I get JS arrow function syntax. One thing I'm still slightly unclear on is the change to the this keyword, though. Arrow functions have access to the parent scope, but how far does that extend? If I define a success handler as an arrow function inside a function, then pass that handler to a different function that runs an AJAX request, which context will my success handler wind up with? I don't expect an answer, as this is confusingly written, but it's this kind of thing I'm still unsure of.

I haven't interviewed any job candidates in the last few years since my role has changed, but a fun question (which had nothing to do with the actual interview) I would ask is "Do you know where the term Little Endian vs Big Endian originates from?" And of the dozens of people I've interviewed, zero of them know.

Spoiler alert: It's Gulliver's Travels. Which end of the egg do you break first?

in reply to André Polykanine

@menelion No. I had an earlier vversion from a few months back that I couldn't figure out how to use. I saw a recommendation for it today on LinkedIn and decided to give it another chance. Downloaded and installed 0.5 and it was like night and day but so far I've only tried it with speech. One thing that I like about it is that it uses single letter hotkeys to move to elements in the file, such as headings and links, and it's very much like JAWS and NVDA in that respect. I did find one Epub file that it couldn't open which I was able to open and read with Biblos.

What tool do you reach for when you want something with the core functionality of Syncthing, but you don' t want the whole Syncthing?

bidirectional syncing, latest copy of the file wins, I get to keep a local copy on my computer, doesn't need a full bloated app with a web interface?

Apologies #Universeodon folks especially, I'm having a pretty poor time getting everything up and running again and it's been a headache the entire time. I have swapped out the faulty component and done some re-wiring of the infrastructure to hopefully make things more resilient but everything on our server infrastructure is now not responding. I'm working as hard as I can to get things back up and running before I leave the DC.

There are two ways that servers on here can accept new members:

-Sign-ups where you join instantly

-Sign-ups where the server moderator has to manually approve your membership

Approval sign-ups make moderation much more effective, but some people seem to find them more difficult.

If you are someone who finds approval sign-ups more difficult, could you explain the main thing putting you off?

(By the way, this isn't meant to be judgmental, just want to find out what the main barriers are! 🙂 )

I’m actually in favour of increasing our military spending, mostly because I anticipate the US deciding at some to point to switch to military means to annex us if their economic measure aren’t successful.

What worries me is how much of this new spending is going to be directed right to the hostile country that’s threatening us.

We should be lessening our dependence on the US militarily just much as we should be should be lessening our dependence on them economically.

Rogers offered me a Pixel 10 pro XL for free, if I return it after 2 years. if I don't, it's $360 CAD (about $256 USD), which I can just pay $15 at a time over those 24 months. So, now I have one. Will it replace my OnePlus despite having half the CPU power? Not sure yet. But it's a nice phone. Looks weirdly similar to my iPhone 15 pro max, but with a camera bar. Charges with Magsafe / Qi 2, which means all my charging stations and my MagSafe battery pack support it.
At the very least, it's a free testing phone that will be kept up-to-date for a very long time.
