It is so funny when people claim Linux authority by saying, “I’ve been using Linux since the 2000s…”
Sit down. My first distro was Slackware on a 200Mhz Pentium MMX. And back then, window managers were the hotness, not desktop environments. Back in my day, we fiddled with Xeyes in IceWM—and we liked it.
But none of that vintage cred actually matters, because Linux never wins people over with nostalgia. It wins people over when it finally does the thing they care about.
I abandoned Linux in the early 2010s for the same reason most people did: it didn’t have the apps or the games I needed. The OS was fine. The software ecosystem wasn’t.
What brought me back? Gaming. Not philosophy, not ideology, not a love of fiddling with config files.
Gaming forced Linux to solve real, modern problems—drivers, performance, Vulkan, translation layers, graphics pipelines. And once those problems got solved, the benefits spilled into everything else: creative apps, productivity apps, niche tools, Windows compatibility layers that actually work.
This is what people still don’t get: regular users don’t care about Wayland vs Xorg, package formats, compositor drama, or kernel minutiae. They care about whether the apps they need will run with minimal friction.
An operating system succeeds when it disappears into the background and lets people use their software. For the first time, Linux is genuinely doing that—and that’s why the momentum is finally real.

I thought it could be interesting even for the international audience, so I translated it into English and published it on my English blog.

When the dust settles over #chatcontrol and the EU commission's desire to drive a #digitalomnibus through our basic human rights, and it is clear that Tuta can still offer properly private email services then I will start subscribing.
I don't see much point in me getting used to a service if it ceases to be free of state interference in a couple of years time.
In the meantime, keep up the good work!
I will do my best to help defeat both EU proposals.

GitHub has deleted an issue I was working on *again*.
Beyond frustrating.
I would just abandon that self-destructing-vibe mess.
I've had a notification that I can't remove for months now, because they "hid" it due to being a spam.
They said I could mark it read via it's API but I never bothered since I've left GitHub. You might wanna try to dump the issues via the API.
@jelu Moving is not that easy sadly, and I already am short on time to maintain my projects, I don't want to add even more tasks to the todo list.
I can say however that I'm very glad that the IzzyOnDroid team standardized on Codeberg so more and more of my time is spent on Codeberg instead, which is great :)

@delta : With #ChatControl as a very possible future here in the #EU, do you have any updates on implementation of:
- on-device #encryption against #ClientSideScanning
- #PerfectForwardSecrecy
- #PostQuantumEncryption
If not, what can the community do to help you with these three points?
Each of these are so critically important for secure messaging apps.
Thank you for all your work!

Denmark and other EU governments still pursue #chatcontrol.
They still want to permanently legalize client-side scanning but postponed making it mandatory.
They also want to increase age-verification controls which risk to ruin what little is left of privacy in current digital spaces, taken hostage already by US corps.
Ourselves? We double down on providing the most private, reliable and fun messaging experience, with a growing federating #chatmail relay network across the globe.

I just submitted a talk for the Geospatial room at #FOSDEM. It's about #OSM. Do you think this would be interesting for the audience?

It started as a simple idea — teaching colleagues how to use OpenStreetMap. A few sessions later, more than a hundred people had learned not just how to map, but why it matters.pretalx.fosdem.org
#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:
A tiny human (2?) has spotted Mum's cake on a cafe table.
Ahh...
Mum is distracted talking to a friend.
Hmm...
If he just climbs on this chair...
And then onto the table,
And then SITS on the cake...
She'll never notice, right?
(She notices.)
A woman (60s?) pulls over and offers a lift to an international student walking down her quiet inner city street.
It's bucketing with rain and he at first looks confused and then accepts gratefully.
They zoom off down the hill into town, safe and dry.
A young human (8?) has spotted a shopping trolley parked in a no parking zone.
This is clearly NOT correct.
Scowling, he marches forward and stomps it back to the trolley return before rejoining Mum with a vindicated air.
Not all carpark heroes wear capes.
A tiny human (1?) is sitting on Mum's knee while Mum talks to friends.
Tiny Human is watching the faces around her intently, mirroring their expressions.
First a frown.
Then a smile.
Then a BIG chortle when everyone laughs.
She's getting the hang of this!
A wiry man (60s?) in a plaid shirt, jeans and work boots is waiting in line for coffee, talking on his phone. He says: "Ya right love? Flat tire? Yeah. I'll be there in a minute. I'll get ya a coffee and'll come sort it out. Don't you worry. Love ya."
He hangs up and orders two coffees to go.
