Welcome to the first of the month and the first of my recordings for this delightful thirty days or so of nonsense that I'll be spouting. [Clicks of wall outlet switches.] I am just standing in my home office and I'm about to turn on all the power for everything which has been turned off for the week I've been on holiday. [The famous Apple startup sound plays in the background] That's the MacBook coming back to life. Other plugs I need to turn on are over here and over here. Lovely. And I need to power up the hard drive here. Brilliant. That means that the work laptop is ready. Yes, it has a headset in it. Keyboard for phone control is there. Let's have a look. [Keypresses.] Yes, three flashing lights means fully charged. Excellent. So the week holiday was spent in Rhodes, on Rhodes I suppose, it's an island. And it was a lovely week. I had a very good time. I'll tell you more about it in subsequent audio posts, of course. That hard drive doesn't sound very healthy does it? And we'll also spend some time this Audio Mo talking about what's changed since last year, of course. What's got better, what's got worse, what's different, what's the same. @andrew Oh it's an old synology disk station thing, really needs a tidy up but I only really use it for family photo backups and as a ramdrive these days.
Yeah I think that startup thrashing is normal. It certainly is on mine anyway. I'm due to replace the thing at some point but not sure whether its a good investment to splash down cash on another NAS at this point. I really want something solid state as well.

I assume this is not supported for Silicon processors? The default device is “cuda”. I tried “mps” but I am still getting errors. Are you able to run this on Mac?
Thanks for the write-up. Awesome, as usual! The only personal note from me is that I do not very much like the style of the glasses. I think they feel a bit bulky, but as you say, nothing in comparison to the Envision glasses... :) I know we can do better as far as the form factor goes! (wink)! :)
@vick21 Thanks Victor. I tend to agree. In an ideal world I'd prefer an even lighter form factor, but compared to the Envisions (Google Glass), the Metas are much more comfortable.
@vick21 I must admit I don't find them heavy, and I've seen some actual RayBan sunglasses which were about the same weight. Maybe it's a nose thing, if you have a smaller nose (which I definitely don't) the surface area it sits on could feel heavier or something.
@FreakyFwoof For me, it's actually less about the weight and more about the width of the overall profile of the glasses. But that's just how the Ray-ben design goes. The Google glasses that were shown at the I/O have a design that I personally prefer a bit more. Looking forward to whenever and whatever they end up with! <grin>
Mine have turned out to mostly be an expensive gadget that gets deployed during washing dishes, but in a way that's hard to explain, somehow I still don't regret the purchase yet.
@Scott Please do try to explain... I wear mine when washing the dishes because I listen to a book to pass the time, but I hadn't thought about using them to... check the dishes are clean? Look out of the window? I'm curious now! 😊
Think I might've accidentally gotten your hopes up with wonky grammar. I only meant hard to explain as in, somehow I don't regret the purchase even though I'm not using these for anything I couldn't already do with a bone conduction headset before owning them. They either play podcasts or connect to whoever I'm complaining about washing dishes to at the time. There is a window right in front of me and I hadn't thought to ask what's on the other side of that yet lol. Who knows, maybe that'll be the turning point.
This sparked enough curiosity that I've been to check what's outside the kitchen window. A brick building and another window, possibly that of a neighbour. It couldn't see in (don't even try telling me your next question would've been something different). I asked whether there was anything interesting it could tell me about out there, any sign of movement at all? It said no, the scene is calm and totally still. Naturally I checked whether it was the aftermath of a nuclear appocalypse, and it reassured me that although such a scenario would involve a lack of activity, there weren't any signs of destruction, so it was sure I'm not looking out over a nuclear apocalypse. How sure? Very sure. Well that's good to know.
@Scott I mostly treat them as reading glasses. I don't feel they are comfortable enough to wear 24/7. I wish though I could! There are lots of great uses for them, but it's like, another cool underused gadget! :)

They say they're consolidating their social media presence because of "limited resources" and then say they're no longer posting on Mastodon. I have to wonder what no longer posting on Mastodon has to do with their limited resources. Do businesses, for profit and not for profit, have to pay for accounts on Mastodon?
This is some stupid challenge. You had the initiative to post the list and they complained/commented that Proton mail was not included. It’s within their right and they are correct, Proton Mail is the only product that can be comparable to Tuta Mail.
You guys are competitors, not enemies, and should be focusing your energies on improving your own services instead of this. For the record, I use both Proton and Tuta and I am happy with both.

Proton isn't really a real privacy alternative. They use the same PGP protocol that has existed for a while. Also they don't properly encrypt things like your contacts.
@protonprivacy Why as a company that cares about privacy and free choice would you stop posting on a platform such as Mastodon? A lack of presence on Mastodon is a red flag among the many.

I got both Protonmail and Tutamail. Both I don't like the way Tuta is attacking Proton. It's not professional, not necessary and it looks like Tuta is becoming the GOP under the de-Googled applications.

I actually prefer Tuta over Proton as a service. However, I don't find it appropriate to see you all pick fights with your direct competitor so often.
Although you can choose which services you want to recommend, couldn't that post by Proton's marketing team been handled in a way that doesn't try to challenge and incite them?

This online bickering comes off as childish and, as others remarked, unprofessional. Both parties here are making a case against American big tech monopolies and their inherent erosion of user privacy standards, with their respective products, so this adversarial posture is unwarranted and disadvantageous for our collective cause. I generally love your posts and online presence advocating for our pro-european and pro-privacy tech alternatives, but @protonprivacy do raise 1/3
a valid point of not listing your direct e-mail competitors on an otherwise stellar roster. Not just @protonprivacy, but no mention of your fellow countrymen from Mailbox.org or Posteo. I get that advertising for your competitors might feel like shooting yourself in the foot, but none are big enough individually against the likes of Google or MS, and the reason we want to move away from these giants, is because we recognize the harms of monopolies and the benefits of healthy competition. 2/3
So it strikes the userbase as a mixed message to stand against a monopoly and somewhat overtly overlook the competition at the same time, when we're pushing for our alternative ecosystem. It is a fact that Proton is really bad for privacy advocates. They are marketing, but in reality there are technically and ideologically much more stable providers. #Tuta and #Posteo have been mentioned here several times. #Proton users, please look behind the scenes. This provider is perhaps better than Google, but still not a very good solution.

The Yushan alpine rhododendrons are finally in bloom once again on Taiwan’s 3,000-metre-high Hehuan mountain. The night was full of colour, with comet C/2024 G3 Atlas and a pink aurora in the early hours, followed by the Milky Way rising amid intense green airglow.
That night, the volcano was incredibly active. Above, the Milky Way stretched diagonally across the sky. As the volcano erupted, the ash plume rose vertically, forming an acute angle of about 45 degrees with the galaxy’s diagonal path, creating a stunning visual contrast between Earth’s fury and the cosmos’ serenity.

Hi everyone! I started working on a Network.framework backend for curl a bit ago.
I had a few motivations for writing this:
Wanting to use curl with system SSL without compiling anything on iOS/wa...
wait, going away? why? I know the API is deprecated, but as far as I'm aware there are no plans to remove it, and it remains secure by modern standards
that said, I wrote a Network.framework integration for libavformat a while back (never got around to submitting it), and could probably spruce up a branch like this; the biggest awkward thing in these integrations tends to be that using Network.framework for TLS also means using it for everything below it on the stack, which means any TCP options have to be plumbed to the TLS layer, which can be kinda weird (though maybe it's not too bad in curl?)
@rcombs as repeated by the team over and over again for the last six months, curl drops support for Secure Transport in June 2025. Because it does not support TLS 1.3 and is deprecated by Apple.
This is just a rebase, commit-split, and mild cleanup of #17506 to start out with.
TODO:
Expose remaining TLS settings (eg cipher suites)
Expose lower-layer settings (eg TCP no-delay)
