Ancient Near Eastern cultures counted to 12 on one hand by moving the thumb along the pattern of red numbers I’ve added to this image. To count higher, they’d add 12/finger on the other hand, which got them to 60 using both hands. Mesopotamian mathematicians codified this into a base-60 number system, which is why we have 60 minutes/60 seconds/360º (6 x 60), &c. (The one-handed 12 is also why the first Egyptian sundials had twelve divisions, so we have 12 hours/day.)

TIL that in 1990, the BBC censored a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode because Data talks about the “reunification of Ireland in 2024”, discussing how terrorism is successful form of political influence.

We are 7 days away from 2024 & that episode has never aired in full in Ireland.

New app added to the Accessible Apps directory by Editorial Staff: RScan. Accessible. RScan allows blind and visually impaired people to recognize products simply by scanning their barcodes. A smart algorithm looks up scanned barcodes on DuckDuckGo, and automatically reads aloud what it considers to be the most fitting and useful description of the scanned product. accessibleandroid.com/app/rsca… #Android #App

Hey folks, have you taken my #StarTrek survey yet? I'm planning to close it to responses in January, so there's only a few weeks left to take it and share it.

You don't need to be a huge fan to take the survey! And you can skip any question you don't like. Trying to spread this to as many diverse corners of the internet as possible. So please share it today! Many thanks. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAI…

Loud sounds, strong language, fighting, another audio skit just because why not?

If any peoples remember last year when I got bored on Christmas eve and made a skit of me and @TheQuinbox on Christmas giving each other "gifts"... I did this again this year. I wonder what kind of craziness happened this time? Maybe it'd be a good idea for me and her to just never spend another Christmas together again, because it'll end like this every single time. So. Much. Drama!

Note that, again, all of this is purely a joke, and was made for fun between us.

I also plan to play around with more skit ideas than just these between her and I, so there should be more fun stuff coming soon! 🙂

In a few days time, it will be 27 years since I first installed Linux. I should celebrate it this time around. Maybe I'll write a followup to my how it all started post?

Though, maybe not. There's a lot of fun stories, and a lot of great people I met during those years, but also a metric ton of sadness. I can't write a followup that focuses only on the good parts, and I don't want to end up writing something that ends up being more sad than happy.

Well, still have a few days to figure something out to celebrate with.

27 years of Linux

I ended up writing down a story that happened back in 2008. It's both funny (if you squint hard enough), and sad (if you don't).

It's one of those "the things I've seen, kids..." kind of stories. Perhaps there are even lessons to be learned in it, too.

Merry Christmas and a happy new cover? Did somebody say cover?

I hope you enjoy. Please feel free to let me know what you think, and a massive thank you to @talon for the mixing and stuff.

a silly Christmas Elevenlabs production
I'm in a group of friends who sometimes like to make silly productions welcoming each other to the start of whatever week it is. Today happens to both be Christmas Day and the start of week 52 2023. Thus, this morning, I did a silly thing with Elevenlabs speech-to-speech.
Those who listened to my internet radio show on the now defunct TBRN around 2006 will get this. Others will be left scratching their heads.
