Ahhhhhh, the sounds of la Cumbia. This is beautiful. I don't really like what my mom listens to with Colombian music but this, this is some good stuff. Enjoy.

#WhereIsMySurprisedFace The engineers at the #Raspberry foundation "invented" a new non-standard 5V/5A USB PD mode for the #RPi5.

Will these people ever learn?

Here's the relevant part from the current USB PD standard, Release 3.1, Version 1.8, page 76. A 5V/5A mode simply does not exist. If you need 25W, you have the option to use 9V with 3A.That gives you 27W. So instead of adding that option to the board, they opted for developing their own non-standard power brick. Le sigh.

Wow, what a wonderful book. The author is a discovery as well, mostly known for her best-seller "Saint X". But this is so much deeper with an amazing language and imagery. The narrator Ell Potter may also be known to some readers, esp. if you read Hamnet...

"Friends"-Star Matthew Perry Medienberichten zufolge gestorben

Sím vás, samozřejmě už jsme tady, auto vyzvednuté, kufry odtahané, večeře snězená (přirovnal bych to k průletu sarančat přes pole), dvě malá piva se vlastně odpařila, a teď už veget. Fotky zítra, dneska jenom naše "apartmá". Tohle je náš rajon, děti mají spodní patro, ale to už fotit nebudu, no už tam strávili půl hodiny a vypadá to hůř jak Hirošima v srpnu 45.

With github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull… landing a couple of hours ago (and github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull… helping it cross the finish line very soon), you'll finally be able to easily try rustc's cranelift codegen backend on nightly for improved compile times in debug mode — with usually "worse codegen" compared to LLVM of course.

Distributed via rustup on many Tier 1 targets, integrated in cargo, an env var or a couple lines in Cargo.toml and that's it.

It's been years in the making. Very excited about this!

Alice was on the London Eye today, as one of her school friend’s decided to have their birthday party on it, and she took this picture which I ran through #SeeingAI and #BeMyAI because I really like both descriptions, so one of them has been included in the alt-text, and the other is threaded as it wouldn’t fit within the character limit. I think they bring something unique to the table in each case.
in reply to x0

There’s definitely something fishy going on with Microsoft and their accessibility apps. The slow international rollout of Seeing AI, limiting Soundscape to a few countries, its sudden closure, no Android apps, no commit history in open-source Soundscape, something’s not right here. Part of it is probably the infamous big tech bureaucracy rearing its ugly head, but I feel like there’s more to it than is publicly being revealed.
in reply to x0

@x0 Be Mmy Eyes is actually a lot more secure than I would have expected. They actually do certificate pinning and are fairly aggressive in not letting their traffic be intercepted, preferring to break the app completely rather than let you see what it’s actually doing. I haven’t managed to get further than that, there’s no Apple Silicon version and I don’t have a jailbroken iOS device, so I haven’t been able Tod o any more reverse-engineering.

This is the best frozen har gow. It tastes better than many lower end takeout dimsum spots in San Francisco. Just steam or microwave it yourself at home.

I know this because I’ve eaten many bad frozen har gows before finding this one!

Instant noodles don’t have to be ‘bad’. In Asia they’re almost an art form: there are some which are seen to be more artisanal, more restaurant quality. Tseng noodles are that for me: springy and bouncy Taiwanese noodles coated in a sesame sauce

Any Taiwanese product that brands itself ‘Go Cha’ (古早) tends to be exceptional because that’s the Hokkien word for ‘old timey taste’

This oyster vermicelli pack is the best thing you’ll get if you don’t live near a large Taiwanese community. It’s also the taste of my childhood (my grandmother made this dish often)

While I'm sick, I'm reading #GlobalEntranceExamination by #MuSuLi: novelupdates.com/series/global… (a rec from @geraineon). I'm about a quarter of the way through and it's a fast, fun read!

You Huo, his uncle and his cousin are transported into a mysterious 'examination' system, where the questions could easily kill any of the examinees. Breaking the rules to test the system, You Huo gets under the skin of Invigilator 001, but the two can't get away from each other.

Global Examination: not very spoilery thoughts about the main cp

#GlobalExamination: really enjoying the relationship between the main couple here! They are both rule-breakers and tease each other relentlessly, but despite a huge number of unknowns about the whole situation to begin with, they very quickly start to trust each other and respect each other’s competence.

Plus, You Huo’s cousin goes from wtf-my-cousin-has-a-boyfriend?!?!? to calling Qin Jiu/Invigilator 001 ‘brother’ within about two chapters, and that’s :blobcatchefkiss:

I like the sound of this.

Copyright laws that are balanced-- wouldn't that be nice? Licensing on top of copyright is insane.

This shouldn't need to be said at this point, but given the new Speaker's apparent beliefs, it bears repeating:

While there are weaknesses in US election infrastructure, there is simply no evidence whatsoever that the 2020 presidential election was "stolen" or that technical attacks in any way altered its outcome.

58 of my colleagues and I wrote this shortly after these nonsensical conspiracy theories began to spread in 2020. It remains as true now as it was then. mattblaze.org/papers/election2…

My research and scholarship focuses on election security. I am well aware of the ins and outs of the technical vulnerabilities in various voting and tallying technologies - it's what I live and breathe in my day job. It can be frightening. But despite this, I'm optimistic about election integrity. Just as I know that there are weaknesses, I also know that there are practical solutions and safeguards that can counter them.
in reply to Matt Blaze

The claims about the ways in which the 2020 election was supposedly stolen were voluminous and fluid. Internet packets that somehow flipped votes, Italian satellites hijacked to alter US vote tallies, German servers that controlled US election systems, ballot drop boxes stuffed with forged Chinese ballots, and on and on. The claims came in faster than you could keep up.

What they all had in common was that every one was fantastic nonsense, obvious to anyone familiar with real elections.

I need a #XMPP#Jabber server to test Spades with so I'm about to set up the server for blakes.dev (and blakeslabs.com). I'd like to use Metronome but I'm not sure if or how well it works with Docker¹. Prosody doesn't support MIX (a must for me) and it's also old, crusty, and you know, replaced by Metronome. So now I'm looking at Ejabberd² which doesn't seem to have a community modules system so I don't think I can (easily) extend features onto it, like MIX-MUC, the way Prosody (and Metronome) could. I believe there's also Openfire which I've seen is also behind on features (it doesn't support XEP-0050 Blocking Command?).

I'm probably going to set up Ejabberd but some advice would be appreciated.

¹ I'm using Docker to manage all my shit, like how most of us nerds use Kubernetes. Isn't K8s used for multiple-server servers? I'm only running one VPS, so it's not that useful for me.² They said they were adding Matrix support some time back. That would be very useful to me. I don't see any mention of it in the docs or even the source code though.
