Question about Quote-Tooting (long: over 1000 characters)

To be clear, this is an honest question. Please interpret my post in good-faith.

I've been on masto since late 2017 (as you can see I joined elekk in 2018) and uh... never saw the need for quote toots, but I'm willing to admit that may be because I never used twitter.

I'm most aware of Quote-tweeting as a concept for dunking on something. I Know it can be used for other features, but I think it's understandable why "harassment" is often the first thing people associate with quote-tweeting. This is the main reason I don't want Quote Tooting, but I know there could be other reasons I haven't thought of as to why it'd be a good idea.

I also get puzzled by the argument that scientists / journalists need it. speaking as a former master's student, I proposed a thesis project and cited a Mastodon Toot for it. It's basically the same as citing a tweet: (link to the only guide I could find in APA for citing Tweets : apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar… )
I mean, especially since you can edit toots now, don't you need to establish the date accessed anyway? I'm not the biggest fan of citations (because I screw them up a lot or don't cite in a manner the professor wanted, not really important here) but I think this is the way to go.

So I'm asking, mainly from people who want this feature, Why? What does it bring to the table for you?

Mastodon already has a feature where you can copy the url of a toot so you can paste it into your compose window to talk about it. I've used it before to talk about Meta-Actions / defederation stuff (as you can link either to someone's receipts or to the actual thread of bad actors). Traditionally the toot url shows a difference instance's thread with that toot, which is why you can see posts that didn't federate to your instance (be that because you defederated or not).

So I am also asking, why is copying the url and pasting it into your compose window a non-starter?

The sign language gloves are making the rounds again. It needs to stop. Here’s why. linkedin.com/posts/meryl_meryl…

Fascinating article!

"Unearthing a Long Ignored African Writing System, One Researcher Finds African History, by Africans: BU anthropologist Fallou Ngom discovered Ajami, a modified Arabic script, in a box of his late father’s old papers" posted December 21, 2022, written by Molly Callahan

Do what? Change the language rules? Yeah, they use something called Foma for doing the processing, so if you get the hang of the syntax it uses, you can do whatever. Getting all the linguistic knowledge to figure out what the rules should be is a different problem entirely. English is notoriously difficult in that aspect, see E.G. the o in woman vs. the o in women, the th in three VS. the th in though VS. the th in lighthouse. I haven’t used RH Voice extensively enough to know how much of that work is already done and how many elusive exceptions remain.

🤬🤬 The NY Times has gone off the deep end! I accept that NYT publishes biased and ugly stuff as "opinion" pieces, but THIS👇NYT article is presented as "news" by Shashank Bengali ("senior editor at The New York Times and leads the live news team in London"). #StopPutinNOW #SendMoreWeapons!

Hab mir heute @unifiedpush angeschaut. Hatte mir das Ganze sehr viel aufwändiger vorgestellt. 😅

1. Einfach in der @nextcloud den "UnifiedPush Provider" installieren.
2. Unter Android NextPush aus @fdroidorg installieren und verbinden.
3. Bspw. in Element --> Einstellungen --> Benachrichtigungsmethode "NextPush wählen / @Tusky einfach neustarten.

Und schon geht es Los! 🚀

I'm not sure if it matters at this point, but I deleted my Lastpass account. techdirt.com/2022/12/28/lastpa…

Mastodon při psaní příspěvku umožňuje doplnit varování před “nějak” nevhodným obsahem. Typicky třeba před něčím, co by někdo slabší povahy nemusel chtít vidět, nebo obsahem nevhodným pro děti (či prostě nějak jinak NSFW).

Pretty chuffed that my #cryptic #crosswords have been bundled into #GNOME Crosswords [1], the crossword playing software of choice for #Linux!

Some of my puzzles ship with the software itself, so if you're a crossword lover on Linux, do give it a spin! ✏️ 🧩

@mvgorcum yes, absolutely ridiculous.
Too many things that are absurd in this article, but this stands out: While I agree that one needs to have a certain faith in goodwill, specifically of the state and there is a need for law enforcement to be able to investigate crimes, it's not like we can't have any privacy in our communications because of it.
That's just the most absurd piece in that article.
in reply to Mathijs

@structed also, I say this as someone who is explicitly not a fan of signal, because I believe it is a mistake to allow a single entity to dictate how we message/contact people, even if signal is still doing a lot of things right. But none of the interesting and complicated ethical questions are asked, let alone attempted to be answered in that crappy excuse for an article.

What if Firefox became the best Fediverse client? Could be very powerful and timely.
