Auto Reset User Account to Original State on Ubuntu 24.04 and 23.04 linuxtoday.com/news/auto-reset…

Restarting Highscore thread since it’s getting too long. End of the previous thread quoted. —- Hmm I'm still undecided on which shaders I want - currently I use basicaly github.com/libretro/glsl-shade… with adjust colors, and github.com/libretro/glsl-shade… with adjust+darken colors. I may tweak them a bit, since VBA one is rather too much, while GBA one is still darker than the original, tho not as dark as it needs to be here. The main problem is GB - GBC obviously needs the same treatment, but what do we do for GB games with GBC palettes... I mean those can be affected too, sure, but then we have custom palettes based on GBC ones - do we still do it there?
in reply to Alice

And added Clean filter now (AANN), and it's now the default too.

Additionally, about dialog shows attribution for filters now (except for nearest/none, as that one is trivial and not based on anything), since the AANN shader is licensed under MIT ^^

Also fixed edges with the smooth filter, it was using the wrong texture wrap mode. Meanwhile Interframe Blending is now Blend Frames instead, and has an explanation in the UI for what it does.

in reply to Alice

And more filter work: there's a smoothing/upscale shader now, specifically xBRZ - there is a single pass freescale shader, so that was fairly simple to integrate.

This caused some trouble with attribution, as it has a dual license and AdwAboutDialog doesn't handle that very nicely... so I had to resort to a wall of text, oh well.

I also renamed filters to less generic and more technical names - it was honestly getting more confusing than helpful. Is "smooth" bicubic or xBRZ? Well, kinda both... So now it's just:

- Nearest (previously None or Sharp)
- Anti-Aliased (previously Clean)
- Bicubic (Previously Smooth)
- Smooth (Previously HD)

Maybe there are better names, but for now doesn't seem worth it.

In Nodezator's dev branch: changed the magnetic sockets feature to make it closer to what I envisioned originally: the nodes had hands and would help you by grabbing the new connection for you.

The hands are CC0 assets from the excellent

Final version is very similar, but decided to hide the cursor. Now I use the hand that extends from the 1st socket like a cursor, instead of having it offset behind the cursor as before.

Been actually working on other things but had an idea for another variant yesterday and didn't want to waste it (already in Nodezator's dev branch).

This time the cursor is a baseball #Python #nodeeditor

The Python core team has started discussing changes to its governance model. I do think it is time for change, and worth rethinking and tweaking the current model.

As mentioned in my #PyOhio keynote, it is one of the "changelongs" I want to see. I don't know how it should be changed, maybe someone else in the community can figure it out.

I just think we should continue to adjust and evolve the model, so I'm glad to see that the team has started such discussion.

#accessibility question: how well does thorn (þ) work with screen readers?

I want to start using it on my blog, but I also don't want to give screen readers a stroke

in reply to Mahid Sheikh

Not a good idea. When using Narrator, or NVDA with the Windows OneCore text-to-speech engine, it acts like the thorn isn't there. When using NVDA with eSpeak NG, it pronounces the thorn as "th", but mispronounces some words, e.g. þeory.

Too lazy to switch to my Mac and check with VoiceOver right now.

On Gendering, Ungendering, and (Mis)Perceiving Trans People." In this long-read, I unpack the phenomenon of so-called #transvestigation, explain why & how it happens, plus explore more mundane (yet nevertheless fucked up) ways in which we perceive and interpret gender and sexual minorities. I published a new report that shows how today's cybersecurity and risk profiling systems are turning into employee mass surveillance and predictive policing tools.

Based on log, device and network data,
they let companies monitor almost everything employees do or say.

We need a serious debate about what is necessary and proportionate for what purpose and about safeguards that prevent misuse.

what are some problems you've run into in the terminal with folders? so far I have:

* accidentally putting 1 million files in a folder, so it's impossible / very slow to list
* you deleted a folder while you're still in it in the terminal, and everything gets weird
* something about symlinks (what?)

what am I missing? (only problems related to folders please!)

Changing to a directory that is, e.g., four or more levels below the current directory in the hierarchy, without having to type or tab complete on the name of each intermediate subdirectory, and without having the presence of mind to have pushed it onto the stack earlier. I installed Zoxide recently, and started to appreciate how much of a problem this had been for me - now that Zoxide was solving it so effectively.

This must be a UK thing. I have a two way camera and literally can’t imagine opening the door without knowing who is on the other side. If you won’t tell me who you are and what you want, the door stays closed and locked.

Europe generally, most people will open doors here when the doorbell rings.

We have a lot of intercoms though, and tose help. Especially in apartment complexes, which Europe has plenty of, you can't really live without one.

Once upon a time, I created a graph which analysed the @weeklyOSM outbound links, comparing the number of #Twitter and #Mastodon links.

A while later, the Weekly Team decided to not allow Twitter links anymore, as the platform needed an account to see content.

But, it is time for an updated graph!

I haven't reminded people in a while. I really recommend that people regularly download all their CSV files on their Mastodon profile in case their instance goes down (see the screenshot).

This is particularly suggested to everyone on an instance (especially big ones) for which the admin isn't transparent with finances and backup plans.

Better have a backup of your follows than suddenly losing everything!

Go to Preferences => Import/Export => Data Export => Download all CSV files you're interested in keeping

Nassau County, NY, population of 1.5 mil, has banned masks with a vote of 12 to 0 with 7 councilors abstaining

Masked advocates for masking were cut off from speaking, & one was arrested on false charges.

The police surrounded masked speakers, intimidating them.

White supremacists in the audience wore 1776 shirts, MAGA caps, & waved an Israeli flag. They recorded everyone masked & were allowed to go over their allotted time as they issued threats.

The connections between eugenics, white supremacy, indigenous struggle, and the abject failures of the so-called left to meaningfully resist could not have been more clear.

Every single one of y'all who are silent on COVID and/or refuse to mask are complicit in the fascist gains happening now & the deaths of the poor & disabled from COVID since the so-called left joined the Nazis on refusing to mask.

I am so fucking sick of this "organization." All I hear are stupid advertisements. Do they do any real honest work, or spend all their money on stupid kids singing?
in reply to Andy

@remixman lol Some of it might go to kids, but "Most of Kars 4 Kids profits go to Oorah, a nonprofit serving Orthodox Jewish kids in New Jersey and upstate New York, with the same CEO, Rabbi Eliyohu Mintz, as Kars4Kids. " Which is certainly a bit odd along with the other practices like the Minnesota AG saying that "less than 1 percent of the money Kars4Kids raised actually went to kids in Minnesota." All of that is just not convincing to me, but they won the case in the end.
@Andy

Reminder: Mask bans give police the power to do even more racial profiling.

We asked 1,000+ attendees to mask indoors this weekend, and everyone just did. I didn’t have to stop and remind a single person the entire 3 days.

There were definitely gaps in the policy, the risk wasn’t reduced to zero, but if anyone is wondering if it’s possible for events and large gatherings to make reasonable accommodations to reduce the risk of spreading COVID, it absolutely is, we proved it, and your event should be doing it too.

Holy cow, #Transitous-based #publictransit routing has just landed in the nightly version of #GNOMEMaps, and therefore the number of cities you can get transit directions in… has gone waaaay up! It can even route through a mess like Los Angeles' multiple transit authorities, or calculate long-distance trains! :blobaww:

Big props to @mlundblad for implementing this: gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-m…

Given that broadly speaking, if you're writing a new file it should probably be done atomically, why don't language stdlibs come with this feature?
in reply to rain 🌦️

Good question! In an Electron app I've been working on for a few years, I've been using the write-file-atomic package from npm. In Rust, I guess the most widely used, well-tested implementation of the renaming part of that procedure is in the tempfile crate, but it would be nice to have a convenient way to write a file atomically with just one function call.
in reply to Matt Campbell

Check out github.com/untitaker/rust-atom…. If you don't want per-file durability then tempfile is fine.

in reply to dreaminghope

@blindbat84 That is so cool, thank you for doing this! And don’t worry about the comma pauses. I’m not sure which extension you’re using specifically, but generally extensions designed to read a page will do so pretty slowly kind of like an audiobook narrator. Screen readers do still pause for punctuation, but that pause is generally short and will get even shorter if the user increases the speech rate. This is how that comic was read out by my screen reader as an example and I actually slowed it down for this demonstration, I usually read faster than this.
in reply to Pitermach

@pitermach @blindbat84 Thank you! I have heard friends' screen readers before, but wasn't sure if the cadence would still be off at speed. I appreciate hearing the recording! I'm also going to download a proper screen reader too, per someone else's suggestion - the extension is obviously not a good imitation.
