@matt The simplest way to express it would be that there's a lot of magic for the complex stuff, but far too little for the basics. I can set up a web server super easily with a few annotations, but if I want to check if two sets of some custom class Foobar
are equal, I need to manually override equals()
and check equality for every field. This specific point applies to multiple programming languages, but I find myself more frustrated in Java because of how many other things have magic solutions.
On an ecosystem note, many of the "magical" solutions that exist are confusing and poorly documented. Javadoc is either a terrible format for API docs, or people simply aren't using it correctly. There are a lot of handy APIs that give you zero indication of how to use them, and you have to hunt for documentation across the internet. I spent many hours this week trying to craft the exact right query that would take me to an example for an API that exists.
Someone took the take of "web designers should learn how to write html and css", which I very much agree with, into a "no, instead, designers should use AI to write their HTML and CSS for them" take and I just...
The point of learning how to actually build an interface in HTML and CSS is to better understand the medium for which you are designing. The AI tool (or any tool really, that outputs code) isn't going to do that for you, because they're too unreliable to do it well and correctly.
