One year ago today, a handful of people in London saw an immigration raid happening in their neighbourhood and intervened by blocking the "snatch van" intended to use to spirit away their neighbours. Soon it seemed like everyone in Peckham was out standing with them, surrounding the would-be kidnapperss and their police escort. After a tense stand off, the kidnappers and coppers backed down and were unceremoniously run out of the neighbourhood!

OMG, Jacqueline Carey is releasing a book from Joscelin's perspective. It's called Cassiel's Servant. I have no idea if it will be any good, but I'm assuming I'm not the only fan here. I learnt about it from Amazon but it seems she does have a blog too.

Did you know that #GNOME #mobile is on the @PrototypeFund project list?

Tumblr reminded me that Miss Piggy and Kermit meeting Luke Skywalker and Yoda on the set of Empire Strikes Back is a real thing that happened.

"Frank Oz who voiced Yoda, was also known as a puppeteer and actor who was responsible for the voices of Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Sam and Animal in Jim Henson’s The Muppet Show. [...] One day, during a break in filming Oz and Henson, brought Kermit and Miss Piggy on set to meet Kershner, Skywalker and Yoda."

Theme of the day for June 11th: Small Moments. A little bit of music box, a simple and melancholic melody which I really enjoy for once. I might make something off it in the future. youtube.com/shorts/PUO0l4ShTB0…

Realty check: The company fantasising about running a Groningen to Paris high-speed train has to cancel their regular regional services to provide the extra capacity for a festival – no #CrossBorderRail trains between Heerlen and Aachen today and then from Thursday to Monday next week.

In the Dutch information system, this is published as engineering works, but they forgot to tell the Germans.

Bicycles are the future of sustainable living

EVs of all types are already displacing 1.5 million barrels per day of oil usage, equivalent to about 3% of total road fuel demand. Electric bicycles make up 1 million of those barrels. Yet, bicycles get 1% the hype coverage electric cars get. Why? Who advertises in the media? Car companies? Bicycle companies? You can make batteries for over 200 bicycles from one large SUV battery.

#Audiomo
So, we have an often odd family. #Audiomo day 11 is only one example of this. In 2019, Marc had a thing. Every time we went shopping, we had to stop at the chickens, You know, the rubber squeaky ones? And he'd squeak all of them. We went shopping a lot that year. This is from October 2019 when @Tammy, Kat, Marc and I were at Walmart. This is, oddly, not the only squeaky chicken file you'll hear this month. Lol. I recorded this on my Pixel 2.

Day 1: Trending hashtags

Mastodon servers can report information about the hashtags that are trending, and #Tusky now shows this information for you. It's accessible from the left-hand navigation menu, and you can also add it as a dedicated tab.

I've attached a screenshot so you can see what it's like.

The work was done by @knossos in github.com/tuskyapp/Tusky/pull…

And while I'm here, in day 8's post (mastodon.social/@nikclayton/11…) I discussed the new #Tusky feature that shows what's changed in posts that have been edited. I should also have credited @nasser, who provided valuable feedback while that feature was being developed, confirming that it worked correctly for text written in right-to-left script.

Day 8: See what's changed in edited posts

In #Tusky v22.0 you can now see what's changed when a post has been edited. Deleted text is shown with a red background and struck through, while new text is shown in bold with a green background.

This is a great example of the collaborative nature of open source. I did the initial work in github.com/tuskyapp/Tusky/pull…, using DiffX, a third-party library that computes text differences (github.com/pageseeder/diffx).

Day 11: Show post statistics in the timeline

#Tusky 22.0 can now show the number of replies, boosts, and favourites posts have on the main timeline.

Previously this information was only available if you tapped on the post.

This is off by default, and enabled with "Preferences > Show post statistics in timeline".

Grigorii Ioffe (github.com/zikasak) did this and made their first contribution to Tusky, in github.com/tuskyapp/Tusky/pull…

Just brought up #Lemmy for the first time, and immediately found an accessibility bug. In general, Lemmy seems to get many things right, but in a non-English UI version of the web front-end, the global HTML lang attribute is still set to English, causing my screen reader to read German words with an English synthesizer, which sounds quite gibberish. I filed an issue and hope they can address it soon: github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-ui/i…
in reply to Marco Zehe

I've heard a good deal about Lemmy on the various subreddits that are protesting the API changes. Sadly, I've mostly heard rather unenthusiastic comments. It's tiny, the few active areas are all communist extremists who love what Russia is doing, that kind of thing. I hope Lemmy has its own Mastodon moment, where Mastodon was small for years before suddenly exploding in popularity.
in reply to Alex Hall

@alexhall Yeah, I am finding this out as well. And the main author himself seems to be a total right-wing fashist jerk. BTW: I do not even understand why all these communists find Russia so great, because what Putin does is anything but communist or socialist, but downright fashist as well. See this thread for some background on the author: raddle.me/f/lobby/155371/warni…
