Been working on getting Slidgnal, a #XMPP to #Signal gateway built on #Slidge back up and running with a mix of Go and Python; after a recent spree of work, we have fairly good support for 1-on-1 chats with reactions, attachments, etc. all working. If you want something that is light-hearted, doesn't take itself so seriously, full of pop culture references, and yet is science fiction, one series I just read is "Galactic Detective Agency" by Gary Blaine Randolph. I have no idea if it's available anywhere but Kindle, but so far there are nine books. Regular guy with a computer programming job suddenly gets pulled into a…well…galactic detective agency to solve various mysteries.
@DelilahTech I'll have to retry them. I was introduced to Mur Lafferty via the Escape Pod podcast, where they had a series of Union Dues short stories published. I believe I also read a novel in that universe...called Keepsie, I think? I never quite vibed with the writing, but that was a long time ago now.

What will happen when the bubble burst? The AI startup will collapse. Their VC backer will probably lose a lot. Microsoft will probably take a huge hit so will Google. And Apple but the latter might be able to be more resilient. AWS might implode but they have all that side hustle. What else ? Nvidia will probably post huge losses.
Very sad. My VarioUltra 40 kicked the bucket today. It was my last hope for Bluetooth Braille on Linux. If anyone knows what kinds of batteries are used inside of these units and whether one powers off with the battery removed, let me know. For now, it keeps going up to 5 cells charge, trying to exit stage 1 bootloader into stage 2, freezing, draining itself, re-doing charge to 5 cells, freezing, ETC. Gosh. How horrible, and what cheap batteries it had. Although, about a year of storage might give most lithium-polymer ones the same result, I tried to give it at least a yearly recharge cycle but alas now that hope is dashed.
Good news on the horizon. The VarioUltra works, even though it think its at 80% charged but in reality far far lower. I had to "baby" the bootloader a bit: when it got the 4th cell raised, I held down power for 10 seconds to get it passed (maybe) the 5th one. That way no 2nd reboot is needed, as it can continue charging from bootloader but needed that restart to re-enable the power button for start-up after the 5th cell. Quirky SoB. But wait, if I tried to start it up there, it would begin to boot Windows Mobile up to the 2nd or 3rd dots 7-8 line, and freeze. I discovered when these devices were most volnerable was during the "unzip nk.bin" stage: during this time, no power is drawn from USB, and instead it is taken from battery. This was less the case on older Windows Mobile, but I think because of how CE 6.X unpacks, where nk.bin is unzipped into ram and there's this long load, yeah. That can really bite you on devices with built-in batteries. In the end, it was a dance of boot, freezes, hold down power for 10 seconds, waits mins, charges again from where it left off. At about 70% I could finally start up Windows mobile so voltages remained high enough for the unzip. Wow. Well, that was an interesting lesson into Windows mobile mechanics, sheesh.

@danestange oh thanks. I'm not sure. The Activator is a really good series for 2025 especially if you're on iOS, you can really get a blended experience with it. But it lacks a lot of features built-in like DAISY playback too, since it's so new. The Brailliants remain competitive and still in the market, which is good. Hims made their new display they're aggressively pushing, the E-motion, to me it feels like an excuse for them to move away from BrailleSense, and the pricing of it all doesn't impress me. The new BTBraille is one I'm waiting on the reviews for, especially as it's competitive at least with note-taker pricing and gives you a bit more cells than the Hims BrailleSense does. I probably wouldn't get it myself right now since I have the BTSpeak, but that and the Brailliant are getting the most updates and attention. If someone goes Hims it should probably be Q-Braille XL, but that one has a QWERTY keyboard which isn't everyone's cup of tea either. Thanks though, hope you have a great day yourself!
I thought they are still being serviced/made even though the software is around 10 years old by now. Luckily my battery is still ok but waiting for something like this to happen to my unit.
@andrew oooh yeah, I don't know. The new VisioBraille might still service them yes. Mine did get the newer mainboard right before the Baum shuttering, and I used it for about a year reliably with it, when in 2021 I got the newer Bi 40X. It was such a sad departure: The Vario is still way lighter, thinner, and the only thing to ding it for maybe are how cheap those laptop-style keys do feel compared to a quality display. I missed the PDF / Excel viewers, and the NaviStick - as much as Vario did run on Windows CE which died right about the same time it released in 2015, it was able to do surprisingly a lot with it.
ok ifixit has one disaasembled. From what I can see, it uses a lithium ion 14500 battery with what looks like a JST-XH connector. The batteries I find with this connector seem tp have the positive and negative wires back to front. So I could point you in the direction of a replacement, but you would need someone with electronics knowledge to verify the polarity, and possibly de-pin and swap the wires on the replacement connector. Do you know someone confident to do this?
@latelesley oooh really wait they did a teardown whaat? No way. That's a huge help knowing the battery type though. I think I could take it to a local battery / computer repair place and ask them to swap it in, if I have the parts and instructions they can do the labor and I pay them the $60-100 for a better job than I could do. @latelesley oooh, super-Vario. Interesting. I wonder how this model differed from Vario-Ultra, perhaps a bit earlier I'd think (Ultra was 2015 or so.) Still worth a shot to see if there's any compatibility though. If I figure out how to find the right screwdriver that takes it apart I might be able to get pictures of the battery inside so at least someone with technical eyes can verify if that battery is the same one or different. So that may be forthcoming as a weekend project xD

Note to C developers: run a test coverage report on your code. If your test suite doesn't cover the code you care about, then the run-time sanitizers like ASAN won't be able to detect errors there. Static analysis can only go so far.

I finally managed to narrow down the problem I'm having with Delta Chat to likely being that some part of the Chatmail stack doesn't like inbound messages from my provider, since I was able to communicate okay with a remote user on a third-party server, but E2EE setup with every single remote party on a Chatmail relay fails with a bounce message about No DKIM signature.
Meanwhile, trying to contact the same users on an account I set up on a Chatmail relay works fine.
I've currently got a ticket open with my email provider to look into this and see if we can shake any more info out before creating an issue with Chatmail and/or @delta
This sounds like two separate problems: 1. chatmail relays don't like *unencrypted* inbound emails, and 2. other chatmail relays reject your message because your DKIM DNS record isn't set correctly. But hard to say definitely without knowing the exact situation...

This is unfortunately a drawback of the fediverse. Any protocol where multiple servers can become part of the network and there's no central authority over the authenticity of a profile will have this issue.
There are ways to somewhat mitigate this issue, however, for example by linking to a site on your profile that has a link back to your profile with the rel="me" tag added. It is not perfect, but I imagine buying domains would be painful for someone who wants to impersonate lots of accounts.

Here's a fun idea for a hack-utility that could work: To get the Brailliant BI 40X series to play regular Mp3 audio, just convert a folder of audio files in with a book wrapper, so that the player thinks it has chapters but those are just pointers to the track data for each audio file. Would be neat if something like that worked, since clearly the playback capability exists, it's just that you're not allowed to use it for standard audio playback.
