Can anymany tell me how I'm "supposed" to use end-to-end encryption with XMPP?

As far as I can tell there are three totally different ways to do E2EE:

a)OTR : "[xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0364.h…](Not intended to be a current standard), or technical specification, as better (albeit, newer and less well tested) methods of end-to-end encryption exist for XMPP. "

b)OpenPGP: There are at least two different XEPs about it. XEP-0027 is obsolete, while XEP-0373 is "experimental" but hasn't been updated in almost three years.

c)OMEMO: "Experimental" and hasn't been updated in over two years.

Is there a way to do E2EE in XMPP which is neither deprecated nor experimental? What's the "Current stable" way to do it?

My "Single-Unit Hydroponic Grow Bin" 2.0

This thread will show how to build the grow bin and then follow along for six weeks as the example veggies grows.

(This is an upgrade from my proof of concept found here: infosec.exchange/@tinker/11132…)

The goal of this grow bin is:

  • To be small enough to fit in most places (the diameter of the base is 7 inches).
  • To be self contained with everything needed to grow a plant.
  • To be passive / automated / hands off - plant the seed, wait six weeks, harvest.
  • To be exceedingly cheap (with bulk supplies, the individual unit cost comes out to about $10)
  • Not require a lot of maintenance.
  • To be simple to make.
  • To be powered by a wall socket or USB battery (for folks charging batteries using one off solar panels).

This answers the obstacles of hydroponics being portrayed as requiring an expensive startup cost, having dedicated or expansive space for hydroponic growing, require special or complex equipment, or special knowledge and skills.

IT'S ADHD FRIENDLY!!!!

Start growing whenever you get around to it. Doesn't require following growing seasons.
Once you start growing, you can forget about it until it's done growing.

This grow bin utilizes the Kratky method of hydroponics.

(See how-to build in following thread.)

Viral out of Ethiopia!
Ethiopian Foreign Ministry official, Ambassador Suleiman Dedefo has secured a deal to import electric vehicles into the country.

But it's not the news that is going viral, it's the announcement of it.

9 hours after he broke the news, he is yet to delete his tweet which includes poorly cropped screenshots from his computer's browser and a tab that reveals His Excellency's adult content preferences.

They are hooting and hollering all over Ethiopian social media.

Librsvg 2.58.90 is out! This is the first release that uses Meson instead of Autotools.

This a very early ALPHA release so that distros have time to change their build scripts.

Here is a dramatic time-lapse composite image of the total solar eclipse of April 8, which is featured today on the NASA APOD site.

The images were taken by Daniel Korona from the city of Durano in Mexico, halfway between Mazatlán and Torreón.

Baily's beads shine in the near-total eclipse images, as sunlight beams thru gaps in the jagged terrain along the edge of the moon. Solar prominences add a dramatic effect to the images.

Some more info on those red filaments seen in many images of the eclipse last Monday.

Those were solar prominences, loops of hot ionized gases which follow the magnetic fields associated with pairs of sunspots and fall back into the photosphere. A typical solar prominence is ~100K km in size. Larger ones can reach 500K km.

Solar flares are more energetic events; they eject material into space, often reaching earth and causing auroras and radio disruption.

@oceane You can learn some more about the relationship between the two in this blog post from our Managing Director: matrix.org/blog/2023/10/26/hel…

New Vector/Element does have outsized influence as the company founded by folks who created Matrix, and as the #1 contributor to upstream, but the Foundation's job is to be vendor neutral and a fiercely independent steward as one would hope to see with any FOSS foundation.

We are happy to answer any questions you may have.

SDL 3.0 Will Now Prefer PipeWire Over PulseAudio

For the widely-used SDL hardware/software abstraction layer that is commonly used by cross-platform games, the upcoming SDL 3.0 release now has the logic to be able to prefer using PipeWire directly rather than PulseAudio when successfully detecting the presence of PipeWire...

Regardless, it looks like a much better candidate for a “qubes-lite” than libkrun at first glance. Might wanna mention the libkrun comparison in the Xen-vs-KVM comparison in the FAQ, since that’s what it’ll be compared against: as security-focused virtualization-backed OCI runtime written in Rust the advantage wasn’t immediately obvious but now I’m itching to try it!

Please stop using Discord for... well, anything. Development work, organising, friendly hangouts. But especially anything legally grey or which might even conceivably be against a large company's corporate interests.

Cafe Monochrome, with a 2D illustration style that looks great & surprising when stepping in. The whole cafe is covered in white with black lines made to look like a sketch. 3D objects such as furniture & lamps are also flattened. Edges of objects are covered with lines that makes them blend into the illusion.
Pretty cool experience.
