If you go to a museum or gallery, do you prefer braille or do you instead use a text to speech app?
(Or both, or something else)
I've got a bit of money to refurbish a small UK museum space with better provisions for Deaf and Blind folk, so I'm keen to know what will be the most useful.
Please Note: This is a question specifically for blind and partially sighted Fedi users, rather than fully sighted folk.
For quickness I prefer to hear what's going on. Braille is nice to have for sure, but if there's a lot of info, would spend more time reading than enjoying. Definitely a personal opinion, and just like anything it's very subjective. I have done sound design and audio queues for museums in the passed so understand that more, as it were.
My phone. I already have it with me. Maybe scan a QR, it opens up to an accessible web page with info on, whether that be audio files the user presses play on, or written text which then is spoken via the screen-reader. If you go the latter route, then anyone who does use Braille and happens to have a display with them, such as deafblind can use that. @jakobrosin thoughts on this? I know you've done similar things.
the benefit of the user already using a device they have with them is less outlay on your side, just the web hosting or whatever. Also means they could in theory take the tour without being on-site at all, though that's bad for business, as there aren't paying customers there. You could charge for the virtual tour as well, but that's a different discussion. @jakobrosin
@Onj @jakobrosin QR codes fixed in location have a big flaw, they are usually URLs, which require someone to pay to host the domain and site, ive seen several cases where an organisation forgets to renew the domain and someone else takes it over.
That's really good to know, and it would link with another project I'm already doing.
There's the risk people will tour without coming in, but I'm happy to risk that. The building the museum is in is the big draw for what I do anyway, so our patrons still most likely want the experience of being here anyway.
If you do end up going with Braille, keep in mind that English has two Braille grades. Most native speakers will use and prefer grade2, which introduces abbreviations for common English words, prefixes and suffixes, think "have", "would" or "ing". However, many foreign visitors, *even those who both know Braille and can speak English, may not actually know grade 2 English Braille*, and need grade 1, which has no such abbreviations.
In English-speaking countries, it's often assumed that what you want is grade2, but if the place has a lot of foreign visitors specifically, that may not always be the right choice.
First, as many explorable pieces as possible. You definitely want labels, but yes, for longer descriptions, you might want either some pre-recorded stuff, or some texts on say, a website, and have a giant QR code somewhere comfortable to find.
Linking to an accessible companion guide on a site might be a better shout than braille. That would be easier to produce, easier to update, definitely cheaper to maintain and most importantly, it places the choice of how to consume that with each person who wants to read it. EG, I'm totally blind here, learned braille so young that I can't even remember not knowing it, but there are boatloads of blind/VI folk who lose sight later in life and never get that opportunity. IMO audio is a really nice to have extra if you can get it done within budget, but deafblind folk get the soggy end of the stick so often, I reckon I'd try to offset that a bit by commissioning a good writer over a sound designer if I were in your shoes.
BTW I live in London and my partner bloody loves a museum/exhibit. Would be happy to come and poke around ideas in progress. Holler whenever you've got something if that might help.

They could perhaps persuade some of the big providers to add access controls, but that would only result in more people using smaller or even self-hosted VPN services.
But it's almost impossible for a government to detect a VPN service that doesn't have age restrictions. Unless it's one of the big well-known ones.
A foreign entity could set them up, or someone aged less than 16 for themselves (and perhaps also their mates).
You need:
1. A cheap server, anywhere in the world, connected to the internet. 2. VPN server software, available for free from lots of places. 3. Some instructions, easily available.
Doesn't matter: if the law goes on the books then at any point where your phone/laptop/etc is seized for other reasons it may be discovered to have an illegal VPN and then you get prosecuted.
Unless I misunderstood the proposed law, it's the VPN operator that would be prosecuted in this case. They may lose their ability to take money from people in the UK.
If I'm over 18, it is not illegal for me to use the VPN, so someone would have to prove that I am using it but no one checked that I was over 18. If I am under 18, then the provider is at more legal risk but they could claim that they did age verification and this user managed to bypass it somehow.
The simplest way of doing age verification is to require a payment from a credit card in your name. The easiest way of bypassing this is to use a parent's credit card. If a company takes payment for VPN use via credit card, and makes a minimal effort to not accept debit cards or pre-paid cards for folks in the UK, they're probably okay.
Which doesn't mean that this is in any way a sensible law.
The government has to discover that there is an illegal VPN being used in the first place.
It is quite possible for millions of VPNs to be made available to UK children, hosted all over the world. Perhaps hosted by children, sharing the small monthly server costs. Quite secret, extremely difficult to find.
The proposed law could only ever hope to apply to a few big VPN companies. Which just moves the VPN usage by children underground, where other dangers lurk.
"We don't need to worry, because the govt will not be able to enforce it" is the counterpart to legislators who say "we don't need to put in detailed definitions & restrictions, because we trust police & prosecutors to use the powers responsibly". History has proven both are always true until they aren't.

@GoemonIshikawa would be very curious. Is this a data containing CF1 to CF6 values (and Parallel formants too) or just like, here's the frequency and sound for a specific IPA symbol? Either way, some kind of file, even if it's JSON or text works, it doesn't have to be the same format as my current data is but I can pull useful info out of it both manually and probably AI to see how it helps.
Actually it gives info for all 6 formants and the bandwidth for said formants, as I've updated the Yaml files with em. I've only updated one phoneme as a test, but it looks to work, but I can't look to test it out with any words like code for the O phoneme.
While we're here, you know what would be fun, for someone to make a collection of all these old synths and stuff em into one collection for people to just do stuff with no screen readers attached!
@GoemonIshikawa Lol, or an application that just lets you load / choose which wrapper, and engine, then you could have a Speak / convert to wav window the universally covered a bunch of these old synths. Haha. How fun of an idea but totally illegal too. Well, making the app itself is totally legal, because it's just reusing wrappers that talk to the engines which makes that a bit ironic. What's more in a gray area are the wrappers themselves, since they technically do link against comercial products, but I'm not worried with how extinct the companies behind those synths are these days.
Wondering. Ice and border patrol don't wear uniforms / show their faces apparently because of doxing. Why do police show their faces, have badges with their names on them, etc., and don't worry about doxing? Is it mostly that police actually being reasonable people? hmm. I wonder if releasing on GitHub might be easier for folks, rather than Eurpod. I am considering doing this and keeping one file there. This might break my old posts, but GitHub releases are more trackable, the repo is frozen at that tag, ETC. There's just clear benefits to release them always as a pair (editor + Add-on) whenever I make a change. From here on out, I think that's going to happen.
@x0 yeah, I think you can still link to the stub for the release zip from the assets link and not the redirected one, I've seen people do this. So hopefully it shouldn't be a big trouble. For sure an advantage on the centralization part, now that I don't post more than 1 release a day usually. Maybe 2 at most, but not 5 or 6 like I used to either. LOL thank goodness. Frequency should decrease over time as updates become more language-specific things only.

@FreakyFwoof Downloading from github, for releases anyway, is much simpler anyway. If you go up from the bottom there's a releases heading, or you can just append /releases to the repo URL. THen you get a tag and expand the assets button. To actually put code there you need git, and GitHub desktop is a lost cause accessibility wise. Git isn't quite as intimidating as FFmpeg, perhaps curl is closer, but it has some obscure commands with bizarre, arcane options for very specific cases, which you'd run into if you tried to read the manpage.
@x0 @FreakyFwoof for me I think being forced to use it at work (as an enterprise server) just put me in the deep end. Rebasing repos, merging, origin and remote, all the lingo. Ugh. But maybe it was good in the end for my own personal life too, haha.

Many somewhat computer-literate users can stumble their way through "Download installer for Windows", but anything more advanced than that is a struggle.
This is also why the NV Access website is just all kinds of stressful and horrible for international users, especially with the donation amounts prominently displayed on their download page. "Skip donation this time" should have never been an acceptable name for a button that actually means "download."
@FreakyFwoof Worth remembering that Git and GitHub aren't one homogeneous thing. I find Git useful as a developer, and just happen to currenntly and primarily using it with GitHub.
In the future if I move away from GitHub (not impossible), I will still probably use Git. If I move away from Git, I will still use version control for code.

@jscholes @FreakyFwoof @x0 I'd be curious how many of you have tried or switched to Microsoft's GH? They really tried to sell it, but as much as I like the nested commands I got so used to git syntax that I just use it mostly still. That and this is a great point about at least letting you move outside of GitHub with Git to other version control systems if you don't like your repo hosted by the big MS. Also GH I believe is definitely GitHub only which limits it and why I never switched. Maybe a bit of both problems for me.
I use it extremely often and like it a lot. But it's not a Git replacement. It's just a command line GitHub API client app for GitHub-specific features (with a few Git helpers for convenience). @FreakyFwoof @x0

It could help me avoid navigating a lot of the site and just do things via CLI, hmm. Might make it easier to approve PRs, although these days I like the rich diff view if I can see it on web, else I just do CLI diffing. But still. Do you like nonsense? Today, for the second time in my life, I have been asked to convert a "pirate" copy of an old (50y+) movie into the DCP format, for a cinephile club. Not because they do not want to pay the copyright holders, they actually did. But that did not give them access to any copy of the movie, they are on their own. The previous time, the distributor would only send them a French-dubbed version, which was a no-no for them. They are not even obscure unknown movies, but classics. 🤦♀️

@FreakyFwoof I can't see them going under man. The product catalogue is still wicked valuable and the brand is super well known, even if its rep isn't all shiny all of the time. At most I'd expect chopping of some comparatively dead wood.
I've not exactly been following this, but I have heard a few things here and there over the last few years, and this isn't coming as a surprise.
For me, since shifting to Linux and open source a few years ago now, I haven't done any music production, or tried to set anything up yet, since I need a new machine really. I had tried to do some research in finding a Kontakt alternative that could either load up Kontak Instruments, or remap them to a another format - as after 20 years, Kontakt was the only NI product I used in the end - but used very heavily. And I have a ton of unfinished tracks I would like to finish, even if just for myself.
So, if anyone reading this more familiar with Linux audio knows of such a way, please let me know. It has been previously recommended to me to try using Carla, and hacking Kontakt VST to work in Linux, but I was already reluctant to go that way. I would rather find a native sampler that can somehow use Kontakt instruments, and then import the midi regions from older tracks that I've made. Thanks.
@FreakyFwoof @shye I didn't see that coming, but it is no surprise either. The lock-in approach doesn't seem to work forever. There were numerous threads on the NI forums over the years to support linux but they always just gave us the middle finger. I own a NI machine mikro, but it doesn't do a thing under linux, though MIDI has been around for a while. If NI really bites the dust this time they should open source KONTAKT so all the 3rd party sample companies can still offer their products. I have used their stuff over 20 years ago and have never needed it since so, won't be missed on my end. If they disappear or not: They should release their stuff as open source just as Steinberg released their VSTSDK under MIT just recently. At least the KONTAKT format, please.
If you did all that in Logic I'd be happy to stem out all the elements and send back a midi if you're just unable to play the sounds yourself at the moment. I have all of KK 15 Ultimate, so unless you used stuff outside of that, I'm more than happy to help if needed. @shye @pkirn @dingodoppelt
This is mostly with Kontakt Instruments.. It was Session Horns Pro and Session Strings Pro... I remember really messing with it to capacity to get it to sound natural.
To be fair, I have time for things to become open source. I have zero expectation of any carer in music anymore, and after 20 something years of Apple, Logic, and NI, I only want to finish what was, a lot of learning, experience, and hard work - for myself, and likely just to put it all out under a free non-commercial license. But, I just don't have the stamina to start from scratch. I have over a hundred projects at 90% completion that ADHD stopped me from finalizing. Another approach would be to just get a pre-2020 mac, and find cracked versions of everything, and continue where I was. As the Autura synth stuff ended up being a big part of my later sound too, when I got good - and izotope for mastering - which of course is the same company as NI, I've found some 30 second clips in mp3 that I had posted on twitter for Audiomo 5 or so years ago. Give me a sec and I'll post below a few example what I would like to just finish and put out there for others to use. It's a lot of hard work, and I don't even know if it's worth it, in the way this shitty future world ended up unfolding into.
@shye @dingodoppelt I'm gonna continue to use those tools. As a blind creator who relies on NI's accessibility, it's the thing I've used the most for the last 10 years. Unlike some other companies, Roland Cloud for example, they don't phone home every 7 days, so you can just carry on as per usual. There are entire companies that made Kontakt their whole business though. ProjectSAM, Soniccouture, Fracture Sounds, Evolution Series, Orange Tree Samples, Heavyocity to name a few. They're not all going to have to shut up shop because NI dies. Someone, or a group of someones will either take it over, or things will get sorted. Some thigns are too big to fail and it just doesn't add up imo. I have one very high-up contact at NI and he said he's concerned, but he didn't say he was worried about his job or family or anything like that. We're close enough that he could and would have said that if so. For him to be quite chill about it makes me less concerned tbh. Even if shit does hit the fan, it's not gonna be tomorrow.
@FreakyFwoof And whatever happens I hope to all hell their incredible work to keep their products accessible to everyone including their BVI (Blind and Visually Impaired) users remains. I hate insolvancies like this because there's no guarantee that the folks who get broken up will land in good hands for those of us who use products on the daily. :(

Native Instruments did a 14-minute video on the accessibility features of their MK3 keyboards, barely enough time to even cover what the thing does, let alone the keyboard functions, not to mention it wasn't done by a blind user, the target audience. @FreakyFwoof @the_spc Here's the unusual situation: because *so much* is owed to creditors, the future of these products is really secured. You have to sell it to pay the debts, and the insolvency process makes that happen.

The d͡z version showed sharper energy around high frequencies (3–8kHz). To fix this, I redistributed the energy by adjusting various parameters, including pa6 and pa5. Next update. Words like " words" and "sounds" have less sharpness already but it didn't lose its sound.
