish you could edit alttext after posting tho - @SDF 💚 -since I often make blunders.)

Almost everyone, especially employees and students, now use multiple devices such as phones, tablets and PCs. While doing things related to our personal or professional lives, we may need to share files across devices. stumbled across something that so perfectly encapsulates the experience of being a young woman working on the internet circa 1999 that I could momentarily taste the chai the guy used to make in the employee cafe at One Memorial Drive

(Greenspun wrote the first book I ever read about making things online and was an MIT professor when he dropped this one-star review on HCI researcher Jenny Preece's book)

@Orinks “slice of life” had been used since the 1890s and was routinely used to describe certain television in the 1950s. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slice_…. Seinfeld seems to fit more into the Andy Kauffman “how much crap can we make the audience put up with” mold but I don’t think anyone has given that a name.

#WebDev people, please don’t use #accessibility overlays when making your site. They create more problems than they solve for people with disabilities and they’re not enough for #WCAG compliance. Accessibility can’t and shouldn’t be automated, you should actually care, solve it at the source and listen. Here’s why: overlayfactsheet.com/#what-is-…

“I've found that our industry's biggest barriers to accessibility tend to be human issues, not technical ones. Even well-meaning companies frequently misunderstand how to make their products truly accessible. They often fail to realize that to people with disabilities, accessibility isn't just a feature of or an add-on to a product—accessibility is the product,” Says , @sommer in this article. And it is so, so true. The way companies communicate in their services, support and media matters as much. Accessibility isn't, and will never be just a set of technical rules to follow. Today I learned the marketing term “social listening” which sounds like a shady sanitization of eavesdropping & surveillance - and apparently there’s a minor panic over discord servers being “invisible” to marketers and Gen Z disappearing from their dashboards. 🙃

I love it when #ElevenLabs unexpectedly goes completely off the rails. I tried writing a thing like it was giving a speech at the opening of a hotel and getting stuff wrong. Of course I put in some keyboard mashing to see what it would do, and it just loses it. It’s imotions go all over the place. I suppose having someone called Brian Shitface cutting the ribbon doesn’t exactly help…
