I gave up watching tiktok a number of months ago, and now it's time for Reels and YouTube Shorts to go as well.
I have a theory that they trigger the same areas of the brain that gambling lights up.. and it's not so much about the watching, but about swiping to see if you ✨win✨ by finding something fun. I noticed that I'd be watching something I was enjoying and just swipe anyways to see if the next clip was ✨better✨, which feels like classic gambling behaviours.
Ugh! Well, figured out after many hours of learning and troubleshooting that I have yet another piece of equipment that doesn't do what I want even though it theoretically should! The whole point of me getting a USB Mixer was so that I could choose what analog inputs do and don't get routed over USB to the machine it's connected to. An Audio Interface such as my Evo will route everything or nothing, so that wasn't the ticket. turns out, though, that USB analog mixers do not do this, either and that is what this one is. What I apparently want is either a digital mixer or hybrid mixer with a routing matrix. So, guess I'll be taking a trip to Guitar Center with these two things when I get back from TN and see if I can sell them.
Now, I'm quite pissed and have noone to blame but myself, because if I would have explained what I wanted to do clearly to the person that recommended this, I would be willing to bet he would have recommended something else.
I just configured a new Ubiquiti wireless access point... well, actually an old one that was taken out of service last year when I wasn't home to fix broken things. It was easier to replace it than to walk someone through getting this one working again because of how it was mounted and such.
Anyway, adopted it to the controller, and devices automatically roamed to it. Then when I upgraded the firmware, those devices roamed back to where they were, then back again when it came back online. Nothing actually dropped for long enough to cause a noticeable problem.
Now I need to actually install this AP where it's meant to go, re-replacing the one it originally replaced. LOL!

today I discovered that a whole stack of my personal files, including multiple books I had written and performances recorded, were no longer on my hard drive, because Windows had deleted them "to free up space" and only kept the copies on their onedrive server. That's not a backup. That's deleting my work without asking me. I'm switching to Linux.
Really impressed with my Bazzite VR experience today. Was able to play a few hours of Half Life: Alyx and Boneworks today :D The main issue I ran into (with both) is that Steam Link will cut out when you first launch the game when trying to pre-compile shaders. Sometimes this leads to Steam VR bugging out and requiring a reboot in order to reconnect. After the first launch the experience was completely seamless.
Just a quick note for everyone who upgrades to Mona 7 on the mac. Once you install the Mona app from the mac appstore, you will find in your applications folder a mona app and a mona 2 app. the mona 2 app is the new Mona 7 app so once you have run the mona 2 app your settings will be synced from the older Mona app. Once you have purchased the Mona ultra upgrade the old Mona app can be removed from the mac and your dock and then you can rename Mona 2 to Mona and add it back to the dock and your good to go. Just wanted to pass this tip on to mac user’s.
Small hint for those who want to upgrade to Mona 7 ultra and use the one-time purchase upgrade offer from Mona Classic Pro Max, if you see the one-time purchase option grayed out, run Mona Classic, then return to the Mona Ultra screen. The option then appeared available to me, and I could make the purchase without problems. CC @MonaApp
@TheVoiceGuy Corrct, I just had to download it manually from my apps in the Mac app store. It doesn't get downloaded automatically if you didn't preoder it on that particular machine.

I did what you suggested and it worked on my Mac - thank you! On my other devices (iPad, iPhone), I had to download Mona and then click the rather small Restore Purchases link inside Settings > Mona Ultra to activate it.

Had to run an errand today that involved navigating what I consider to be one of the worst intersections in the city - it's between two shopping areas and just slow and clogged and everyone is always grumpy.
Two people were standing OUT IN THE RAIN, making giant bubbles that would float into the intersection and interact with everyone. It was total magic.
Am I wrong, or is there an NVDA add-on that can recognize an image if I'm focused on it? That is, I arrow to a graphic on a webpage (or press g), hit the keystroke, and get OCR and/or a description. I know nvda-r can do this for the screen, at least the OCR part, but what if I only want to target an image or figure element?

Ok fun fact that I found out a few weeks ago. All the way back in like 2007/8 when Logic Pro 8 was released, Apple included one of Brandi's songs (Late Morning Lullaby) as a project to demo what the software was capable of. They've been doing this for years, but I actually thought she was a relatively new artist and didn't know she'd been releasing stuff all the way back then. Also love Tiny Desk, great series with a really diverse range of artists.

Do we know what the processor in the BrailleNote Evolve is going to be? Apparently it will come with 32 GB RAM and two Thunderbolt ports, which seems promising. But there's a huge difference between minimum hardware and optimal hardware now, so it would be good to know which side Humanware is closest to.
Core Ultra means the ram is likely fused lpddr5. Which makes 32GB a good bass-choice, since there are too many Core Ultras whose bass ram is 16GB. 32 is a comfortable amount for *most* people and significantly good for the target audience.
@jackf723 Yeah, I'm genuinely impressed. They could have gotten away with 8, easily. Windows *will* run on that hardware, and if their benchmark is "can it run Keysoft?" the answer is probably still "yes". They're making a statement with that number and it's one I'm not sure they've ever made before.
I must admit: I'm quite tempted to buy one of these as my couch/bed/car device. I want to hear more about its battery life and startup time from cold/sleep first though.
And unless I've missed it, it doesn't include a SIM card slot for mobile data which is unfortunate (although I could just keep a USB-C modem in the case or use wi-fi hotspot mode on a phone). @jackf723
@jscholes For the record, the only cpu's that seem to have board support for cellular these days are Arm or other such SoC's. And none of the Core Ultras really set themselves up for modem support. Given how little room there is on a 12.9inch mainboard, I wouldn't be surprised if they used all the real estate they could, particularly given the inclusion of two Bluetooth radios.
@jackf723 @jscholes And afaik the more radios you have, the more certification pain you get from all the countries you're trying to sell to.
AT is one of the worst markets to be in from that perspective, since you're mostly selling to individuals, you don't have high volume to spread the costs over, and your customers are extremely geographically diverse.
@miki @jscholes Cellular certification over here is insane, the FCC's rubber-stamp cost has to be in the 5 figures which is a major hit when selling at low volume. There was a time when it wasn't that way, the last vestidges of that in the AT space being the Levelstar Orion and the Braille+18 which had modems. Figure that predated the big phone manufacturer lobby (Apple and Samsung, most likely) to rais the rates to be unattainable for most.
@jackf723 @jscholes and then you have places like Australia, where (AFAIK) devices which the carriers haven't verified to be supported are basically barred from working by regulation, and it's on the carriers to decide which devices they'll even bother with.
@miki @jscholes The SensePlayer and Orbit Player, both of which use the same Mediatech Helio P35 SoC, have cellular modules. Well, the SensePlayer does, the Orbit Player might actually not since it doesn't produce an IMEI like hte SensePlayer. Figure in the case of the SensePlayer it was because the only SoC's available to Hims/Selvas were those, and given chip shortage and all, it was probably best to claim plausible deniability so long as the modem was left inactive.
@jackf723 @miki @jscholes Does it actually have cellular capability enabled? I didn't think it did. Yeah, at this point I'm just resigned to using an Android phone as a hotspot or whatever. Maybe the thing that will push me to buy an ARM laptop will be cellular. Kind of a shame we're not at the point where Humanware could just use one of those.
@jackf723 My potentially naive take is that if you're integrating a radio that has already been certified, the requirements for your product should be significantly lighter. Place the bulk of the burden on the party for whom it can scale. @miki @simon
@jscholes @jackf723 With cellular, it's not just certification, though that's a large part of it. I have heard from a somewhat-reliable source that Quallcom et al won't sell to you if you're not doing millions of units, so you have to resort to shady sellers sourcing their parts from god-knows-where.

Does anyone with essential tremors have any experience with using a mouse versus a trackball or a trackball mouse?
I've developed essential tremors that have been getting slowly worse this last year and I find myself having difficulty sometimes clicking on something like the X that closes your browser. I used a trackball in the past so I'm wondering if going back to one would help?
*sighs* I should not need to say this but... Telling someone to "get over" their mental condition or neurodivergence doesn't work. Nobody, no matter their condition, should ever, *ever* have to hear "get over it," "just be normal," or anything implying their brain can just be normalized, controlled or that they're making it up. Sure, I'm sure some people in the world fake mental disorders or other neurodivergence, but most of us aren't. Most of us are just trying to survive in a world that's rarely if ever accommodating to us and our needs, depending on what those needs are. Hearing that we should just get over ourselves never, ever helps, and often does more harm than good. You know a neurodivergent person? Great! so then you help them with whatever they're struggling with. You accommodate them. You ask how you can make their sensitivity, anxiety, stress level, focus, or whatever else easier in your environment. You absolutely do not tell them to get over themselves or just be fine with things you might think are completely fine and nondisruptive, but that might thoroughly disrupt them. Your experience of tolerable isn't everyone's experience of tolerable. Demanding someone to get over a sensitivity won't make it any less stressful to them. Don't do this. It's not cool. Ever

Okay so I don't normally say things like this but I need to get it off my chest. Just because you are a different culture than me doesn't mean I am a poor little American who knows nothing about the world. I get it, you have experienced different things. We all have. I love learning about other cultures because yeah, America actualy has shitty media and realy sucks when it comes to knowing about things outside its little bubble, but that doesn't mean that every American is a stupid ignoramus who just is weak and hasn't experienced anything. It doesn't mean that you should hold your culture over there head and act all superior because you have done/have learned/can do things they can't. Again, I love learning about other cultures and places, but every time someone does this it is super discouraging to anyone wanting to learn about your culture and or way of life. Please, whether you are American or not, do not do this to other people, it makes you and your people look like belligerent assholes and discourages anyone from trying to understand your culture.

Edit: many people raised below that the article is talking about texts written in very classically trained English detected as AI generated, which is the case for many Kenyans. It is documented that many Kenyan workers have been hired to train LLMs, but I made an assumption that it was the reason for this detection while it may not be.
