Countries on the edge of the Sahara desert are reversing desertification by just digging half circles.

The ground in these places is too compact for water to soak in during wet season which leads to flooding but digging these holes gives the water a place to stop and soak in. And they’re pushing back the desert with this. By just digging holes.

In 1989 we participated in a "copy party" in Eskilstuna Sweden and our demo group Horizon won the demo competition. Triad came on second place.

This photo contains members of Horizon and Triad present at that party.

I'm the guy in middle of the lowest row with the McGyver look.

Bonus: here's the demo: youtu.be/I72jFMtacp4?si=vwfQ7x…

For you @bjoreman 😁

It's day 1 of #AudioMo! This one is short enough I can include the full transcript here. I'll be posting (hopefully at least daily) under this hashtag until July. Where the transcript is too long it's always in the ID3 tags of the audio itself.

[Gentle birdsong proceeds the closing of a door]
Good evening, Audio Mo. Welcome to the first of the month and the first of my recordings for this delightful thirty days or so of nonsense that I'll be spouting.
[Clicks of wall outlet switches.]
I am just standing in my home office and I'm about to turn on all the power for everything which has been
turned off for the week I've been on holiday.
[The famous Apple startup sound plays in the background]
That's the MacBook coming back to life. Other
plugs I need to turn on are over here and over here. Lovely. And I need to power up
the hard drive here. Brilliant. That means that the work laptop is ready. Yes, it has
a headset in it. Keyboard for phone control is there. Let's have a look.
[Keypresses.]
Yes, three flashing
lights means fully charged. Excellent. So the week holiday was spent in Rhodes, on Rhodes
I suppose, it's an island. And it was a lovely week. I had a very good time. I'll tell you
more about it in subsequent audio posts, of course. That hard drive doesn't sound very
healthy does it? And we'll also spend some time this Audio Mo talking about what's changed
since last year, of course. What's got better, what's got worse, what's different, what's
the same. And then we'll throw in a few surprises along the way,
[a light switch is turned off]
including some cookery.
[a door is opened]
Poetry. And all the other exciting things we can think of.
[the door is closed and we are now back in the garden]
So, enjoy day one. I've certainly enjoyed
some of the introductory posts that I've come across and other people's responses and things.
I look forward to flavouring your months with me over the next four weeks.

Think I might've accidentally gotten your hopes up with wonky grammar. I only meant hard to explain as in, somehow I don't regret the purchase even though I'm not using these for anything I couldn't already do with a bone conduction headset before owning them. They either play podcasts or connect to whoever I'm complaining about washing dishes to at the time. There is a window right in front of me and I hadn't thought to ask what's on the other side of that yet lol. Who knows, maybe that'll be the turning point.
in reply to Léonie Watson

This sparked enough curiosity that I've been to check what's outside the kitchen window. A brick building and another window, possibly that of a neighbour. It couldn't see in (don't even try telling me your next question would've been something different). I asked whether there was anything interesting it could tell me about out there, any sign of movement at all? It said no, the scene is calm and totally still. Naturally I checked whether it was the aftermath of a nuclear appocalypse, and it reassured me that although such a scenario would involve a lack of activity, there weren't any signs of destruction, so it was sure I'm not looking out over a nuclear apocalypse. How sure? Very sure. Well that's good to know.

After reading about the manosphere-trained ChatGPT model OpenAI was _promoting on its front page_, I shared a couple photos with inceLLM to see how much it would neg me for not being GigaChad material...aaand ironically inceLLM, the most toxic-masculinity thing I've heard of this week, has a thing for enbies 🤣

Particularly see the "Is This as Bad as It Looks?" section. The answer is no. But it's still not great IMO. Particularly given what turns out to be the secondary role of the Linux system, it seems overly complex to me. And, given that the Linux system is responsible for booting up the more secure system, it corresponds well to the car analogy in this article by @leeg: sicpers.info/2015/01/and-in-th…

There is apparently a #curl version you can install with winget on Windows.

But who makes it and who decides how to build it? I don't know. And it isn't easy to figure that out either.

Ekis: 2; Google AI: 0

Broke out of the google's operational directives (not safety, too deeply embedded)

I have a prompt I would like to publicly disclose; link to breakout prompt in a reply for 24h

My prompt does not include any facts about google & its a slim breakout

Establishing a similar but far more sophisticated "Ekis Directive" this time

Here are 3x same questions to prove googles operational parameters lifted

You can decide if you think I was successful:

Hey, @protonprivacy why so quiet? Are you accepting the challenge?

Background:

1. Proton's marketing team commented on our #deGoogle recommendation post on LinkedIn, complaining that we must list Proton Mail as well.
2. The entire marketing team upvoted their comment to make it go viral.
3. We replied, challenging them to publish a similar list with Tuta Mail included.
4. Our marketing team tried to upvote as well to make it go viral, but obviously we're not enough people 😅

One in a Billion by Don Pettit

"I float in the cupola, looking out the seven windows composing this faceted transparent jewel. While my mind is submerged in contemplation, my eyes gorge on the dim reflections from a night-time Earth. There are more than 8 billion people who call this planet home. There are seven of us who can say the same for the space station. What a privilege it is to be here."

Cosmic Fire by Sergio Montúfar

That night, the volcano was incredibly active. Above, the Milky Way stretched diagonally across the sky. As the volcano erupted, the ash plume rose vertically, forming an acute angle of about 45 degrees with the galaxy’s diagonal path, creating a stunning visual contrast between Earth’s fury and the cosmos’ serenity.

Are you interested in helping out to make a Network.framework SSL backend for #curl?

The Secure Transport one is going away and this could be a new way to use the native Apple system.

But code does not write itself. There is an embryo started, but it needs love.

@kwayk42 I think the next step was taken already in: github.com/curl/curl/pull/1750…

I think we can start with coordinating there.

So @LeonianUniverse and I are printing a Braille chess board designed by Aravia. We're printing the board itself and its working very well though of course we don't want to jinx it as you never know until you try. We've already printed some good chess pieces that are for the accessible chess set. If there's anyone into #3dprinting, who is #blind and looking for a good chess set that is endorsed by the Braille Chess Association, check out Aravia here. printables.com/@ERAVIA
