Ok so hey #Canada #GenX especially people from #Winnipeg who spent time in Eaton Place downtown in the early 80s, because that is the specific instance of what I'm certain was in many government offices and such.

Ok. It is maybe 1980 I'm late single digits and I go downtown with my gramma a lot, and we spend a fair amount of time in Eaton Place, her doing whatever she did, and me doing a circuit of Petland, a record store on the second floor, the arcade, and near the North entrance of the South building, there was a government office of some kind.

In that government office, there was a computer. Not one that #retro heads would recognize, it was large, did simple colour graphics, and had a weird nonstandard keyboard about the size of a gigantic TV remote, on a curly cable. Possibly some sort of Unix thing and I think it was networked, presumably on the Internet.

It mostly did very boring stuff and I was just a kid, I didn't care about whatever its main functions were, but I had learned that if I entered f518, there was a graphical mystery house game of some kind.

I remember that office had a fair amount of techy stuff, like, there was a kind of pushbutton video jukebox where you could watch various promotional videos, I remember one of the things it played was a Folklorama ad with the "la-lalala-la-lalalaaa" earworm, which my older California chick cousin and I laughed at one summer day that we were all downtown.

I would really love to find out what was the deal with that computer system, though.

Brrr... new introduction time cause my old one is already outdated lol.

I am Sinclair-Speccy, your local resident computer nerd that can’t actually do a lot of tech stuff like people think. My primary interests are #Linux, #OldTech, and #OStan. You’ll usually find me boosting retro tech content and occasionally posting it myself, mostly retro tech ads.

My interest in emulation all started when I managed to run Yggdrasil Linux from the '90s (I know, so interesting /s). Despite having used XP as my first OS other older OSes (mostly Linux ones) interest me more if you look at the media I've posted on my account besides the tech ads.

I’ve moved around a bit online as I started on .art as my friend was there, then bitbang.social and now oldbytes.space.

One of my favourite niche fandoms is OS-tans which is turning operating systems and hardware into anime characters, though I tend to call them tech gijinkas. I even have my own tech gijinkas universe that is hosted on my site.

As for some other stuff I enjoy #mythology, #transformers, #cats, #fantasy, #nature such as #flowers and #plants and #animals, #steampunk, #starwars, #photography, #art, #space, #cyberpunk and #scifi... there is more but I'm not writing them all.

You can check out my website here: sinclair-speccy.github.io/The-… and I hope to expand it into a tech journalism platform or something, though motivation and its static nature kind of stop me...

Unlike in the past I'm not active as I used to be, sadly.

The Christmas time, aka the time that Pawel took a longer off period and has time to go down various memory lanes, will probably lead to development of new, personal traditions such as digging up tons of vintage tech resources. This year I present GSM Online, a news site from Poland which originated as a regular source of the latest telcom and cellular phone related news from Poland, Europe, sometimes Japan, US and other places where the technology was booming. Today it's one of many tech portals but in 2000 when it started, it reported on every little thing happening in the cell phone world, including deals, new services, experimental tech that never saw the light of day outside of small pilot test environments etc. The excited eight-year-old wanted his dad to copy every new article onto Kajetek, a Polish notetaker with Braille input and voice output, so that those could be read any time without sighted assistance. Turns out their news archives date back to the early 2000 and are still available. Everything's in Polish but worth an automatic translation if you'd like to experience what kinds of tiny details the industry would focus on back then and which solutions were thought of but never fully implemented. gsmonline.pl/newsy?page=2008 #Mobile #Phone #Retro #Tech

Today's random throwback: in the 80's, the Polish TV broadcast programme which explained different scientific phenomena and technological advancements, often using imported TV material from abroad, e.g. the UK. Turns out there was an episode from the beginning of 1983 on blindness tech at the time. The whole thing is in Polish but contains sounds of the first electronic Braille typewriter manufactured in Poland, an experimental speech synthesizer, a system to read punchcards, a calculator beeping numbers in a Morse-like system and others. Would be fun to have an English translation and audiodescription for it some day. youtu.be/HQyFfMpWvRk #Blind #Accessiblity #Retro #Tech

Today I heard about Altirra, a free Windows emulator of 8-bit Atari computers. In the latest version it includes an accessibility mode, turned on from the configuration dialog under the system menu. After you do the emulated screen can be reviewed just like a modern command prompt (IE with NVBDA's review commands.) It aalso supports emulating a lot of peripherals and you can have authentic floppy drive sounds and I'm a total sucker for those. It's really cool to see another vintage #retro computer platform become accessible like this. #a11y #accessibility virtualdub.org/altirra.html

Please boost for reach: There's an open issue on Github about adding scripting support to Retroarch. This would enable scripts like the Pokemon Access mod to be ran on Retroarch, hopefully allowing blind people to actually play the game while mobile. I tried it out and am already making a team in Pokemon Emerald, and in the woods in the first few areas of the game! If anyone is good with adding Lua to things, or if anyone is good at modding games and wants to enhance the Pokemon Access scripts, I'd really appreciate you looking into this.

My brain decided to bring up this memory for no reason today. Cereal box records. Back in the day, kid cereals would add cardboard records on the back of their boxes. You could cut them out and play them on any normal record player. The grooves were made with thin plastic and songs were pretty short.

Sound was horrible. But fun.

Well, turns out #blender was being used back in 90s. Or maybe it's some kind of a time glitch...

Gotta make some cool graphics with this old #retro #CRT TV screen soon. 📺

There is a raffle to win a #c256foenix machine: vcf.emwhite.org/winpb/ . If you don't know about the Foenix computers, they are a new line of computers inspired by #retro computers, chock full of retro sound chips (real and FPGA), based on real 65816 and 68K CPUs, designed and produced by Stefany Allaire. Unlike some other #neoretro computer projects, this one isn't vaporware. I actually have an early model, so I can promise you they are real :). c256foenix.com/
