A Discord is not a substitute for a website. Or a support forum. Or an issue queue.

Or really pretty much anything besides maybe IRC or Matrix if you're not worried about the openness of the chat platform.

Something I've thought about for awhile on the fediverse... I know many people would like to see quote posts implemented like on Twitter, but I wish discussions about this were less focused on the specific affordances of twitter.

I really like tumblr-style reblogs, because they have one key difference: the original poster's post comes *first*. A quote post privileges the quoter's position, and lets them influence how you'll read the quoted post. A reblog has you read the original post first.

in reply to Misty

I'm sceptical of the quote posting functionality and would probably disable it for my posts, but the way you describe it I think would be good. To me it's similar to the top-posting phenomenon in email (which I dislike and breaks logical flow) versus bottom-posting, which is nice.

Impulsos bienvenidos y agradecidos.

While we're still not moving as fast as I'd like with Circle reviews, I'm happy that we managed to get 6 new apps accepted during the 47 cycle 🥳

By the way, the Circle committee is always looking for new reviewers. If you're somewhat familiar with GNOME app development practices and design patterns and would like to help, please get in touch :)

@MapComplete btw, I got "yelled at" on OSM for adding a lot of images of menus in restaurants using MapComplete.
One of the reasons cited was not having a license for taking image of the menu and another was some restaurants not wanting to publish their prices on the internet.

While I don't agree with either of these arguments it might be useful to add a hint about asking restaurant staff about publishing these images.

I'd be very curious about opinions on the topic in any case!
#OSM

in reply to Ame

Well, that sucks!

I'm not particularly worried about copyright, because:

- Often, there is very little creative work involved in creating a menu, thus copyright does not apply
- As restaurant, you do have create and have to publicly publish your menu in your normal operations, so database rights don't apply as well
- At last, the picture is actually saved on imgur. As such, they will get the takedown request ;)

in reply to MapComplete

I think there can be pretty designs on menus, so copyright can apply there I feel

I agree with the other points though, we don't worry about copyright infringement on wikidata either, that is handled on their side!

in reply to SuspiciousDuck

Hi, all.

I realize this is a far cry from my usual posts, but I'm desperately trying to find work, as I know are so many others.
I don't have a wide range of interests, but anything that will make my CV more interesting is a plus, so I'm on the hunt for a potential list of free and accredited online courses.
If anyone knows where I can find something like this, please please let me know. I'll do anything to fill my time if it feels within reach of my current skillset, and hopefully that skillset can slowly expand as a result.

Anything helps. Thank you in advance.

Deque university offers accessibility testing courses, and they're free if you're disabled.

No geographic restrictions or proof of disability necessary, as far as I know.

in reply to Mikołaj Hołysz

This is a good suggestion. The Deque courses are not perfect, and I wouldn't want to shoehorn all blind people into accessibility work. Nevertheless, the industry does need more disabled representation, from people who truly take it upon themselves to know what they're doing, and are able to incorporate but look beyond their own experiences. @Estrella

I'm #ISO a Spanish historian who can help me figure out: back when students at the University of Salamanca elected professorial chairs, how were the votes cast? I know all about the chaos around the elections (voter intimidation, b/u/s/i/n/g/ burroing? in extra voters, etc.), but not the actual *voting method*.

Včera sem spolubývajúci dovliekol nejakých feťákov babu a chalana. Navarili si, zožrali mi vajcia a korenie, čo by mi až tak nevadilo ale nič neupratali, akože vôbec nič. Plus sú to fetky a tie ja už toľko nemusím ako kedysi.

What's a good book that has songs in it? Either songs are a big part of the culture, magical system or plot, or characters tell their stories through song, or they just like to sing a lot? Some examples: many of the Redwall books by Brian Jacques, Princess Academy and the Book of 1000 Days by Shannon Hale, and the Books of Bayern had at least 1, the Unicorn Chronicals by Bruce Coville, and the Hobbit. You know, things that a good reader or cast could do justice to. #Bookstodon
in reply to 👩‍🦯The Blind Fraggle

A lot of stuff by Mercedes Lackey and friends, for example the Valdemar Series, has a strong emphasis on songs and bard. There's even some recorded music based on the songs that appears in the books, like an album called Oathbound: vows and honour.

While rebuilding Akira in Rust, I've been exploring other design language libraries on top of GTK, and I always end up going back to their stylesheet and libgranite widgets

It sure feels like the iOS 18.1 beta has some killer battery drain. Normally I don't experience battery problems during the beta cycle, but my 15 pro max is draining at an alarming rate. It still lasts most of the day, but this is Apple's best battery and it definitely used to be better. Naturally, nothing in battery settings looks suspicious at all.
in reply to simon.old

I observe the same on iPhone 15 Pro. I am truly hoping the final release will fix that. :)
in reply to simon.old

It absolutely does. Though I’ve had battery issues since before the beta.

For any #Blind folks interested in volunteering for Harris/Walz or other Democratic campaigns, I'm happy to report that Scale2Win, the dialer they use for phone-banking, is entirely browser-based and works well with screen-readers. (I used VoiceOver in Safari on my iPhone.) There is a script you're encouraged to follow and interact with during calls, so having a Braille display connected helped too. Didn't talk to many actual people but still had a positive experience.

OK, those of you who use BSI on iOS 18. Did you by any chance notice some weirdnesses in certain apps, like the letters being mistyped, dots missed, etc, etc? This is after multiple dot calibrations. Not sure what to think of this. Is something happening to my fingers? But then, why it works well in some edit fields, while in others BSI totally chokes up. I really hope I don’t have to reset my settings. Thanks for any thoughts / ideas!
in reply to victor tsaran

Hi there. Do you use VoiceOver when composing posts on Mastodon for Mac? If so, when you hit your apostrophe key, does VoiceOver read it as an apostrophe, or does it say right single quotation mark. Please let me know.
in reply to victor tsaran

My mistake then. I just double checked, and mine also says right single quotation mark, and I have smart quotes and dashes turned off. Do you have use smart quotes and dashes disabled?
in reply to victor tsaran

Thank you for letting me know. I didn't know whether turning off use smart quotes and dashes was going to do anything. I really appreciate your help.

in reply to victor tsaran

Hey there. I found a way to disable the smart quotes option in Mona for Mac. You have to go into the edit menu, and select substitutions, and then where it says checkmark and the specific smart quote or dash, just hit enter to unselect it. After that smart quotes and dashes should be turned off. I found this out through a friend of mine.

The issues you describe have always been there for me since I‘ve been using iDevices and are the reason why I‘ve never used BSI on a daily basis. A hardware braille keyboard is still the only way to go (at least for me).

Look, I do not care whether you support Trump, Harris or the man in the moon! Being disrespectful and insulting when people don't share your opinions isn't cool. We can't all agree, but we can all treat each other with kindness and respect. Ok, I'll go back down my hole now.

Cases for iPhone 16 are going to be tough for a while I've been searching for clear cases, and most are simply updated iPhone 15 cases with the same points of information. The problem with this is that the descriptions don't address how the case handles the camera control button. I just went with the official Apple one for now. I'll give the market a few months to catch up, then go searching again if I hate the Apple one. I've had an official silicone case for my 13 Mini for years, though.
in reply to Alex Hall

I think Apple sells clear case, but hehe yeah, $49? Not yummy!

Some time ago we had a discussion here about the best successor to the Soundscape app. Was it Voice Vista that people agreed on or was it another app? Thanks for any hints! #accessibility

@tink Yep, Just had a chance to give them a good run here in Philadelphia! Pretty cool! I wonder if you or anyone else happen to know why I hear the word "yes" after some of the landmarks? "yes" for what? :)
in reply to victor tsaran

Hm. Haven't noticed that, but haven't used it in a while. I'll listen out next time I do.

Wonder how well someone could get #Emacs to work on the #BTSpeak Braille device? I should probably try. When I eventually get one in like 5 years or so.
