Warning about the new thunderbird email app update, 102.7.0. If you are connecting to MS exchange servers, you may have pain. It changed App Name (see bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.… ) & now some exchange servers don't recognize it & "require approval." So because I've bookmarked Google Maps search box with the keyword "maps" if I want to locate tamworth uk I just type "maps tamworth uk" into the browser’s address bar. While the EFF debunks the "public wifi is dangeous" myth, I login to a company's guest wifi with a tiny little bit of paper (which I have to photograph and zoom in to be able to read the password) to then get a network connection which supports TCP/443 only. (Yes, girls and boys, neither SSH nor mail submission or any other of those pesky protocols)
If you follow security on the Internet, you may have seen articles warning you to “beware of public Wi-Fi networks" in cafes, airports, hotels, and other public places.
At least if the company is not in the middle of nowhere, there is very likely a decent 4G/5G coverage with open internet access and usually even faster. With today's data plans most of these guest networks make very little sense.
I've asked it in a poll in 8/2021 at Mastodon.technology, now it's time for a refresher: To improve #security I finally consider to really drop support for #TLS 1.0/1.1 (see blog.qualys.com/product-tech/2… and e.g. ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.ht…). This basically would affect devices running Android < 4.4. As I do not want to lock anybody out, I'd like to see how many of you would this effect.

@stevelord This has nothing to do with APKs, it's about my websites. And some of those are on topics around Android, visited by many folks with mobile devices.
TLS 1.0/1.1 have been deprecated around 2018. TLS 1.1 was implemented with Android 4.4.2. Older devices don't support it out-of-the-box, but app developers can integrate a library for that.
So the question is really just about 1) website visitors and 2) access to my F-Droid repo from Android devices. Not about the APKs provided there.
@samsy well, Kitkat was released when? 10/2013. That 1% must be using something before that, i.e. JellyBean (4.3: 7/2013) or older. Those devices are at least 10 years old and haven't seen any security updates in ages. They should better not be connected to the Internet any more at all (no blaming).
I have one such device still in use here, but just as a night stand (a 2010 Motorola Milestone 2, thanks to CM running Kitkat). Don't use that for network stuff, just clock & alarm.

@iameru It's just about my servers. I do not have the powers to remove it "everywhere". But I want to provide the best security I can manage – so removing of deprecated old TLS versions is one thing on my todo list, yes. Ideally without locking anyone out.
@iameru In a way yes. With the difference that that's no security issue. And honestly: humans can remember their home network addresses all start with e.g. 192.168.1. and their router probably has the 1 (and their main PC the 2) appended – but did you even remember a single IPv6 address?

@radasbona Ja, so eins ist bei mir auch noch im Einsatz, komplett offline, nur als eBook-Readr. Bestückung via USB – das sollte auch für Filme funktionieren. Mein ältestes Gerät ist von 2010, hat aber Dank CyanogenMod noch Android 4.4 bekommen. Die Tabbis mit 4.1/4.2 habe ich eigentlich so gut wie nie im Einsatz, mein "Lesebuch" hat Android 5.1.

For years #PDF viewers on #Linux such as #Evince couldn't save characters outside the basic charsets in PDF forms. It turned out to be a complex problem and multi-year effort, but it's finally done and you can use unicode in PDF forms. First available in #Fedora 37 where we've already backported it.

Accessibility on social networks like Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok hasn’t fully caught up, and the results can sound ridiculous. Automatic alt text based on machine learning doesn’t quite cut it.

Estoy mirándola todavía. Fuera del contexto de las AAPP que solo nos afecta a los funcionarios, conviene tener el cuenta que se aplica también a las entidades críticas definidas en el anexo de la Directiva (UE) 2022/2057, y en el apartado 8 vienen toda una serie de servicios informáticos: centros de datos, proveedores de nube, de confianza, de DNS, registros de nombres de dominios, etc etc.
Entre las cosas interesantes que he visto hasta ahora, definición de cuasiincidente: podría haber pasado algo malo, pero no llegó a pasar. También se regula una base de datos europea de vulnerabilidades, y equipos de respuesta a incidentes de seguridad informática en cada Estado miembro. También se crea EU-Cyclone, como red de cooperación para respuesta a ciberincidentes.
Lo más interesante son las obligaciones de notificación, a los equipos de respuesta y a los usuarios finales potencialmente afectados. Además habrá que hacer informes de análisis tras resolver los incidentes.
Eso sí, todo esto no entra en vigor hasta que lo traspongan los Estados miembros.
