My wife runs a small non-profit (<5 people) and wants my help to get them off Google Workspace for Nonprofits. They mainly use email, collaborative docs, calender and drive. I have limited spoons so the simpler the migration, the better. Any suggestions?

Options I've come across so far are #Proton, #Infomaniak, #Zoho and #NextCloud. Are any of these better/easier than the others? Happy to pay, but budget is not unlimited. I've a little experience with Zoho, but am not sure how good its privacy credentials are?

We are based in Australia but the host doesn't need to be here (EU or Switzerland, I guess).

Just last week, two people asked me if I could help them set up a #Nextcloud service and move their data off of the big US tech clouds. It may still be small, but the trend is real.✌️

With the shenanigans that Apple is pulling, I’ve been thinking it’s time to reconsider moving my stuff to #Nextcloud. I had an account for several months before but it was hosted in the US via Cloudamo, and with the political situation, I’d rather put my data elsewhere. Canada preferably. Any good and affordable hosting suggestions?

#XMPP enthusiasts out there: what would you say the ultimate Achilles heel of the XMPP ecosystem is, at present? Fragmentation of clients? What?

My sense is that it's this: when one goes to store an XMPP address in one's addressbook, there doesn't seem to be standard way to store an XMPP address. #Android doesn't have that as an allowable field, and #Thunderbird and #Nextcloud have an "Instant Messaging" field, where the type can be set to "XMPP". But are these two compatible with each other when trying to sync between them? Edit: Yes, but there's a catch: *the XMPP address must be prefixed with "xmpp:"*

So "user@foo.bar" is not an OK XMPP address, but "xmpp:user@foo.bar" is.

Then to make matters worse, now there's a wish to change the labeling of "XMPP Address" to "Chat ID": gultsch.social/@daniel/1140129…

It might be a long time before the address synchy-ness ever works again between Android <-> #Davx5 <-> Nextcloud <->Thunderbird

Note: Android allows a "Jabber" type for an IM address, where you *don't* prefix the address with "xmpp:".

(#DeltaChat gets to gloat hard here, as they have plain-old email addresses)

#prosody #conversations #gajim #dino #snikket #monocles #monal

Absolutely nobody knows what an XMPP address is, so just go ahead and call it a:

#XMPP #Conversations_im #Jabber

#NextCloud #accessibility is highly impacted by this thing that seems very small. What they did is they removed (!) the Copy Public Link from the context menu in their File Explorer integration. I don't know who to call, but I'm pretty sure we need to create more noise in there. I'm thinking about starting a petition. Please join me! github.com/nextcloud/desktop/i… // CC @nextcloud

🏠 My post and conversations slow loading...

Hello @Friendica Support
What can cause #friendica homepage (My post and conversations) to slow down? I set 10 posts per page, some of my posts have 1 or 2 videos embedded, my storage setup is Current Storage Backend: Filesystem

when i click on my home page 🏛️ I notice that my browser takes about 10 seconds to load the post content , sometimes it doesn't even load the Friendica icon , I have to click the refresh button 1 or 2 times,

Before I used to embed videos via #nextcloud, and it worked fine. But then I edited the posts by removing the embedded video from nextcloud and uploading it to friendica and embedding it as an attachment, everything else works very fast . Some suggestions... please

cheers

#TIL There is a solution called @yunohost. It's kind of an environment that allows you to install lots of apps. And my main insight was: there are LOTS of open-source web apps for everything. If I have enough time, I will definitely test many of them and document their #accessibility. I do remember struggling with some of them definitely, but some (like #NextCloud and #Miniflux) are decent. Here is their catalog: apps.yunohost.org/catalog

To get some experience as a video content creator, I started @nextcloud_academy. It's inspired by explaining basic things to my in-laws over the phone. The channel will have short videos with step-by-step tutorials that you can show to people who are new to #Nextcloud.

I'm starting by showing how to set up an automatic backup of your photos and videos on #Android. (Bear with me, it's the first video I've ever put together 🙈 ).

vhsky.cz/w/vir1iWwNPcEF9Z4VuMM…

My mother-in-law set up the #Nextcloud app to back up photos from her #Android phone. However, no photos were uploaded. I thought she did something wrong, but in fact it was set up correctly, including all permissions. But nothing was even queued for upload. I couldn't make it work either.

I got a recommendation for #FolderSync, but it's freemium and it felt fishy with all the data consent dialogs. Then I went to #FDroid and discovered #RoundSync and wow, it's a great piece of software, clean, lean and does reliably what I want it to do. The sad fact is that @newhinton, app developer, gets 3€/month for it on Liberapay. We really need to get more money into open source apps.

Was sind eure Anwendungszwecke?

Muss jetzt mal #NextCloud lobpreisen 🙌 .

Looks good! Does it support Caldav sync from an external online calendar like #nextcloud ?

Wer will, kann dann in diesen Ordnern Dinge tun.

chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtath…

echo "Hello World"

wiki.hostsharing.net/index.php…

xyz00-cloud@h00:~$ cd ~/nextcloud/updater
xyz00-cloud@h00:~/nextcloud/updater$ chmod u+x updater.phar
xyz00-cloud@h00:~/nextcloud/updater$ ./updater.phar

xyz00-cloud@h00:~$ cd ~/nextcloud
xyz00-cloud@h00:~/nextcloud$ php occ db:add-missing-primary-keys --no-interaction
xyz00-cloud@h00:~/nextcloud$ php occ db:add-missing-columns --no-interaction
xyz00-cloud@h00:~/nextcloud$ php occ db:add-missing-indices --no-interaction
xyz00-cloud@h00:~/nextcloud$ php occ db:convert-filecache-bigint --no-interaction

xyz00-cloud@h00:~$ cd ~/nextcloud
xyz00-cloud@h00:~/nextcloud$ php occ app:update --all -n --no-ansi

Jakej minimální #nextcloud to vyžaduje? 😂

Big kudos to the Schleswig-Holstein!

Another German administration is breaking Microsoft’s glass cage, and at a first read the scope of this initiative seems more ambitious than many I’ve witnessed in the past.

Both the ArsTechnica article and the original announcement don’t include a few details to make better estimate on the possible success of this initiative though.

The announcement follows previously established plans to migrate the state government off Microsoft Office in favor of open source LibreOffice.

I hope that there’s a Web-based offering somewhere on the horizon. Fewer and fewer employees nowadays run Word/Excel directly on their machines. Most of them run Google Docs or use Microsoft’s office cloud. Giving them a stand-alone app which limits the possibilities for online collaboration may be met with resistance, especially now that many of them are already getting used to online AI assistants. I read that #NextCloud is involved - I hope there’s a plan to run #CollaboraOffice, which is more or less like running the LibreOffice engine as a service, #OnlyOffice or some equivalent alternative.

Due to the high hardware requirements of Windows 11, we would have a problem with older computers. With Linux we don’t have that

Very sensitive decision that will probably save taxpayers a lot of money. But it’d also be interested to know which #Linux distro has been selected. Hopefully the administration won’t repeat Munich’s past mistakes and it won’t try to build and maintain their own distro. Better get into talks with a popular distro (probably not Red Hat, but hey isn’t SuSE German?) and orchestrate a deal where the State funds its development, and in exchange it gets development support. It’s a win-win where a distro not managed by a giant like Red Hat or Canonical can get consistent direct funding from a public administration (that’s what many of us have been advocating for years anyway), and the local administration can enjoy the support of a well-documented distro like OpenSuSE, Mint, Pop_OS or Manjaro without having to reinvent the wheel and scramble for their own developers/packagers/maintainers, and minimizing the risk of going from one vendor lock-in (Microsoft) to another (IBM or Canonical).

The government will ditch Microsoft Sharepoint and Exchange/Outlook in favor of open source offerings Nextcloud and Open-Xchange, and Mozilla Thunderbird

Same issue as with LibreOffice: folks today are used to webmail and mobile apps. Thunderbird definitely fills the gap on the stand-alone side, especially now that it’s getting more love and support than before. But it still lacks an official mobile app - K-9 is almost there, but not nearly there yet. And it doesn’t solve the “I’m used to the GMail/Outlook interface and set all of my filters and do my advanced search from a webview” problem. There’s actually a big gap there. What’s a decent open webmail UI that can compete with GMail/Outlook nowadays? RoundCube feels ancient and it has barely changed in 15 years. SnappyMail is a bit better, and it’s what a use as a selected webmail client too, but it’s still lightyears behind GMail/Outlook. NextCloud Mail is slowly getting there, but it only integrates with a NextCloud solution. Let’s admit that there’s a gap that needs to be filled fast if we don’t want employees who have years of email muscle memory trained in specific environments to doom the project.

Schleswig-Holstein is also developing an open source directory service to replace Microsoft’s Active Directory and an open source telephony offering.

Please, don’t. Just don’t. A local administration, no matter how well-intentioned and initially well-funded, just won’t have the resources necessary to invent such big wheels. And, even if it somehow manages to bake something together, it’ll eventually be a patchy solution that they’ll have to maintain themselves for years to come, and that is unlikely to find adoption outside of its initial borders.

Invest into #OpenLDAP to fill the gaps left by ActiveDirectory on the LDAP side instead. That project needs a lot more love. And leverage WebDAV for almost everything else. If you are already planning to use NextCloud, it’ll already do a lot of the heavylifting for you on that side, without having to write new software or come up with new protocols.

Same for telephony. Looking into iPXE and other open implementations of the PXE and SIP protocols. Telephony protocols are hard and well-established, reinventing the wheel should be avoided at all costs.

I think there’s a lot of potential in initiatives like these, but only a clear definition of their scope and a clear plan of execution with continuous user feedback can help preventing something like the failure of the early Munich experiments.

Schleswig-Holstein geht voran:

#LibreOffice statt M$ Office
#Linux statt Windows
#Thunderbird statt Outlook
#Nextcloud statt Sharepoint

At the end the workaround didn't work well, because #Nextcloud was sending invitations from synchronized events and that is not wanted.

I ended up writing my own little #iCal #middleware that fetches the original #ics export and republishes it with all event UIDs postfixed by a constant string.
This ensures that fiancée's calendar event UIDs don't collide with received invitations to the same events and I can add them to my own calendar.
