Hi all, I have what may be a strange request. My Nan is in a nursing home and can't go out due to mobility problems, but she loves birds. I show her bird photos I come across online but sometimes it's hard to find a lot of new/interesting ones. If you take any cool bird pictures, could you please add the hashtag #BirdsForBecsNan so I can find them more easily for her? The more colourful/exotic/pretty, the better, but she also likes to see rare/unusual birds.

I once had a sparrow chirp frantically at a group of people I was with. At first I thought it was trying to shoo us away from its nest. After a while I realized it wasn't behaving aggressively, but urgently. It was trying to get our attention so we approached it and it led us to another sparrow that was upside down and tangled up in dense ivy-like brush.

One of us managed to get up to the tangled bird to get it freed. It took a while and the whole time the bird that got our attention just hovered nearby watching us free its friend. It was making no effort to keep its distance from us. When we finally got the trapped bird free, the two of them flew off together.

I was astonished that an animal with such a tiny brain had the wherewithal to understand how to summon help and who to summon help from.

The security protocols behind this are well documented. Apple isn't 'sending your data to the cloud'. Rather, Apple has gone to extraordinary lengths to ensure that the data that they send to the cloud, which enhances on-device functionality, is encrypted and obfuscated up the wazoo.

You're being disingenuous _at best_ to suggest that this is not the case. Shame on you for amplifying this nonsense.

Man, there’s no arguing with arrogant Apple fanboys. No matter the security protocols, doing this directly contradicts their slogan. And the linked post (which you read before posting a condescending reply, I assume?) points out a number of problems with it, one of which is that Apple security is nowhere near as safe and failproof as the fanboys like to claim.

Summing up the top UA groups, it looks like my server is doing 70% of all its work for these fucking LLM training bots that don’t to anything except for crawling the fucking internet over and over again. Oh, and of course, they don’t just crawl a page once and then move on. Oh, no, they come back every 6 hours because lol why not. They also don’t give a single flying fuck about robots.txt, because why should they. And the best thing of all: they crawl the stupidest pages possible. Recently, both ChatGPT and Amazon were - at the same time - crawling the entire edit history of the wiki. And I mean that - they indexed every single diff on every page for every change ever made. Frequently with spikes of more than 10req/s. Of course, this made MediaWiki and my database server very unhappy, causing load spikes, and effective downtime/slowness for the human users. If you try to rate-limit them, they’ll just switch to other IPs all the time. If you try to block them by User Agent string, they’ll just switch to a non-bot UA string (no, really). This is literally a DDoS on the entire internet.
