Der Beutel sollte sich auf dieser Fahrt im hinteren Bereich (±2. Zweiersitz) des in Fahrtrichtung ersten Wagens in der Hutablage befinden. Einsammeln und zwecks Weiterleitung melden wäre super, denn Fedi könnte hier ggf. besser klappen als Fundservice.

Lots of stuff broke today because a company called Crowdstrike released a bad piece of software that a lot of systems rely on. Here are some answers to common questions people have asked me. Edit: One note for people who think I'm being dramatic here and that this was all just an accident. This whole thing happened before at a smaller scale with McAffee in 2010. The CTO of McAffee at the time was Crowdstrike's current CEO. This isn't a coincidence, it's a pattern. Why wasn't the update tested better? Because tech people are expensive and Crowdstrike laid a bunch of them off over last 2 years to save money including testers. Testing is expensive and it's hard to convince a business leader that testing is important because it doesn't "make them money". Why didn't big tech companies have a way to function without this one piece of software? Because tech people are expensive and big tech comapnies laid a bunch of them off over last 2 years to save money including the people who help make things stable and flexible. Flexibility is expensive and it's hard to convince a business leader that flexibility is important because it doesn't "make them money".

How many of these critical systems in tech, transportation, government, and infrastructure are short staffed right now? Pretty much all of them. Good luck. Wait a minute, all of these people who laid off all the tech workers said they were replaced by AI. What happened? AI was just a bullshit justification to lay off expensive tech people. AI hasn't really replaced many people in tech because making major changes like shifting to AI is expensive and it's hard to convince a business leader to spend money on making changes when they can just fake it because their compensation is affected more by how many tech people they can lay off than how well the companies actually function. Someday, AI might replace a lot of people in tech, but right now most of the jobs were not replaced by AI and were likely just closed or sent overseas.

Maybe I'm a bit picky, but with Snowden and the latest databroker files (in Germany) in mind, I do not want to use YouTube / Google any more.
I know there are anonymizing Youtube proxys around, but google doesn't like them and sabotages them. ...

I used to dream of making an MMO. I have several code bases where I've started on exactly that. Even the current engine started life because of my dreams for an MMo. The longer I kept working though the more I realized that no. No I most likely do not actually want that. Moderating a forum, moderating this mastodon, moderating a few discords really put it into perspective. Not only is the code much more complex, not only will upkeep and continued development take a lot of energy, not only will it be expensive but it will also be a very thankless task. A constant uphill battle. You can only ever choose between premature optimization or tech debt. And the longer a project lives, the more it grows organically, the messier it naturally becomes. Combine all of those things and you end up with a very unpleasant sandwich indeed. So I get it. Life's short, life's messed up enough without those problems. Sad news, but he does a bunch of work already, and maybe now he'll feel better about working on things that give him more joy. Some people are just truly awful and if you realize it's too much, then it's best you stop. Good on him. It might be slightly different if you spent a lot of money on the game but even so. Did the money you spend lead to fun? Should have been worth it. If it wasn't hopefully you know now how to better spend your funds. This is simply what live service games are.

@talon I wasn't exactly a hard core player, though I did play it for 8 hours straight towards the end of last year when the beta came out lol. Still, it was good fun. Just a shame I could never find where that premium gift card was.

@TheCube I never much played it. I got confused a lot. But I know many did. Certainly sad that it's over, but on the flip side, now Sam has a lot of time and mental freedom to focus on other things if he chooses to. Or even just to finally take a rest. If the game isn't set up for smaller communities where individual servers can be hosted, maybe it's better to look to the future and see what he can come up with next.

@talon Why didn't he sell it? Someone else may have been willing to try, and he could get free and get some cash. Most of what I heard is "I'm burned out, and someone may be saying some naughty things to kids, but I don't know, and there's no evidence, but maybe, so shut it all down. Plus, God told me to." I get being burned out, but burning it down in response is a real crap way to inspire confidence in potential users of any future projects.

@bryansmart I don't think so. It's been up for 10 years or so and he did try to get more people to help, but it reads in the post as if it didn't work out. Selling a project like this is easier said than done and I can pretty much guarantee you nobody would've bought it to continue it.

@bryansmart not to mention sentimental value. Maybe he didn't want to sell it because it's his, and he feels like he doesn't trust anybody enough to continue his ideas. Plus it does say that it might return at some point, so that might have been another point against selling it even if it would have worked, which is highly unlikely.

Updated my search engine article to add information on Ghostery Private Search’s reliance on Brave Search. In my tests, all Ghostery results seem to come straight from Brave. Excerpt from my article (linked):

Ghostery’s own documentation at the time of writing is extremely misleading, using clever language that seems to heavily imply the use of an independent index and crawler while not saying so outright: Ghostery says it “gets you objective results from a unique search index” and that it will “crawl it’s [sic] search index.” Privacy claims require trust, and word games do little to build it.

This is even more misleading than DDG saying it has “over 400 sources” (one source for organic link results, at least 399 for infoboxes) and its CEO claiming that it downranked Russian propaganda (Bing downranked it, and DDG doesn’t have permission to modify Bing results. DDG just took credit for it).

Oh, and there’s no such thing as an “unbiased” engine. If an engine tells you it’s unbiased, it’s straight-up lying.

The closest thing to an “unbiased” search engine is one with no result quality standards that ranks results randomly. Full of spam without any criteria, let alone bias, for “better” results. If you thought Google results were full of slop and SEO bait, you haven’t seen anything yet.

Hell, even that hypothetical “unbiased” engine would have emergent bias towards whoever has the most pages. Own your bias, both intentional and emergent.

They are all trying to run a "search service" on the cheap. They don't want to do the hard work of building their own index. Some claim they are but it's not a serious spidering.

Anyway, you know far more about this than I do. And it all seems like a dark pattern in the end.

@bradenslen They don’t have to build their own index if they can’t afford to (it costs tons of money, talent, and not-very-public knowledge on how to deal with spam and whatnot). They can just be honest and say where their results come from and what they offer that their sources/competitors don’t.

I honestly like DDG’s predictable infoboxes more than Bing/Google ones; if they leaned into that they could have a lot more users.
