Maintaining an open-source project is like getting a kitten: at first, you give it all your attention, all the time… then you learn to balance things so you both stay sane. Sometimes you get tired of the cat, and it gets to move to a farm upstate 🤔😎
This is good to see - AI still produces a lot of crap and loves to randomly change code - but when *focused* on finding issues with a human who understands the code I've found the hit rate is close to 100% correct so far.
@tanepiper@shadowwwind@bagder I suppose using AI to find vulnerabilities is not unlike using a fuzzer to find vulnerabilities. Sure, it can find many positives, but it's up to the human to determine if it's a true or false one.
My concern here that LLMs do give worse-than results than something like Sonar - in many cases *static* code analysis was good enough to catch things that LLMs miss.
Ideally we would still use different tools, but GitHub seems to want to push everything into models.
Turned on the new #GitHub "Code Quality" feature that seems to be some extended CodeQL + AI.
It's actually worse than anything #SonarQube gave us. That actually gave really good reports on code smells, regressions and coverage failure. It was reliable.
It really does appear tech companies are replacing everything with expensive, resource intensive systems that give worse results and expect us to pay more @pluralistic #enshitificaton
based on what? The AI-powered code analyzers we engage with now seem to outperform the ones without AI... This is anecdotal observations in our project only.
Considering how many garbage AI pull requests you must get, I imagine it's still unclear if the technology is a net positive.
I think it's also important to note that the PRs were reviewed by someone skilled so, while the LLM may have helped, the vulnerabilities were still vetted by a human who understood what was wrong.

Does anyone know wether Chat GPT and co leave metha data in created word documents? For example with Chat GPT, you can directly download a .docx file. Can I somehow identify that the file has been created with AI, excluding just throwing the text inside it into an like AI detector?

So from this month on I'll also have to pay for Gemini Advanced, or rather, Google One, which at least also includes 2 TB Drive storage. Though Google Drive is meh. The thing is, I still don't really know wether I actually should. I also use Chat GPT Plus, more often than Gemini. But I prefer both for different usecases. But paying 40€ per month for AI, which I don't actually, you know, love that much. Eh meh. Not sure.
@techsinger GPT for random daily questions, explain this describe this what does this mean blah blah, and messing with the voice mode of course. I know blame me but I feel sometimes talking to that thing can actually bring up some interesting thougvhts/viewpoints, not that I'd rely on it or do it often though. Oh and also it can edit documements like word or powerpoint, I like that it can actually give me back a proper word document to download while gemini can only you know, write the text but I have to copy/paste/format myself. While Gemini is rather for research, and well, on my Android I often use it for even quicker stuff like just pasting things I just found or asking it something about a PDF I've just got or stuff. The voice mode is also not that bad, I feel like it can better help regarding accessibility stuff like guiding you through a screen etc. But that might just be me/my settings/promts etc.
@techsinger Honestly LLMs in that sense, like chatbots, are the most useful imo. Allow them to process images to be helpful regarding describing and fine. Voice cloning is fucking interesting but also fucking scary and I don't personally need it. Same for all that music generation shit and image and video generation shit. Was funny for 1 2 years, no it can just vanish imo. I don't see anyone having any serious advantages from it. But at this point when you pay for either, so Chat GPT or Gemini, you also get their stupid image generation tool, and Nano Banana image/video /fake shit. Like na. Just give me Chat GPT 2023 with better understanding etc and I'm good.
I don't think they can give you that, unfortunately. I think they're hitting limits. I may be wrong, of course, but as it stands... They wouldn't be including any of this stuff if anyone would buy it on his own.
@johann Yup, I got Gemini 1 year free with my Pixel 9 Pro, that year jis now over. Claude is also quite good, but I'm not really sure, feels ´like each month the one company is topping the other with putting out a new model.
@felixule Yeah, I think I'm going to cancel Chat GPT as well. Been using Claude for the entire day yesterday and I'm not really enjoying Chat GPTs output as much as Claudes, and I'm on the Claude free plan for now. Chat GPT voice mode is fun but that's not worth the price, and Gemini has the same voice mode capabilities for free at this point.

Wow! That was an hour of sheer panic and adrenaline! While in the process of attempting to locate, unplug at both ends, disentangle, and finally extract a power cord from my insane spaghetti of cables, I knocked out power to the same portion of my equipment that I did last time, doing the same thing, LOL. Clearly, this is a rather weak point in my physical infrastructure. But I knew that already. But have I done anything about it yet? Clearly not. LOL. Whose to blame about that? Okay, I should do something about it. Maybe. Sometimes, or perhaps more than sometimes, we so often don't learn, and we willingly and continually do things or don't do things even though we know they are wrong. Then bvad things happen, and then we ignore it some more, and it nags at us, and we ignore it some more. Wellp, this time, things did not power up as expected. The major component that got knocked out was the entire network plant. Upon reboot, the SFP+ fiber modules did not return to service as usual. The active module was layer 3 unreachable, even though the port showed as up. The secondary (backup) module was online, but of course, it did not have any fiber connected to it. I switched the fiber over, but the connection did not come back up. Then, some how, both modules became unresponsive, and this time, both ports went down too. Oh boy, this was not good. I rebooted the switch, and only the backup fiber module came layer3 online, but the Internet did not. Fortunately, the 5G connection that I canceled, and then they gave me two free months of was still up and running, and automatically powering the network, as per routing policy. So I pulled the latest firmware for the fiber module, and ran the upgrade process. This went off without a hitch. However, though the upgrader said it was rebooting, layer3 never became responsible, and The fiber link did not come back up. I rebooted the switch once again, and this time, both SFP+ ports became active, and both fiber modules were pingable on the management VLAN once again! Wahoo! Then, what's more, the Internet came up on the backup module. I did a quick swap of the fiber, and the connection is now back up on the primary fiber module, with the backup once again functional and on hot standby, for situations, I guess, just like this. Wow! Seems that the switch had a hayday with its SFP+ section. 10G-base-T worked perfectly the whole time. Very odd indeed. I really thought there for about an hour that I had initially fried one, and then both fiber modules, a $300 value. Wellp, turns out I got lucky, and nothing is fried. Just wow!

ssd.eff.org/module/how-to-get-… is pretty good. It's more "make your iOS device a bit more private" rather than generic "internet privacy", but there's good advice in there.
I made a video ranting about the algorithmic internet and ads, then started yelling about using Firefox and how forks are killing FOSS projects. I think I'm losing my mind and this won't be popular at all 🫠
If using forks killed Firefox as "relevant" architecture – using Edge/Opera would kill Chrome's "relevance". I can't see how that is the case. Using a gecko based fork won't show up as blink, but maybe I got you wrong.
I think, leaving Firefox sends a strong and clear message. Especially when forks get more attention. Same as growing numbers would. (btw Thunderbird has no notable forks – maybe there is something to learn from you 😉)
Staying with Firefox enables it to ignore criticism, keep default Google search (and bragging about privacy), add AI features, … in the end I value the freedom to vote with my feet, even in Firefox's case.
I'm on your side on most topics you cover – but come on, be a bit nicer to forks. 😍
