Federico Mena Quintero reshared this.

In today’s connected world it is nearly impossible to purchase a secure smartphone that is made in America.

As a matter of fact the most popular smartphones on the market are made overseas such as the Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy smartphones.

May get even more impossible if #America keeps trying to become #Iran 2.0 especially in terms of #digital rights: Having a secure smartphone gets in the way since thought control is hard, how can we "fight crime" if people are able to think and communicate so freely?!

Also difficult to purchase one in #Europe at least my side of it. Not because of laws thankfully, but because devices like #Librem #Purism #PinePhone aren't readily sold in stores here even online which sucks horribly.

If I did not trust my government to spy on me - and that is always the threat; governments don't care about tracking citizens of other countries - why would I buy a phone made in my own country? A government has more influence to wield over domestic producers than it does one in another country.
If I needed a secure phone I would certainly buy the Chinese made Librem 5 phones. I really don't care if the CCP knows the intimate details of my life. I DO care that my own government would.

Needless to say that you can customize anything on your Android phone, even your default dialer app. With that being said, ACR Phone, an accessible dialer app on Android, now offers auto speaker mode, which lets you automatically turn on the loudspeaker when you move your phone away from your ear. Quick note: If you follow me, you probably noticed that I post occasional photos. Unfortunately, the default display behavior on most Mastodon instances and clients crops many images unless you click on them. I hate this, as does every other photographer here, but it's not likely to change any time soon.

You can disable this broken behavior in the Mastodon web interface by unchecking a box under display preferences.

But in any case, please be aware you might not be seeing the whole photo.

Today on Global Accessibility Awareness Day (#GAAD), let's go beyond awareness to action. And to my fellow disabled technologists, we should be thinking about how we can make our own accessibility through more powerful assistive technology. I'm particularly interested in what we can do with multi-modal large language models like GPT-4. Until GPT-4 itself is more widely available, there's also LLaVA (llava-vl.github.io/). I should really start playing with that this weekend.

@Codeberg (relatively urgently) needs more people helping to run the association behind the project. (Codeberg e.V. registered in Germany)

If you are looking for a *non-technical* opportunity to help running Codeberg please get in touch with us.

Step 1. would be joining the association, if you haven't already (join.codeberg.org/), step 2. write an email to contact@codeberg.org

Yes, this is a "pay some money for the chance to do unpaid work" opportunity, isn't it great? 🙂

👋 @podcastaddict just want to say thanks for getrssfeed.com/

I use it frequently, and it's great!

As many of you know, there's been a few focused attempts at spamming the fediverse with crypto offers. The wat this is currently happening is that someone is registering hundreds or thousands of accounts on an instance (first it was mastodon.social, and most recently mastodon.world) and then proceeding to post messages with links to get your free crypto. These messages are sent using the "mentioned people only" visibility setting, meaning that if you're not tagged in them, you don't know that this issue is happening. It's unclear how spam victims are selected, however it's very likely collecting user names recently appearing in timelines.

Obviously, just like with spam and malicious emails, if you receive one of these messages, you should not click on links - at best it's a scam, and at worst, it's something that will attempt to steal passwords or install malware - usually for the purpose of stealing your identity, your money, and so on. If you receive such a message, simply use the reporting function on your instance to report the spam to your moderators and the moderators of the originating instance.

For this particular tactic, it is prudent to consider disabling direct messages from people you don't follow. To do that, go to settings, preferences, notifications, and check the box next to "Block direct messages from people you don't follow" at the bottom of the screen. It's also possible to block the domain of the spammers, however it's important to note that doing so will remove all your followers and follows on that domain.
