One of the topics that came up on my timeline today was backups. Do you have them? Do you know they work?
In 2016, during a particularly rough patch in my life, I made a thing I called "a Bad Day in the Server Room."
In this file, I found a bunch of hard drives in my parents' basement, some dating back to the very early 90s, most of them not calibrating anymore, turned them all on for 30 seconds, and recorded the resulting racket.

"Many recent Intel laptops have […] a raw MIPI camera-sensor connected to the IPU6 found in recent Intel laptop chips.

[…] #Linux support for the IPU6 relies on an out of tree #kernel driver with a proprietary userspace stack […]

[…] Linaro has started a project to […] allow these cameras to work without needing proprietary software and Red Hat has joined Linaro in working on this. […]

This work is at a point now where it is ready for wider testing. […]"

It's amazing how little many of the people who set tech policy understand about tech.

E.g., here's Senator Orin Hatch bragging about chairing the Senate High-Tech Task Force and then, puzzled, asking Zuckerberg how the company could possibly sustain a business if they don't charge users.

Zuck, caught off guard, takes a long pause and responds, "Senator, we run ads" (Zuck and the two FB staffers behind him, a VP and a lobbyist, hold in their laughter, with varying degrees of success).

I have ✨ a new preprint ✨ to share!!

This is a scientific review paper which seeks to provide a map, an entry point, and a call to action for improving the lives of the people who create software:

"Psychological Affordances Can Provide a Missing Explanatory Layer for Why Interventions to Improve Developer Experience Take Hold or Fail"

I recently switched to using a unified kernel image on my laptop - a UEFI executable that includes the kernel and the initial RAM disk. It is loaded directly by the UEFI firmware, hence no boot loader is needed anymore.
I'm still resolving a few issues, but it's essentially working. For now, at least, I've decided to use dracut to generate the initramfs image, and the Arch Linux dracut-ukify package to automate creation of the unified kernel image.

"Give all your fucks to the living."

Mandy Brown on—well, the renewal of the soul, in a different register, I think—through devotion to the genuinely alive.

"if you give your fucks to the unliving—if you plant those fucks in institutions or systems or platforms or, gods forbid, interest rates—you will run out of fucks. One day you will reach into that bag and your hand will meet nothing but air and you will be bereft."
