as it is the 40th anniversary of the Apple Lisa i am once again obsessing about this photo of Atari developers Dave Staugas, Jim Eisenstein and Jerome Domurat sitting in front of a few Apple Lisas and Macintoshes in March of 1985

the Apple Lisa was used to prototype the Atari ST's TOS operating system before the hardware was ready

the photo is from this Antic Podcast interview with Jerome:

speaking of Apple Lisa source...

source code for the GEMDOS prototype for the Apple Lisa was found among the Digital Research source code that was released under the GPL by Caldera a while back

now that's how you publicly license historical source code

and people have gotten it to run!

with a full GEM desktop!

it even runs well behaving Atari ST apps!

This is the best photo of magnetic core memory I've ever taken. IBM, early 60s. Shot with a microscope lens mounted on a 35mm B&W digital camera. No post! (I got into the habit of never doing any post-processing while documenting historic artifacts for the museum. Photoshop not allowed!) #retrocomputing #photography #rcsri

I used this shot for the cover of my book of images from our museum:

This website provides the full back archive of BYTE magazine, all 23 years of it from 1975 to to 1998. It's a treasure trove of vintage tech and nostalgia, not even Archive.org carries all the issues.

The site actually focuses on old Apple magazines, but has also PC magazines and other resources on the history of microcomputing.

:fediverse: Now that there are so many people here, maybe there's a chance:

🖥️ In the 1990s, I used a #MicroVAX II with a #DEC #VT320 #terminal like the one shown here, but with an original black plastic case for both the monitor (white monochrome) and keyboard as sold new by the vendor (Evans & Sutherland).

🔎 Has anyone ever come across one of these with the black case? Surely some of these rare models were saved from the landfill.

There is a raffle to win a #c256foenix machine: vcf.emwhite.org/winpb/ . If you don't know about the Foenix computers, they are a new line of computers inspired by #retro computers, chock full of retro sound chips (real and FPGA), based on real 65816 and 68K CPUs, designed and produced by Stefany Allaire. Unlike some other #neoretro computer projects, this one isn't vaporware. I actually have an early model, so I can promise you they are real :). c256foenix.com/
