Thank you for confirming! That's awesome news, and will probably be why I stay with FastSM all on its own. I quoted pretty frequently on Twitter, and now that Mastodon finally supports it, and I finally have a Windows client that does as well, I'll be doing more of it here. It's also great to be able to properly read quoted posts from others.
If "apt install" tells you "after this installation, XX GB additional disk space will be used" – that means that YOU SHOULD LOOK if that's available. Because, APT DOES NOT – it simply … well, stops working when the disk is full 🤦♂️

@SamantazFox So did I, which is why I didn't check. But then, who'd have thought installing a graphics driver would require more than half of the system partition (here: I tried to install ROCm/AMDGPU on a test machine, which required "25 GB (!!) additional disk space)…
Checking disk space must be complicated. Package dependencies are easier… 🙊 💨
@SamantazFox it might not be much easier than package dependencies. Since the files might go into different partitions, it's not trivial to know if you have enough space. For most installations checking the `/` partition would be enough, but then apt should have some heuristics to avoid guessing when the partition setup is more complicated than usual.
@SamantazFox i wonder if it even can do that. Since some package might install to /opt or installs stuff at .local when and if you have a separate home partition if would have to check all of that.
@nachtpfoetchen exactly the point here. But then I'd expect the tool (apt) to consider the worst case: all of those going to the smallest place. If that's not clear at that point, ASK: "your root partition just has BB GB free. You're sure that fits?" That way, one would at least have an indicator.
I mean, the usual places stuff goes to is either below /usr, /var, /boot, or (some cases) /opt (ignoring the few bytes for /etc here). Check where those are, check matched partitions. @SamantazFox
@SamantazFox hmm i had it often that i wanted to install a new kernel version and it didn’t fit and i had to remove omd kernels with apt autoremove first. Then it would complain pretty often. I think the only thing that could solve this would be metadata in every package telling how much space it needs and where.

From the start of the recent protests in Iran, following the experience of the 12-day war between Iran and Israel and the experiences of the Aban 1398 (2019) and 1401 (2022-2023) protests, we knew widespread internet disruptions were coming. Earlier, active members of the free software community had set up internal Delta Chat relay servers on tiiiz.ir. Relying on that prior experience, we conducted practical user tests with general users to observe their interaction with the application. The result was clear: Delta Chat was far simpler for everyday users to understand and had a more intuitive interface compared to platforms like Matrix.
That’s why, together with community members, we began producing educational content for Delta Chat. The goal was to prepare users as much as possible before Iran’s internet was completely severed and localized.
When the blackout hit, and after a day had passed, almost no access to the global internet remained—only very limited internal networks were active. Under those conditions, our public promotion and training efforts for using Delta Chat began.
First, we had to create an environment where users could install and set up the application. We set up a local GitLab instance and uploaded the necessary files there. To share download links and installation guides, we used the (Jitsi Meet) platform—because in that situation, almost no other means of communication (even SMS) was stable or available.
As many users joined the `tiiiz` server, it gradually began to slow down. We needed to move toward a decentralized architecture. So, with the collective cooperation of members, we encouraged the public to set up their own new servers. A simple, public server installation guide was posted on the main server, and gradually, one by one, new servers were added to the network.
As more servers came online, the user base also grew. Volunteer teams across various cities in Iran introduced and installed Delta Chat for others, inviting server owners to launch their own decentralized networks.
With the addition of servers and contributors, initial issues were resolved, and new ideas were proposed and implemented by developers. For example, each server’s installation page included a section for sharing user IDs. Gradually, more extensive documentation, security solutions, detailed introductions to Delta Chat, and other practical features were organically added to the network by various individuals.
