Opnsense upgrade went sideways probably because I was messing with a custom kernel on there a long time ago and forgot, but the recovery from a USB stick was super easy -- it auto imported the config, cloned everything over including all the packages that were installed, and was running "from a live environment" while that was happening which was neat. and then when it was done it was just a simple reboot to boot off normal storage again

Heute, am dritten Dezember, ist der internationale Tag der Menschen mit Behinderung. Zur Feier des Tages werde ich heute richtig doll nervig rumbehindern.
Eigentlich wollte ich heute das Tool zum Barrieren melden in einer Testphase veröffentlichen, aber meine Behinderung kam dazwischen und hat mir neben allem nicht erlaubt, in den letzten Tagen was zu programmieren. Dauert also leider noch bisschen.
Das ist 1 Symptom oder Beispiel davon, wie oft die Verantwortung für notwendige Veränderung auf selbst Betroffene abgewälzt wird. Es ist seit Jahren völlig klar was zu tun wäre, man könnte jederzeit Ressourcen dafür holen, aber hat halt noch niemand gemacht, weil man damit kein Geld verdient oder aber den Staat mit selbst-auferlegter Bürokratie nerven kann.
Ich bin bisschen müde, dass das gute Zeug immer aus der Zivilgesellschaft for free und aus dem Ehrenamt kommen muss.

Von den 30 Leuten, die aktuell Mitgliedschaften haben (Danke, ich liebe euch alle 💚) sind in etwa zwei Drittel selbst behindert — und das sind nur die, die ich kenne. Es ist ernsthaft so ein Witz, dass es schon wieder diese Personengruppe ist, die diese Arbeit nicht nur ideell krass unterstützt, sondern auch finanziell.
Aber das ist kein Einzelfall. Corporates sponsorn Behinderte nur, wenn sie inspirierend und nicht nervig sind.
Ich meine, schaut euch den NVDA Screenreader an. NVAccess ist eine zu sehr großen Teilen von Behinderten getragene Organisation, die die beste verfügbare Screenreader-Software und unzählige weitere Tools open source und frei zur Verfügung stellt, damit Blinde weltweit mit Computern arbeiten können.
Große internationale Konzerne verdienen auf dieser Grundlage Millionen, und geben überhaupt nichts darein zurück.
Wenn ihr eine Gesellschaft seid (UG, GmbH, AG, …) sagt bescheid — ich nehm auch mehr Geld von euch ohne Steady und schreib‘ euch ne Rechnung. Ihr dürft mich auch gern für Qualitätsarbeit für euch fest einstellen, wenn ich dabei hier so weitermachen darf.
Fest steht: Diese Arbeit muss dringend finanziert werden, und als Firmen habt ihr mehr als alle Anderen die Ressourcen dazu.

After some years of using an iPad Pro 12.9“ with an M1 chip more or less frequently, I’ve now treated myself to an iPad Pro M5 11“ with its Magic Keyboard. And boy, do I love this combo! It reminds me why I loved the 11“ MacBook Air so much in its day. This iPad has the right size for my hands. The bigger screen was too big for me, and the smaller screen of an iPad Mini is too small, and there are no good keyboard choices. But that 11“ iPad Pro is exactly my fit. And I went for the pro because of Face ID. I don't like the Touch ID sensor in the Power button on the iPad Air and iPad A16 models. And now that the camera is in the top center of the wider edge, its use is much more natural than it was on the older iPad Pro where the camera was at the top in portrait mode. And this thing is fast! Holy moly! The last time I felt this comfortable with an iPad and keyboard combo was when I was using the iPad Air 2 and a Logitech Type+ keyboard cover. This M5 iPad Pro and its magic keyboard are just the right combination of size and weight to feel super portable to me.
And speaking of the new iPad, I took the opportunity to upgrade my Ferrite by @wooji to version 3 Pro. Especially the keyboard shortcuts on iPad peeked my interest. I am a VoiceOver user, and the problem with fine-grained editing with a touch screen alone was the delay between a double tap and the reaction from the app not making it possible to edit in real tiny bits. However, with the keyboard shortcuts now available to me, I found that I can edit as precisely as in REAPER on the Mac. Even some concepts like items on tracks in REAPER translate to clips on tracks in Ferrite. Hey, it even has splitting of clips and ripple editing! And with the iPads supporting audio interfaces such as the Zoom recorders, the iPad becomes a really portable podcasting studio for me. I played with this yesterday and will continue to familiarize myself with all the Ferrite concepts today, so that I can become as proficient with it as I am in REAPER on the Mac. And so far, I'm really impressed!
I'm considering the upgrade. Do you still go for the pro max phones? I'm conflicted about it at the moment. Loving the phone, but not the size. I'm really interested in how you find the responsiveness of VO on the M5 chip?
@serichsen Well, the iPhone 17 has a different chip than the iPad M5, but responsiveness is awesome on both devices. I upgraded to the 17 Pro max, and compared to the 16 Pro Max I had before, this one has much better battery life and thermal management. The 16 Pro max frequently became hot like a frying pan, the 17 Pro Max doesn't break a sweat in the same scenarios. And the battery definitely lasts longer. A worthwhile upgrade for me. And no, I never considered the iPhone Air.
I do love the battery life. Good to know about the iPad. Did you get just the standard glass? Seems unnecessary for us to pay the extra for the nano textured glass.
@serichsen Yes, because I only got the 256 GB model. The nano texture glass is only available with the 1 and 2 TB models. And even if I had gone for that big of an SSD, I would have stuck with the standard glass because the nano texture glass indeed doesn't do anything for us.
I do know someone that gets the 2 TB every year. It's a bit crazy. Now with iCloud storage, you don't even need that much storage in your phone. 256 is probably fine for both devices.
@vitallie I had one in an iPad Mini I tried out for a while, and it kept forgetting my fingerprints. I had to re-register them every other day, which became annoying quite quickly. And it didn't matter which finger. They worked for a few hours, then did no longer. I also found it awkward to use.
@vitallie Remember that this is the Touch ID sensor in the power button newer iPads have, not one in a home button like older models had. I never had issues with Touch ID in the home button, but the ones in the power button and my fingers don't seem to like each other. Besides I like Face ID.
Hey @Tutanota - any chance you can fix the font in your Linux desktop app? It's VERY hard to read, and can't be re-scaled... it honestly looks pretty bad. It's my number one issue right now.
I miss the days where if you had a problem, you could just look up a phone number or email of a company, and call or send. I don't really approve of all these companies directing you to a website full of support articles, submission tickets, and whatnot. Live chat's fine. But I want answers directly. It's even more frustrating if what you are looking for isn't even in the articles they offer. I understand they do it for the high volume of customers but, it's still disheartening.
I'm not sure I agree actually. I'm a bit of an autodidact; if I have a problem, I want to read up about it myself so I can fix it... myself. 100% get this isn't how everyone works obviously, and that definitely doesn't excuse poorly-written or blatantly useless inaccurate articles, but the problem there is just outsourcing support. That, or companies just not having it high on their to-do lists rather than the medium of the support itself. Shit support is shit support, no matter what form it comes in. I don't want to feel like I'm wasting someone else's time over the phone when I could solve the issue myself, and frankly 85% of the telephone support I've tried these days is just as useless as those slop articles.
Rubicon ObjC 0.5.3 has been released! This release adds initial Python 3.15 support, drops support for Python 3.9, and corrects a rare race condition that can occur when cancelling timers.
1. Rubicon is pure Python. This means it's much smaller, at the cost of being slightly slower at runtime 2. Rubicon works on iOS 3. It’s been a while since I checked, but I *think* PyObjC doesn't have any asyncio integration built in. Rubicon definitely does.

Very excited - got the second Cadence Braille display! Now I can really use it with NVDA, still surprised how little panning I need to do for reading desktop icons or other text around the OS. The gap still does not much bother me. Sure, it's noticeable if you're reading slower, but when reading through to the other line it's so little (like .5 inches) that it really does not become bothersome. Now to try and figure out panning on iOS, whether it can be remapped properly.
@startrek2025 ah yeah, the Braille display :D still hope they put up a public sales page soon, maybe as more people reach out privately like we did to them and buy it directly.
@startrek2025 oh, I totally get that. Hopefully over time that price can come down, I guess someone has to buy it first LOL. But yes, we spent probably over a year's income saved up to buy these, Jess got their first one and then as a birthday gift I got them a second. Now we both can be another voice screaming to get better support for it in other screen readers, like JAWS, Android and such.
oh, they're a small company out of Indiana. I think the display itself has been in development since 2017 or so at its early days and founding, and probably in the last year they got to the point of really selling it. They're first target is schools and governments which is why I don't think it's been featured on many podcasts, although Double-tap did a CSUN interview with them I believe. I'm guessing that a lot of Americans don't know who Thabo Mbeki was, and we ought to. He succeeded Nelson Mandela as President of South Africa. He had a degree in economics, and the expectation was that he would implement Mandela's vision, but he became notorious for HIV denialism. He said that people were dying as a result of poverty and poor nutrition, not HIV. He alleged that HIV was being used as a mechanism to commit genocide against black people. He blocked the availability of antiretroviral drugs in South Africa for several years, saying that they were not safe. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person on earth who finds lyrics in songs actually distracting. Where everyone else seems to enjoy them, in 98% of cases I won't like them, and will find they detract from my experience of a given song. Out of the hundreds and hundreds of songs I like to listen to, I'd say only 30 or 40 actually have words. If someone references song lyrics around me, there's a high likelihood that the reference will go way over my head. This thought brought to you by a discussion I was having with somebody who's the absolute opposite of me. Alright mastoverse, tell me how crazy I am. Lol.
@BorrisInABox Me too. It's rare for me to remember the words to a whole song. I might remember pieces, but not nearly enough to actually sing anything, and most of them are songs most people wouldn't know anyway.
Yeah I'm like that too. Music tends to mean a lot more to me than lyrics do. Funnily enough, a lot of my knowledge of modern music comes from collecting Karaoke files now, and I find I like a lot of Pop music when the lyrics are stripped out.
Huh. Just chatted in person with someone who's been on #mastodon for a while, now, who honestly thought that all the Mastodon domains were run by Mastodon. And having a different domain was, like, just a vanity thing to look cool. It only came up because they were complaining about an issue they were having, and they were on a smaller server (not naming it for anonymity), so I suggested contacting their server admin about the problem. I was surprised when they answered "Dude nobody at big companies reads those reports. It just all goes to AI or whatever." It took some actual convincing to get them to believe that the server they're on does, in fact, have a living breathing human admin who can be talked to.
Anyway, folks, support your #fediverse server admins and moderators. With money, where you can. They're almost certainly getting messages from users who think that reporting things to an admin here is exactly like reporting stuff to Facebook or Google. IE: screaming at a giant faceless entity who's never going to care or do anything about whatever your problem is.
Kinda makes me wonder if this person actually reads anything or talks to anyone, because federation is a major thing people talk about here. Also, the owner's name should be on the page when you sign up, but I can understand how a person could forget that.
@Fragglemuppet They talk more about politics than technical stuff. And yeah, it sort of is, but it's much less visible on mobile. Also: remember Myspace Tom? Just because some username and profile photo is shown to you, that doesn't mean they're someone you can interact with. At least not on the big corporate social media.
@treehugger They were brought over by political activism and a fandom space. This is the sort of person who doesn't even own a computer and just uses their phone; they would've just glazed over one, if an explanation was even offered, so they could get on with the things they actually came for.
How did the person react when you told them, that the servers are run by several thousand people mostly with their own money? Have you also told that there is more than only Mastodon, but some dozen other systems as well?

I was more concerned with helping them understand that racist harassment from users on another instance isn't something they just have to deal with and move on, or if it turns out that it is, they should move somewhere better. One has to be patient. They've never known SocMed that isn't driven by algorithms. I'm a political person, too. My start in Social Media was Yahoo groups and Forums. I joined face to play games. I dumped it for Twitter, then dumped the dead bird when Melonhusk moved in. What rarefied air are these people breathing? @Tooden This has been my frustration with fedi for a while. The majority of us, and I include myself in this, are tech nerds. And tech nerds are historically not good at communicating with non-tech-nerds. But social media is all about communicating! I think this is the primary reason fedi struggles to grow. We make it seem harder than it is, and we kind of blow off people who want to have conversations about things not related to our specific interests. See the way folks interested in sports get treated around here: mostly, they get yelled at and told they shouldn't like sports at all because it's corporate or bad for the environment or politically distasteful. Anyway, let's talk some more about the 47 hard drives I just purchased for my 12th server.
The biggest deal, from my vantage point is that tech nerds (often, not always) dislike algo-fed timelines whereas the research indicates that really most (90%) people like that. I think people come to fedi and it feels like a lot of work right up front (CHOOSE an instance, PICK people to follow) and there's no short way in. I spend a lot of time making tech topics clear to tech novices and almost no one I talk to in my rural location has ever even heard of Mastodon.
That said, I definitely love it here, am on a small instance and always get a reply back from my instance moderators if I report a spammer or something similar. This is what I wanted and I'm delighted to have it, but I can see how it's not for everyone which is maybe fine?
@jessamyn@Tooden Yup. There is a place for content consumption. I’m not on peertube for that reason. I turn on YouTube before bed and I just want a machine to insert content into my sleepy ear holes.
That's crazy to me. Though maybe it was because my instance has signs ups that must be manually approved, so right away you know you're talking to an actual person.
@silver_huskey I think even that's going to become less clear as more and more big corporate websites start requiring age verification. Just because your account needs some sort of manual approval is already not really triggering people to think "There's a human in charge somewhere". They're just thinking "Probably some exploited and underpaid contractor in another country has to verify my identity somehow."
all I did was power off my server after dropping in a new FreeBSD kernel so I could clean the fans and whatnot while I was taking it offline for the upgrade and then the damn thing wouldn't POST and I took it all apart and started troubleshooting yanking everything out and reseating RAM and then I realize it's the BMC being naughty and it had two settings enabled:
one does a hardware inventory on boot which it says can take minutes
another doesn't let the server POST until BMC and hardware are fully in sync which it says can take 90 seconds

Have certain folders you always want quick access to in macOS? Add them to the Finder sidebar so they always appear under the "Favorites" section, as well as the "Where" popup menu in open and save dialogs, by selecting them in Finder and choosing File > Add to sidebar (or pressing Command-Control-T). Today I fixed a couple edge cases in Godot's text edit widgets, set an initial focus for screen reader users in the editor (because otherwise focus is completely unset and you have to route to a control first) and labelled a few unlabelled buttons. Going to have to slow down on this project for a bit, but if I can maintain this pace and the quality is good, we could have a very accessible Godot 4.7.
Really felt great to see the text edit bugs fixed. Having written a screen reader myself, I know those are a particularly salty PITA. So easy to off-by-one in at least half a dozen different locations with those.
So apparently iOS added support, either intentionally or accidentally, for multiple braille displays connected at once? I'm not finding any docs on Apple adding a multiple braille display feature - it's very interesting that people have it working.
While visiting New Jersey in October, I learned about poppers. My gay buddy from high school told me about that. It's basically a gay party drug that shows up at clubs. I asked how one acquires the drug and was told, it's sold as certain types of nail polish remover. It can also be sold as VCR cleaner, but les often now that VCR's have been phased out. Apparently sniffing poppers to get high results in amazing sex. I would not know. i tried to find out more about the culture behind poppers online. But all I can find is articles explaining the risks associated with the usage of this so-called drug. Does anyone know anything about this phenomenon?
At least in my high school friend group, poppers was just another word for whippets. But it's possible this is a Canadian thing, or that my friends were morons.
Sheesh, Martin, and I thought you were one of the cool kids LOL. Whippets are the little cans of Nitrous Oxide (IE laughing gas, like you get at the dentist). They're sold for making whipped cream. But I don't think anyone has ever used them for that, even once.

Oh, true! Well, children: back in the day, whenever we wanted to watch a movie, we had to walk up hill, both ways, in six feet of snow, to go to a place called Blockbuster, so we could pay for a large rectangular object that sometimes contained a movie that we could only keep for two nights. Usually, though, it was broken. Anyway, when we finally arrived, a minimum wage employee would be rude to us while charging us $500 in late fees for the last movie we forgot to return, and then telling us they didn't have a copy of the movie we actually wanted to watch, so we'd have to watch American Chainsaw Ninja Robots XXVI instead. When we finally got the movie home, we'd have to engage in a ritual called "rewinding" in order to appease the Gods, so that they might allow us to actually watch it.
@fastfinge You forgot the important part. Complaining for half an hour about the bastard who was obviously not taught kindness as a child, hence your need to rewind.
We were always the other way. If we got a tape that was already rewound it was a half-hour celebration, because it meant that tape was completely new and had never been played by anybody before, so it would actually look and sound decent.
