Vielen Dank! Angenehm schmerzfrei.

thanks for the tip. They responded „We’ve received your request. We typically respond within a few days, but some cases can take a little longer.“ That seems better.

there's something mildly ironic about the head office of a parcel delivery company being on the 2nd floor. One of the most irritating things for delivery drivers and it's baked in to every communique they send.

If I didn't have to pay over $700 for Dragon naturally speaking, I'd also get J-dictate for myself because I really enjoy speaking over typing even though I am good at typing.
in reply to Nick's world

I can't imagine using my voice instead of my fingers. I never use Siri and only use the smart speakers for limited things, usually when my hands are occupied. I guess I grew up not being welcome to talk very much, I could always type. It also freed me from not being able to communicate well as a child, so I suppose in that regard I've never considered it as something to be replaced by a more efficient method.
in reply to Sean Randall

@cachondo It's something I considered because even though I can type be there are times when its a pain and if I'm ever going to have a job heavy in writing, I'd rather speak than type.

in reply to kurtseifried (he/him)

@kurtseifried hang on, I have a much nicer version coming up. It's just a little slow... running git blame on all files in 200+ tags takes a while

Now, because of Google's no-opt-out policy on AI searches, every search uses ten times more power than they used to. Want to find out what movie Danny DeVito did with Arnold Schwarzenegger? Now, you have to weigh your curiosity against the health of the planet.
Don't Google that! It was Twins! Jeez, didn't you read the start of this post?

- Patricia, you ancient programmer, how does one get good at programming, please share your wisdom.

*thinks*

Well, you write a lot of bad code, like a hole shitton of bad code, then you maintain it for a few years and then you look at it again and say holy shit, and that’s when you know you’ve gotten better. Rinse and repeat for ever.

I am a straight, cis male. For the most part, I'm OK with that, but if I could just make facial hair stop existing in my life without changing anything else, that'd be cool. I really, really hate shaving. I also hate not shaving because I put it off for too long, since I hate shaving. I just want nothing to do with any of it.

in reply to Patrick Perdue

I don't enjoy it either. When my soup is more on than in me is about time for a trim. Then I just lop it all off and end up looking like a teen.

I left my Melbourne hotel at 8:30am, Tuesday 29 October.

I caught a 12:00pm flight from Melbourne to San Francisco also on Tuesday 29 October.

Then I caught another 12:00pm flight from San Francisco to Newark, still on Tuesday 29 October.

I have walked into the door of my house in Buffalo at 11:30pm — 23:30 on Tuesday 29 October.

I have spent 30 hours traveling and have not gotten away from Tuesday 29 October.

✨ Sliding Sync at the Matrix Conference — mnt.io/articles/sliding-sync-a…

I have presented Sliding Sync, a novel, fast and efficient synchronisation mechanism for the Matrix protocol, at the first Matrix Conference in Berlin. It's been many many months that I'm working on this project, and I'm joyful it's now available to everyone for a better Matrix user experience!

The article contains the recording + slides. I've highlighted other talks too.

I don’t get political very often on here, but this is gold! And yes, since this election will have worldwide repercussions, many of us outside the U.S. definitely hope for a particular winner. youtube.com/watch?v=se-didBGn8…

So, whats the trick in reading the APple INtelligence output preview in MacOs? I see a popover, but VoiceOver simply reads the controls in that, not the content.
in reply to Pitermach

@pitermach aa-ha. How intuitive. Or perhaps its me not using VO j as often I should. Thanks so much!
in reply to Jakob Rosin

I only discovered it by trying everything during the beta cycle and vaguely remembering that key let you escape a popup lol. The proofing tools are even more fun if you decide to try those out because they display 2 popovers. One has previous and next controls which step through every suggested change. When you press it the cursor is moved to where the change was made but there’s also a second popup displayed that explains what was done and why with a revert button. If you want to get back to the main controls to review the next change, you have to first press escape to close that popup otherwise vo-j won’t work.

We just released a big update, with support for the following:

- Full Table of Contents (during export)
- Apple Intelligence Writing Tools (where available)
- New iOS Shortcuts (via Control Center and iPhone Action Button)

We also fixed a weird crash when dragging a project from Backup onto the Library. For full release notes, see ulysses.app/release-notes

The last time I turned on my Mac Mini was two weeks ago when I recabled the desk.

The time before that was in June 2023 when I moved into this apartment.

I have two of them (one m1, one Intel) on top of each next to me on my work desk. I don't use them even once a month.

New song by the fabulous Marsh Family for these trying times.

"Bohemian Trumpsody" - Marsh Family adaptation of "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen about trump.

How is this real life? Wish it was fantasy!
Ought to be landslide, not a race to the final week
Look in his eyes, it’s up to you guys, you see
He’s just a playboy, he feels no empathy
Because he’s kinda dumb, kinda slow
Little lie, shitty joke
Every single swing vote really really matters to liberty

Of course, another interesting side effect of this iPhone 8 battery, is that it will happily do things like play music or Youtube at 0% for a good half an hour or so, LOL.
in reply to Мира🇧🇬🇭🇺

@tardis That's not all that bad, but you'll likely hit the performance dynamic throttle routines eventually.
in reply to Adam MacLeod

Meh I guess I will. If that happens, I will just have to buy a new phone. Which i don't want to do, because no more mute switch.
in reply to Мира🇧🇬🇭🇺

@tardis I have nothing bad to say about keeping an old phone as long as it works, but I do wonder about your misgivings with the mute switch. As far as I can tell there's no disadvantage to the action button. you can make it mute the phone, or you can make it do something else entirely. It's way easier to press through a pocket, and can't get dirt stuck in it
in reply to Simon Jaeger (Procrastodon)

I just like the switch, it has existed ever since I bought an iPhone. and I have also never had dirt stick in it. Even when I went to the beach. I just like it more that is, it was a unique iPhone thing I haven't seen on other phones or brands over here, and it makes me sad to not see it anymore. I am going to buy a keyboard, or more storage, so I might have the chance to look at a newer iPhone and see if I like them before I say anything else. I kinda doubt it, a little, but yeah. I still have my 7, and it works. I just think it's too early to retire this one, yet. It's only like, threey years old.
in reply to Мира🇧🇬🇭🇺

I also don't think the newer iPhones are some major upgrade besides AI which I do not wish to use. So, if the battery goes bad, I'll just probably change it, and go with it till it has support for like, four or so more years.
in reply to Мира🇧🇬🇭🇺

@tardis Well, you may have an option to get your battery replaced, but I am unfamiliar with how Apple handles that in your country. If you do want to keep your phone, but get a new battery, you should contact your nearest Apple Store and see if their Genius Bar will do it for you.

I love reading articles about #CSS anchors and dialogs which specifically mentions accessibility advantages over solutions created with JS and then half the examples aren't working on mobile because the applied styling / used content is too large to tap on the exit button / backdrop or see how it's positioned 🤦‍♂️

@tardis I wanted to get media storage off the local disks across both instances. Its bad for the SSD, and I'd rather break Linode's, because they have millions to replace it, LOL.

in reply to Adam MacLeod

That, didn't work that well, it sees it as an attachment here. You broke it! Nooo!
in reply to Мира🇧🇬🇭🇺

It plays it, but I have to open the link to play it. Like how Go to social did things before they implemented their player, which now makes it work with web clients.
in reply to Adam MacLeod

I am pretty sure, though. When gts didn't have a player, all the media attachments people posted via masto were seen as links. You should've seen the mess. Somehow, though, not a lot of attachments. LOL
in reply to Adam MacLeod

Noooo, that's pretty though. I mean, it works, but not like masto stuff works. :D

wow, I didn't know that curl can subscribe on and publish on #mqtt topics. That's awesome as I feel the mqtt client is somewhat awkward to use and a lot of mqtt browsers suck.
Thanks!

I looked at the first ten minutes of the GitHub Universe intro yday and the frequency of AI getting mentioned exhausted my ears immediately and I had to shut down the stream and go do something useful. For health reasons.
in reply to daniel:// stenberg://

I'm immediately turned off by any product that hypes stupid Ai. Partially because I know there is no actual Ai involved and partially because all this Ai fluff being excessively mentioned is annoying.
in reply to daniel:// stenberg://

there is a little bit of actual good stuff being announced too, but it's all being pushed to the margins.

(Best moment, in the Community Maintainers track: "...and now there is AI in pull requests." (dead silence) (from the back: "yeah we noticed.") *presenter grimaces*)
