Video Release

I accomplished one of my long time goals this week by getting Doom from 1993 running on multiple monitors using all original software and almost period correct hardware!

So this is it: I am starting a new adventure on Mastodon with Kilobyte Magazine. This is a free PDF-Zine about computers and consoles from the 1970s, 80s and 90s, fokussing on #8bit machines. Newer projects around these computers and consoles are also very welcome. For starters, I will probably post some older articles on here. You can find back issues as PDF easily for free online (like e.g. on archive.org). See you arond here!

Several Mastodon instances (including Newsie) have come under cyber-attack recently by state-level actors.

#AndroidAppRain again at apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid with 12 updated and 1 new apps:

* Habo: a simple, open-source habit tracker for everyone

Enjoy your #free #Android #apps with #FDroid and the #IzzySoftRepo :awesome:

TootSDK is now open to the public! 🚀

TootSDK is a Swift package for creating apps that interact with Mastodon, Pleroma and other Fediverse APIs.

It handles the data model and network calls, with lovely async/await based calls.

The SDK is still young. There are plenty of API calls still to add. The foundations are strong, and TootSDK is very useful already.

Contributions and PRs are more than welcome!

Check out the repo here: github.com/tootsdk/tootsdk 🥳

Reminder that whatever you store on an internet site will one day vanish, even if it's stored on the largest and richest site in the world:

"Myspace, the once mighty social network, has lost every single piece of content uploaded to its site before 2016, including millions of songs, photos and videos with no other home on the internet."

theguardian.com/technology/201…

Please don't rely on internet services to exist forever, they will all disappear eventually.

Try to store copies of important stuff offline if you can. Music, video, photos etc can all be stored locally.

I think a lot of new comers to Mastodon, the Fediverse and ActivityPub don't really realise what they're dipping their toe into, and see it as a Twitter replacement. It's a lot more than that, and the potential is so much greater. A lot of things are still clunky around the edges, but they're improving. I urge people to stick it out. This is the best chance for an alternative to centralised corporate dominated platforms. Your best shot to avoid another Musk event.

Try this fun game.

Imagine you live a hundred years.
That's 36,500 days.
Imagine you get to spend 20,000 dollars a day, every single day.

Yup you're a newborn spending 20 k a day, stay with me.

You'd die a 100 years later and you would have spent 730,000,000. That's 730 million dollars.

You'd be very rich, but still would not be able to call yourself a billionaire.

No one "earns" that. No one needs that.

Billionaires should not exist.

I fed Eleven labs a bunch of samples of my voice and told it to create a text to speech engine based on them. I don't think this sounds the remotest bit like me. But who am I to say I guess. It does say in a disclaimer that it works best with American accents, and I don't have one of those.

I can't get over this New York Times headline saying Ron DeSantis is "building his brand" by wrecking public education in Florida. It reminds me of NYT’s first mention of Hitler in 1922, which claimed his anti-Semitism wasn’t “genuine” or “violent” but was just “bait” to attract followers. From 1922 to 2023, NYT is still covering fascists from a marketing perspective rather than a moral perspective.

Hello Cakers! A number of our users have asked if we'll be changing our name. We can confirm that our name will be remaining the same, due to a number of reasons:
Firstly, we would need to purchase new domain names and re-configure our servers; while it might not be expensive to do this, it is still a valid reason.
Secondly, we would need to obtain new API keys for the services implemented in our client. While this might seem easy, it isn't. We would have to update the keys, forcing all of our users to log out of their sessions and need to wait for an update to re-configure them all.
Thirdly, our Mastodon instance is located at TweeseCake.social. We are unable to change this (making this the main reason); for more information, check out this article masto.host/can-i-change-the-do…
Lastly, while the "Tw" part of TweeseCake may be related to Twitter, Cheesecake isn't, and we love cheesecake!

in reply to XSF: XMPP Standards Foundation

"Contact me via mail or XMPP at <single address>" is IMHO one of the best parts of XMPP.

I find it quite awkward to tell people "oh, by mail contact me at address1, if you use Matrix, then you need address2, when you have Signal use my phone number at <number> and when you want to have a meeting with me use that URL at address3!"

Nonsens! Mail, XMPP and SIP enables you to be reachable by a single address. IMHO a big plus!

It would be such a cool feature for @MonaApp I hope you will consider it! tweesecake.social/@brianhartge…

I want to pass on something which I learned today. This could be very useful if there are particular Twitter accounts you wish to track, such as news sources, and you're not going to be able to access them as easily in the future.

What you will do is use an RSS Reader to obtain the Twitter feed. There are some good RSS Readers around. We have one in our Leasey product which does work with what I am going to describe here, but there are plenty of others, including Tweesecake I believe although I haven't tried it there.

Use the following syntax, where the term, username, represents the Twitter username, such as brianhartgen

Place this into your RSS Reader to validate the URL.
openrss.org/twitter.com/userna…
such as
openrss.org/twitter.com/brianh…

Couldn’t agree more to what @slightlyoff is writing here. 👏

Yes, the mood has shifted against Brexit. But the road back to Brussels is long and hard | #Brexit
theguardian.com/politics/2023/…

"Brexit is no longer an abstract future goal, where coming benefits can be talked up, while potential drawbacks are dismissed as partisan pessimism. Brexit is now a lived reality, whose frictions and costs are a daily experience, and whose promised gains have not arrived."

I wrote this article on "Accessibility in SwiftUI for Widgets" 2.5 years ago.

It covers VoiceOver, Voice Control, and Display/Text Sizes in terms of adding accessibility support to Widgets.

rryam.com/accessibility-widget…

I am thinking of extending it to Lockscreen Widgets.

Nothing much changes, but I found some great examples you can take inspiration from while adding accessibility support to Lockscreen Widgets.
