Per this episode: Dogs Can Smell Your Stress and Make Choices Based on It - New research seems to support the notion that dogs can read a person's mood via their scent. Dogs involved in an experiment appeared to have their own moods changed by the human sweat/breath odors presented to them. This "contagious emotion" then appeared to inform choices and actions made by the dog. dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/ar…

Something you may not have realised is right-handed: playing cards.

When you pick up a card with your dominant hand and add it to the front of a card you're holding in your non-dominant hand, you create a fan towards your dominant hand.

Standard playing cards have a small version of the number and suit in two corners so that you can see them no matter which way up the card is, *as long as they're fanned right*, and many modern card games follow suit (ha!) without thinking, for the convention or aesthetic

Consider mirroring important summary information in both left and right corners (Ticket to Ride does a great job putting the suits in both corners while maintaining the pleasant asymmetrical feel of having them in one)

It's admittedly only a tiny accessibility issue, but it IS an accessibility issue, so have think about it.

I recently discovered that the OpenCore boot loader has a screen reader built into it, which makes it the only boot manager accessible to the blind. OpenCore contains UEFI drivers for different hardware and filesystems, and one of them is an audio driver that works with Intel HDA cards that are very common on both desktop and laptop motherboards. There is an option in its configuration file called PickerAudioAssist that enables the screen reader if the audio driver is configured. When this is enabled, OpenCore will speak which operating systems are available to boot, and then it will speak the selected option when you press an arrow key, and it will say which option it is loading when you press enter or when the timeout expires. It uses audio files of the words and phrases it speaks instead of using a speech synthesizer, so it is limited in what it can speak. For example, there are audio files for Windows and MacOS but not for Linux, so it will say "other OS" for any linux distribution. However, this is still much better than only hearing a beep and having to guess where you are or memorize the menu to figure out which option is selected. OpenCore was designed to boot MacOS on non-Apple hardware, so it implemented audio and screen reading functionality similar to what Apple implemented on Intel Macs but for all X86 computers, and you don't need to install MacOS to use OpenCore if you don't want to. dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Po…

Yep, a self-healing metal.

Scientists have discovered that metal-halide perovskite, a next-generation semiconductor material, can self-heal from radiation damage in space. And this could be a game-changer for space-based solar panels and future power generation.

Notes from Nerdsville.

Since I started watching all the classic Doctor Who espisodes in order, I've come to appreciate the quiet horror of the first Cybermen.

With minimal paraphernalia, and face coverings like bandages, they're easily the most creepy, evoking the sort of body horror their increasingly shiny descendants have lost. The weird, elongated pronunciation adds to the effect.

Bill Potts transforms into one of these monsters in The Doctor Fails.
