Exciting update about the hackfest: We will now offer lunch for participants of the hackfest. 🍲

The lunch will cost about 8 Euros. A friend volunteered to cook for us with the deal that any extra funds would go to the local social bicycle association Efesta (efesta.net), which we both are part of.

The event will be so much bigger than I anticipated, already more than 15 people signed up.πŸŽ‰

OUTDATED⚠️
Mozilla bought the Android email app K-9 (which didn’t include any trackers) and integrated trackers as part of #Mozillaβ€˜s rebranding under the #Thunderbird name.

They even made it opt-out instead of opt-in. Their defense for breaking the law: ”we wouldn’t have enough data if we obeyed the law.β€œ

It doesn’t matter whether you ”anonymizedβ€œ the data or not: If you want to extract data from someone’s device to yours, you may do so only if they knowingly consented.

The Thunderbird developers listened to their users and removed tracking entirely. Only the beta version of version 8 contained the telemetry. The final release no longer does, at least for now.

Where web #accessibility, digital #sustainability, #contentManagement, open-source software, and web standards intersect, you'll find @mgifford always advocating for content, people, and the planet.

In his practice, Mike ensures that the content systems they deliver are built as sustainably as possible, deliver accessible experiences to citizens, and work well for authors and others who use the system.

To our loyal customers, After 13 years we are making the difficult decision to sell SpeedDots. We are extending the offer to purchase to you, our community and customer base first, because we recognize that it is you who have helped us to last over the past decade and more. Without you supporting our products through referrals and purchasing, this company would not have lasted for this long, especially in such a niche market as the blind community. We have enjoyed creating a product that has benefited so many. Why are we selling? There are a few reasons: First, health. As most of you may know, we are a small company: a company of two to be exact. Both Doug and Amy have had significant challenges and changes in life circumstances which have made this necessary. Over the past year, Doug has been dealing with Long Covid. The result is that his health is such that he no longer has the physical energy to keep up with the demand of making and selling the tactile screen protectors and ensuring that orders are properly fulfilled and shipped out in a timely manner. In December of 2022, Amy was hired by the Blind Institute of Technology Sadly, this meant providing less help to Doug so much of the customer facing work was being sent his way along with making and shipping of products. This was a lot to juggle in addition to his health struggles. Next, changes in living situations for both have led to a problem with space. Read more via: speeddots.com/

> AI and Tooling Support: It’s worth noting that AI tools are intimately familiar with Next.js and not so much with htmx, due to the lack of open-source training data.

A risk with "AI" for coding I’ve talked about is that it's trained on legacy code so it's going to be a conservative force in software dev, driving people to use outdated but popular approaches. This is the first time I've seen that happen in the wild

"Mozilla is going to be more active in digital advertising."

"we do this fully acknowledging our expanded focus on online advertising won’t be embraced by everyone in our community" - blog.mozilla.org/en/mozilla/im…

I appreciate Mozilla laying their intent out explicitly with no room for interpretation or guesswork.

Personally, I think this is not just a huge misstep, but a deathknell.
