Slovenská lyžiarka Petra Vlhová suverénnym spôsobom vyhrala úvodný slalom novej sezóny Svetového pohára. Vo fínskom Levi predviedla v oboch kolách najrýchlejšiu jazdu a triumfovala s náskokom 1,41 sekundy pred Nemkou Lenou Dürrovou.ŠPORT.sk (Šport.sk)
I wonder why people get so fixated on "meme" solutions to company problems, e.g, with tumblr, people inevitably bring up how banning (some) porn doomed tumblr even though this doesn't appear to match what happened.
And the idea that you could just add porn back to tumblr to restore its former glory. It was acquired for $1B in 2013 and then reportedly for $3M in 2019.
Why would someone think that filling tumblr with porn will turn this $0 property that's losing $30M/yr into a $1B property?
With Twitter, I lost count of the number times I saw someone suggest that Twitter could become wildly profitable if they would only add an edit button and get rid of ranked timeline.
Those are both things I want, but an edit button is worth approximately $0 to Twitter and just allowing unranked feed at all is money losing for Twitter. As noted in mastodon.social/@danluu/109383…, A/B tests show that, even among users who've chosen the linear feed, switching them to ranked feed is more profitable.
Another example is complaining about how no one makes small phones and how you could print money if you made a small phone. Of the people I know who express phone preferences, about 1/3 say that companies should stop making big phones.
Apple made a small phone with the iPhone mini line of phones, which they discontinued because basically no one buys small phones. I've bought small phones, but zero of the people I knew who complained about how big phones are bought an iPhone mini.
One that feels very similar to me car nerd forums are full of people explaining how BMW (or whatever) could make *so much* money if they'd only release a manual transmission wagon in North America.
My last car was a manual and my current car is a wagon, but these things very clearly don't sell. There have been manual wagons for sale in the U.S. and they just don't sell. Like with small phones, this is something people say they want but then don't actually buy.

Happy to share my new article, "Letters from the Ottoman Empire: Migration from the Caucasus and Russia's Pan-Islamic Panic," published by Slavic Review. doi.org/10.1017/slr.2023.164
For years, I have been searching for Muslim refugees' letters exchanged between the #Ottoman and Russian empires in the 1850s–1914. I was lucky to find quite a few: in archives in Tbilisi, Baku, Moscow, Vladikavkaz, and Makhachkala and private collections in #Jordan and Dagestan. The article explores the secret transborder #letter exchange of Caucasus Muslims and reactions by #Russia.
I argue that Muslims' letters from the Ottoman Empire fueled the Russian government's paranoia about Pan-Islamism that purportedly threatened Russia's colonial project in the #Caucasus. The Pan-Islamic panic shaped Russia's migration policies and colonial governance, including bans on Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca, emigration, and return migration.

The EU is moving forward with #eIDAS despite warnings from over 500 scientists & privacy advocates.
With no requirement that server-side code be released open source, we cannot be sure that our personal data is secure.😱
Thankfully, the #Pirates 🏴☠️ in the EU Parliament did manage to push for an #opensource release of the client-app & the eID will be voluntary.
This isn't over. EU citizens please contact your representatives and demand they respect our #privacy !🥊

@sovtechfund (funded by the German government) just announced a €1M grant towards the @gnome project, an open source desktop environment.
Imagine a world in which governments don't spend billions of dollars in licensing fees every year to make Microsoft richer, and that money instead goes towards _public code_ that belongs to all of us.
That may seem utterly implausible - but every example like this brings us one step closer to it being inevitable.

Today I'll probably be posting a bit more from the #OpenAlt conference. If you're not interested in it, use that great feature of Mastodon and mute me for the weekend.
I'll be giving two talks at OpenAlt:
Fedora Asahi Remix: Linux on Apple Silicon
Fediverse: Mastodon and Others
I'll be happy to meet you at the #Fedora booth or at my talks. If you cannot come, you can watch the talks online (they're in Czech though): openalt.cz/2023/program/

New Outlook app for Windows, macOS and, apparently, also iOS/Android, is collecting user IMAP/Gmail/... credentials for storing user emails in the cloud. Along with contacts and calendar.
I could not confirm that the Outlook for Android is doing this (can anyone else?) but the Windows bit was tested by me, and is true. And the consent screen presented is quite inadequate, to my taste.
This really could be violating privacy laws or regulations, and could be considered an ISMS incident in various companies.

I have a mixed feeling about this.
I mean, of course the burn-big-tech side of me is happy whenever a company like Amazon is force to redistribute some of its immoral wealth.
But software patents are always evil, even when litigations turn against Big Tech.
I've already written in the past of how the industry of voice assistants has been ruined by patent trolls. Open-source solutions like Mycroft have gone out of business because of lawsuits initiated by some of those trolls. Folks who have submitted patents that simply include the drawing of a cylinder with a speaker and have taken anybody they liked to court are the reason why the only actors left in this industry are those that can afford expensive and lengthy patent litigations (Google and Amazon).
Sure, in theory VoiceBox has a stronger argument than the ridicolous ones proposed by the trolls that took down Mycroft. At least VoiceBox showed some working prototypes. And of course it's a bit unsettling that they demoed a voice assistant called "Alexus" just 6 months before Alexa was released - even though in this case the name similarity may just be a coincidence, as apparently VoiceBox had designed the device for Lexus cars.
But I also wrote a primitive (and actually working) voice assistant back in 2007-2008: github.com/BlackLight/Voxifera. Of course it's extremely primitive when compared to today's tech (it only used Markov chains over frequency samples, no neural networks involved), and it's closer to what today we'd call a hotword model (which actually only worked with max 9-10 phrases before frequency boundaries got fuzzier to detect) rather than a speech model. But hey, it's much more than what some of the patent litigants over voice assistants could show.
I've never claimed any rights over my idea because I believe that, in technology, rights can be claimed only over working and replicable implementations, not over ideas. I wrote my voice assistant back in the day because I was inspired by HAL-9000 - like many in the AI field at the time. If we were to share the royalties of all the products that benefit from conversational interfaces with those who originally had the idea of a cylinder that speaks with a synthesized voice, then most of the revenue that Google and Amazon collect through their voice assistants should probably go to the heirs of Clarke and Kubrick. I stand to this principle even if it means saying that Amazon shouldn't pay in this case.
