🚨🇬🇧 Today at 5.15 GMT the UK Parliament debates the petition against #DigitalID - the most successful petition to date.

btw fun fact: openAI gobbled up half of the dram market. that's why as you may have noticed, ram prices have gone crazy high this year.

youtube.com/watch?v=9A-eeJP0J7…

it's a bit silly if you ask me. the high-end markets are going to be completely screwed for the next few years.

in reply to Leah Rowe ( #39c3 ☎️FORK☎️ )

idk, call me crazy, but maybe enforce anti-trust laws, don't allow monopolies, etc. seems sensible to me. don't let a single corporation reduce the amount of ram the world can buy by 40%.

and modernise the laws against price fixing and so on, so that you can actually punish this sort of thing

letting one american company destroy the world economy seems pretty dumb if you ask me. maybe... don't let them do that???

Dear OSS community on Mastodon,

Every day I scroll through my feed and I see proud announcements like:

“First Alpha Relase of HyperTurboWidget available"

or

“Version 2.7.1 now with improved glorb handlers!”

or

“Flux Capacitor version 4.5 is out”

… and I sit there wondering if I should be excited, terrified, or calling a licensed electrician.

Don’t get me wrong, I love open source. I just have no idea what three quarters of these projects actually do. Are we talking about a web server? A file system? A middleware thingy that keeps the flux from overflowing into the space–time continuum?

So, dear OSS developers of the world: When you announce a new release, please give us (your adoring but slightly confused audience) just a tiny bit of context.

  • Tell us what your software does.
  • Tell us why this release is cool.
  • Tell us what it requires to work.

Example:

We are proud to announce Flux Capacitor version 4.5 is now avalaible. While it creates a nice wormhole to 1955, it requires an underlying gigawatt stack 1.21 to work reliably.

Because nobody wants to cheer enthusiastically for “v2.7.1” while secretly Googling “what is a glorb and why does it need handling”.

Yours truly,

Someone who wants to celebrate your achievements

Shai Hulud may have been a bad surprise, but what is not a surprise is that it started with a #github vulnerability (in the Actions product)

Their approach to #infosec in general (especially for their JS and container registry products) is horrendous.

Need to access a public JS package published on github? you need issue a personal access token.

Need to pull docker images from there? Fine grained (per repo) tokens not supported - you need to use a classic token with too many permissions.

Re: last boost (mastodon.nz/@XauriEL/115681024…), I respect authors, artists, and other people who take this position, and I think it's a good reason to refrain from at least some uses of generative AI. As for my own open-source work, I don't really care if it's used in any way, even by generative AI without attribution, as long as it helps improve the state of accessibility. And, yes, as long as I can make a living.

I don't give a shit about "copyright infringement". I care about the product of my labour being appropriated and used to create an inferior copy of my work that is crowding it out and depriving me of a livelihood. Pirate my books all you want, but don't insult me by telling me that making AI slop off the back of my stolen work is OK

in reply to Matt Campbell

Attribution's important, and you can get many of the same benefits by triple-licensing it MIT/Apache/"you can train AI models on this, and the resulting derivative works may be used as if CC0-licensed".

I can't imagine anyone would object to adding works to the generative models whose authors have explicitly-granted permission to do so. (Actually, there are people who'd object to this use of public domain works whose authors haven't granted permission, so that might even be better.)

Friends of FediMeteo,
in a few weeks FediMeteo will turn one year old.
What better way to celebrate than by adding coverage for a few new countries?

So I’m asking you all: which country would you like to see among the next ones supported?

Does anyone else experience random issues where the sound card glitches out and gets all garbly? When this occurs, the only way I know to fix it is to reboot. This happens to me ocasionally on two different machines, both Lenovos with Realtek audio. Every time it happens, it's in the middle of Eloquence voicing something. I usually hear like a quick static pop, and after that, Eloquence, and all other system sounds are garbly. Restarting the audio service doesn't help. Only fix is a reboot.

Eco-Impact Of Stuffed Animals | ShunWaste

Stuffed animals are bad for the environment

Stuffed animals, while beloved by many for their comfort and sentimental value, have raised concerns about their environmental impact.

Typically made from synthetic materials like polyester and filled with non-biodegradable plastics, these toys contribute to pollution and waste when discarded. Additionally, their production often involves resource-intensive processes and the use of fossil fuels, further exacerbating their carbon footprint.

The growing demand for stuffed animals, coupled with their short lifespan in many households, highlights the need for sustainable alternatives and responsible consumption to mitigate their environmental harm.

Dnes na nás číhá trojitá dávka pohody. Já bych se pondělí nebál. 😉

A teď zpět v čase:
Je 8.12.1976 a 🇺🇸 kapela *Eagles* vydává své páté studiové album *Hotel California*. Deska se s prodejem přes 32 milionů stala jednou z nejprodávanějších desek všech dob a v letech 1976-78 dosáhla vrcholu hitparád napříč kontinenty.

It's actually pretty easy to check previous blog posts or old version of websites from all these companies with sentences like:

"We strongly believe the future of the web is through ***"

And see through the years how those asterisks have been cycling through crypto, blockchain, VR and metaverse, and now AI.

Fascinating...still dystopically sad, but fascinating nonetheless

Time, on average, runs 477 μs/day faster on Mars relative to Earth, according to physicists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), thanks to Einstein's theory of general relativity and the gravitational effects from its celestial neighbors.

This value varies by as much as 226 μs/day over the course of a Martian year.

Over 25 years, Mars inhabitants would age an extra 4.4 seconds compared to those on Earth. We can live with that!

Very interesting! PSG Global Solutions ran an experiment on AI interview with 70,000 participants, and "when given a choice, 78% of candidates choose to be interviewed by an AI voice agent." "Women were also more likely than men to choose the AI over the human interview." "People who went through the AI interview process were 12% more likely to get a job offer and about 18% more likely to start and stay in the job for at least a month." #AI npr.org/2025/11/07/nx-s1-56001…

Am I finally done with these horrible, no good, verry bad #lemmy performance issues? I think I might be. Lemmy federation requires a lot more...everything...than does Mastodon style microblogging. People vote constantly. Posts and comments are longer. Everything has multiple images. And by default lemmy wants to cache everything all the time forever.

Has anyone been keeping a list of tech that has milkshake ducked this calendar year? If not, let’s build one together.

• Framework: welcomed racists into its “big tent”
• calibre: added LLMs to software that doesn’t need it

Just to be clear: we're listing the projects and corporations who were our darlings earlier this year, until they lurched dramatically into unacceptability. The ones who've been on a downward spiral for years, they're for a different list.

Regarding @MonaApp and all the upgrade stuff: I have no idea what's going on anymore. I don't remember what I paid for Mona a few years ago, I don't know which tier I'm on, and I don't know what my upgrade path to Mona 7 is. While I have no problem at all financially supporting the apps, services, and entertainment I like, I find myself confused about my own options and concerned that this developer is not being up-front with all Mona users. I may just stay on 6 for now.
in reply to victor tsaran

@vick21 Agreed. It has amazing accessibility customization settings, it uses actions well, it lets you control the magic tap, and on and on. I love it, and would support the developer except for what seem like questionable pricing decisions. It's worse that there's been no clarifying post, not that I've seen anyway, even after all the posts mentioning the developer and asking for explanations.
in reply to Alex Hall

@vick21 there were previously two tears of Mona. There was a base pro purchase which granted you a license to use it on iPhone and iPad, and a Pro Max which you could upgrade to that also adds the Mac version. That's the version which gives you an upgrade path to Mona 7 lifetime, that's how I understand it. So anyone who bought the iPhone/iPad only versions of Mona Classic has to go to Pro Max first or take the Mona 7 subscription.

Fantastic comment on Metafilter, on masking, that it is a constant burden of translation to be understood by a neurotypical audience.
