Wednesday's episode of the @doubletap podcast featured an excellent interview with @glenrgordon58 following Glen's resignation from Vispero. This brought back so many good memories! I first met Glen at the very first European dealer workshop in the Black Forest in Germany in July 1996. We connected immediately over the fact that we're both computer nerds. I had got my first JAWS licence four months earlier and was already heads down into the scripting language, which back then was still called macro language. It was a fantastic couple of days, in which I volunteered to head up the macro beginner group and helped them create their first macros in JAWS. Later, this got me my job at the European distributor, which started an eleven year tenure at Freedom Scientific and me influencing Braille support in JAWS, helping design the Focus line of Braille displys, and others. One anecdote which I also still remember was the time in March of 1999 when Eloquence suddenly stopped working all across Europe for JAWS users, including me. That led to me sending an email to Glen on a Sunday morning, which I uusually would not do. Debugging the problem led to a hot fix that Glen sent me later that day and which I then distributed via email to the dealer network the next day. If you're interested, the problem had to do with Europe and the U.S. moving to daylight savings at different times, Europe last Sunday in March, and the U.S. and Canada, back then, on the first Sunday in April. BUT most collaborations Glen and I had were much more fun than that. Anyway, I encourage you to listen to this episode of Doubletap, and while you're at it, subscribe to the podcast if you haven't already. I chuckled when you said Eloquence stopped working across Europe in 1999, because myself and several others ran into this exact problem while using Eloquence 3.x with NVDA back in early 2016. I believe the time based license check was removed in Eloquence version 4.x, and it definitely wasn't used in 5.0 or greater. Interestingly, the API function for requesting a license was still exported by the core Eloquence DLL, possibly to avoid breaking any code that called that particular function.
I distinctly remember the timezone issue on that Sunday morning. JAWS stopped working all across Europe because the Eloquence rules for when daylight savings time ended in Europe didn't match reality. This meant that authorization failed. Not sure how we resolved it, but somehow we did.
When the dust settles over #chatcontrol and the EU commission's desire to drive a #digitalomnibus through our basic human rights, and it is clear that Tuta can still offer properly private email services then I will start subscribing.
I don't see much point in me getting used to a service if it ceases to be free of state interference in a couple of years time.
In the meantime, keep up the good work!
I will do my best to help defeat both EU proposals.

we set up a bot that archives all nixpkgs issues and PRs regularly at some point because GitHub regularly deletes valuable contributions from people in sanctioned countries without notice. It's a fucking pain in the ass.
@jelu Moving is not that easy sadly, and I already am short on time to maintain my projects, I don't want to add even more tasks to the todo list.
I can say however that I'm very glad that the IzzyOnDroid team standardized on Codeberg so more and more of my time is spent on Codeberg instead, which is great :)

yes, we are engaging in various cryptographic hardenings currently, and will post about it around release times. But #chatcontrol raises quite different massive challenges, especially in combination with the #appcontrol that Google and Apple are normalizing, which in turn Russia, the EU, China and the US are happy to enforce and to tap into.
For sure. The above will only be helpful if the apps are still available and able to be downloaded on users' devices, but that's a legal rather than technical problem at that point.

Almost 2 months on #PixelWatch and I have to say that I'm unhappy about the fact that there are almost no 3rd-party apps for the watch existing, and the Google apps are almost useless. The Fitbit integration is basically all I use, and checking the time of course. Seeing the weather or vibrating the time is useful, but I hoped for way more use cases honestly. For example listening to a podcast or YouTube in bed, at least some way to control my Tidal... TBF: sideloading APKs is fucking cool, I have got Eloquence on there, and should probably do it with more apps, but idk it's not been the burner for me considering the price. Now looking at the app store where many apps have at least some small Apple Watch apps... Well well, it is how it is right, who knows what's going to come. Also at least we had WhatsApp first. And it's quite useful.

What? I am not a fan of WhatsApp, I use signal, but if such a law bans minors from WhatsApp and pushes all end-to-end-crypted messangers out of europe that would mean that no citizen under 18 is allowed to use a messanger service? Because all alternatives are even more dangerous than WhatsApp and would fall under the same ban.
weren't state threat actors always a part of the model? There's been a lot of careful thought into making sure it keeps working for people under hostile governments, and this has largely been successful.
e.g., Russia sued, DeltaChat fought, refused to put in a backdoor to collect keys, so they said they'd block the messenger. That was around July? They've still been unable to execute that threat.
@feld can chatmail servers be hosted as tor hidden services yet, bc imo if you have to register a domain name to run a chatmail server then the entire ecosystem is very vulnerable to state threat actors
@feld I've never heard of a government failing to block a domain could you explain more how that worked. Also tor traffic can be masked with I think something called snowflake
agreed about the Snowflake and other traffic obfuscation methods, but they require Tor nodes that run that specific modified version of the software and very few do (and also breaks compatibility with normal Tor IIRC). Plus the ones that exist must not be published on the internet so they don't get blocked directly either.
So now you can theoretically access Tor, but only if someone shares with you a private server to use... preferably by word of mouth to not leave a digital trail of its identity
the pluggable transports are for the client to be able to enter into the Tor network from the clearnet and not be detected by DPI, right? But you can't just publish the list of these special Tor nodes or else they can just be blocked by IP
@feld isnt the point of hidden services that even if an adversary has the address the owner is still anonymous. Surely with pluggable transports there is no way for a state to block access to a hidden service
@feld ok I think I learned something that tor obfuscates the identity of hidden services but not of nodes, so nodes can be blocked directly denying entrance to the entire tor network?
yeah that's correct. They use the public list of entrance nodes (Guard and Bridge IIRC) and just block those, then nobody can get in unless they know of a hidden Bridge, better if it has that Snowflake obfuscation capability

makes sense. And well, for situations like Russia I'm sure they are getting close to being pissed off enough at the West to just block all of Azure and deal with the fallout. So that thing only works as long as countries aren't willing to cut themselves off from large chunks of the Western internet I guess

@venelles You can already use your own mail server. On the first screen click "Create new profile", then "Use other server" and then "Classic email login". There you can enter email address and password of an email account to use it for sending and receiving chat messages. We recommend using a separate inbox (email address) for chatting and not the same that you use for "slow" email, but otherwise using your own mail server is fully supported.
you'll miss out on push notifications working via Apple/Google because your mail server won't have the script that sends the notification when emails arrive and in the future your server won't support the TURN/STUN required for voice/video calls, but otherwise it will work with your own mail server that isn't a Chatmail server

I did something similar for a Distro and changed all occurrences of 1000^x to 1024^x. But also changed the suffixes from KB, MB, GB, ... to proper IEC 80000-13 units (KiB, MiB, GiB).

@BorrisInABox I shut the laptop down, took the battery out (yes this thing actually has an easily removable battery), drained the capacitors, put the battery back in, rebooted and it hasn't happened again.
@BorrisInABox Its not the laptop battery we're talking about but the clock battery on the motherboard. Its almost certainly that battery that was gone. In my case if the machine was powered off for more than an hour it would cause the BIOS to reset. Luckily on most modern systems its only the clock that's impacted.
@andrew Yep. Depending on the laptop, it could be a matter of seconds with no power before the clock is lost, regardless of the state of the main battery.

Leider können wir uns nicht darauf verlassen, daher würd ich vor dem Teilen immer einen kurzen Blick in die Bildbeschreibung werfen.
Klar gibt's unterschiedliche Vorlieben bezüglich Länge und Detailgrad einer Bildbeschreibung, aber eine Bildbeschreibung zu fälschen und nur ein Wort reinzuschreiben, ist einfach nicht ok.
As it is still dark these days when I ride to work I noticed how many car drivers are just watching instagram while driving. Not only while waiting for traffic light or in a jam. While actually moving on the street. Not passively, but they are actively swiping for next videos and stories. Not only some bolt drivers, but also dads and mums having kids on back seats. The phone is shining and it's clearly visible through rear window. It's just addiction as any other - dangerous.
In the standard libc API set there are multiple functions provided that do ASCII numbers to integer conversions. They are handy and easy to use, but also error-prone and quite lenient in what they accept and silently just swallow.
