Anyone around here have a 16E and have anything good/bad to say about it? I pretty much don't have a choice in upgrading at this point (I'm running a XR which is unfortunately starting to have pretty noticeable problems being functional) and want to make sure I'm not missing out on anything major besides MagSafe and precision tracking with the 16E. I have absolutely no drive to upgrade, I'd stick with my XR if I could, and am not at all excited about the prospect of a new phone, but you gotta do what you gotta do I guess.
in reply to Guillem Leon

Yeah, I have a 13 pro that is starting to experience some significatnt performance and battery issues, so I'll be upgrading too. Not sure to what. If I am not mistaken the 16E is something like the SE phones, but I might be wrong, it just sounded like that. Haven't paid much attention to it to be honest. If you find it is better than yours, I say go for it. I am going for one of the newer phones, I guess. Might save up some more and watch some more reviews before making any decisions. See some YouTube reviews of the 16E and decide for yourself, I'd say, weigh out the pros and cons, and see what suits you according to you. It should have enough battery for what you need it. I know the X phones aren't being updated as far as upgrading goes, but they'll receive security updates. I am thinking of changing the battery on my 13 pro, to see if I can go a bit more with it as well, if not, I will ship it to someonw who'll make better use of it than it sitting in a drawer here.

Yet another reason to stop using Chrome: Gemini is coming right into the browser, including the address bar ("Omni bar") by default. These features are computationally expensive at scale, privacy-destroying, and just plain annoying.

one of two things is going to happen:

- the scale of their current design will cost them so much electricity they'll stop

- they'll optimize their inference engines to not need so much energy

I'm betting on the latter after seeing my friend's custom inference engine written in C with custom Metal/CUDA kernels which can stream the layers and data as it's needed, gives you essentially infinite context, has tool calling, etc

And it runs on a 10 year old Mac Pro. He can run Qwen on it. You can load a 32B parameter model without needing ten of gigabytes of VRAM.

edit: and it's fully deterministic and 100% compatible with PyTorch

Every time I heard Charlie Kirk's schtick called "debate", it bothered me, because no Kirk clip I ever saw was anything like debate. Happily, Mike Masnick has saved us all from watching enough Kirk to properly describe what he was actually doing.

It is funny to be back in the place where I used to live for most of my life. Having been away for so long, I have all kinds of emotions: some positive, some negative. The mixture leaves me puzzled. Now, reflecting on them, I decide to concentrate on the positive ones. I have no use for the other ones. These are mainly ghosts from the past. Styria is lovely, the weather is perfect, it smells fantastically, and a school kid even fell in love with my Brompton.

Back when I started playing with Rust, it wasn't going smoothly, to say the least. I was ready to put it away and revisit at a later time.

Then came @liw, and gave me a quick, condensed version of their Rust course, and that was enlightening, to say the least. It wasn't a deep dive, it was about the basics, to get through the initial hurdles. But I got way more than that - pointers to where I could learn more, what to explore next, and how. It gave me a foundation to build on.

It was quite literally life changing, and I am eternally grateful to Lars for it.

If you're a FOSS programmer, and you're interested in Rust, their next session is an opportunity I'd highly recommend you to take.

Just thinking out loud:

Admins could previously just delete your post if they got reports about it. Now if your post is being quoted and people don't like that they could report you to your instance admin and the admin could revoke the ability for anyone to quote that post.

They may not have added the button for that yet, but it's coming

Official Announcement from Vispero:

You may have noticed that we no longer offer a public beta for JAWS. In the past, when we introduced major new features once a year, the annual public beta gave users the chance to test those big releases ahead of time.
Today, we deliver new functionality continuously throughout the year rather than in a single large release. Because of this change, we have decided to discontinue the annual public beta.
Instead, we now provide more frequent, incremental updates and also offer features via our Early Adopter Program, which gives interested users an opportunity to try out new features before they are broadly released. This approach ensures that everyone can benefit from the latest improvements as they become available.

oh gosh, wasn't there an add-on that forced UIA in Chrome for NVDA? Or am I dreaming of this. Would sure help me as enabling the flag: "Override software rendering list
Overrides the built-in software rendering list and enables GPU-acceleration on unsupported system configurations. – Mac, Windows, Linux, ChromeOS, Android
#ignore-gpu-blocklist" breaks all NVDA cursor tracking and reading in multiline controls. I kid you not. Test it yourself, enable it and restart. No idea what this does to break #NVDASR but there it is, it breaks it. I could repro it on two machines, go ahead. Chrome://flags is where it's at. (ah yes, this is now in NVDA's advanced prefs, yay! no add-on needed!)
And yup. Doing that setting, to use UIA in Chromium and Edge to yes fixed it all. Wow, facepalm moment, ugh.

Danes would be a minority in their own country

Do you even hear yourself, you complete ratfucking narcissist?

Danes can't be a minority in "their own country" unless you define being Danish as something other than "is a citizen of Denmark". And if you do define it in some other way, you're a fucking Nazi. And if you somehow feel that certain groups have more of a right to call it "their own country" than others, you're a fucking Nazi.

I am sick of these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane.

“if i hadn’t come out as trans i’d be dead right now” is a really common narrative, and it’s true for a lot of people, and it’s a big part of why trans rights are so important—it’s a life and death issue for so many of us.

but also. i just want to make it very clear: it’s ok to be trans even if it doesn’t reach life and death urgency for you. even if it’s *never* going to reach that point for you.

it doesn’t have to relieve pain. you can do it even if it’s just to feel *good*.

no bohužel to je, to, o čem mluvím.

in reply to Chao-c'

Není to o počtu hvězdiček.
A to přece stačí.

no, ehm, dobře.

A všechny bridge zatím sajou.

in reply to Matěj Cepl 🇪🇺 🇨🇿 🇺🇦

@mcepl @xChaos Do jaké konverzace? Případně to tu můžu mít jako read-only bota.
in reply to Jiří Eischmann

@sesivany @xChaos Jsem chtěl napsat něco podobného. Nemám potřebu soutěžit a píšu jen když mám pocit, že mám "světu" co užitečného říct. I proto mám někdy delší odmlky.

Recently I've been running around like a frantic chicken looking for items that I feel like I've lost. It could be a screwdriver, or a memory card, random things like that. I realized now my solution to the problem. Putting things away with intent so it tricks your brain at committing it to memory. If you tell yourself internally, "I'm putting this away here because (X) or (Y)", it'll really get you to then remember where you actually put it. This feels simple at the surface but so often we just drop things on our desks, put them in drawers, in familiar-feeling places because we think our future selves will intuitively know where that place is, but in reality until you pause to do that with some intent you're going to keep forgetting where things are. Makes me wonder how many people's forgetfulness could be solved by that, not to say the least that there are conditions which can genuinely cause memory loss and we also shouldn't minimize that fact.

Designating antifa as a terrorist organization sounds funny, because it's not an organization.

It's not funny.

The fact that there isn't an organization is terrifying.

Because it means that when YOU say something ON HERE about leftist activism, YOU can be designated a "member" and be subject to extrajudicial execution. And there's no way to deny it, because there's no roster.

(I'm not saying there should be a roster. I'm saying this is fucking dangerous.)

Make fun of it all you want; they're still going to use it to kill you.

Eek! Nice to find out after a year or so that the corporate email system your client uses, that you access for your part-time consulting, has some "useful" automatic classification of email into folders you had never even noticed existed.

More specifically, "Notification" and "Newsletter" folders. It even says that "Smart filter classifies notification emails and alerts automatically to this folder".

Yes, that sounds like an excellent idea, to automatically put what it thinks are (and might actually be) important *alerts* somewhere else than the Inbox.

(Sarcasm.)
