@NVAccess @jcsteh Oh no! Please don't revert Commit 14701: NVDA now responds slightly faster to commands and focus changes. The latest commit removes this game-changing improvement. It improves all aspects of interacting with NVDA, so I can't imagine moving to the older/slower interaction approach with the upcoming alpha release. Any chance of at least maintaining it in the Advanced settings window? github.com/nvaccess/nvda/commi…

@ppatel 1. Is it at all possible that it is actually checking for updates, but because the dialog comes up in the foreground, you're unintentionally dismissing it while typing without even realising it came up?
2. Are you behind any kind of proxy and/or could your system have weird proxy settings somewhere?
3. If you manually check for updates, does that work?

I just submitted a second attempt at this. I'm waiting for a signed try build to complete so I can determine whether this fixes the touch exploration issues. github.com/nvaccess/nvda/pull/…

Twice in the last month, someone has lamented near me that they have a bunch of learned-through-experience knowledge in their head, and they don't know how to draw it out into lessons to #teach their colleagues.

This is called "tacit knowledge". And fortunately, we actually know some ways to elicit it from experts & use it to train new learners!

I've appreciated Cedric Chin's blog series on this:

Ok, ok. My final, final ESC post. Promised. Thinking back, I am still most impressed by the 2021 Ukraine entry. Shut by Go_a. That really was a very special moment. youtube.com/watch?v=lqvzDkgok_…

Having some "Old lady yells at cloud" moments this morning.

1. Searching my gmail for Hashimotos turned up results that only contained the word "thyroid." To make the search work as expected I had to put that single word in quotes. This offends my librarian brain.
2. Amazon is one of the biggest companies in the world and can't even be bothered to make sure an email uses the right amount of decimal places.

This is not an AI problem, but it is probably a "people who are using the AI" problem.

If anyone using Firefox 113.0.1 on Windows with NVDA 2023.1 wants to try this, I'd be curious. This page reliably makes Firefox memory usage explode until crash, takes a couple of minutes or so: escinsight.com/2023/05/09/let-…

Thank-you @erion for this very kind feedback, it has made my day 😀

Early on in my #mastodon experience adding #alttext to my images was definitely intimidating. But several excellent threads from folks like @JesseF8693 helped to clarify how valuable this small amount of front-end work can be, and now it's just a habit, and one of the things I enjoy the most about posting here.

(I do wish you could edit alttext after posting tho - @SDF 💚 -since I often make blunders.)

Almost everyone, especially employees and students, now use multiple devices such as phones, tablets and PCs. While doing things related to our personal or professional lives, we may need to share files across devices.
