"Neanderthal tools might look relatively simple, but new research shows that Homo neanderthalensis devised a method of generating a glue derived from birch tar to hold them together about 200,000 years ago—and it was tough. This ancient superglue made bone and stone adhere to wood, was waterproof, and didn’t decompose. The tar was also used a hundred thousand years before modern humans came up with anything synthetic."

Remember those unwarranted warnings about juice jacking in airports from public phone charging kiosks at airports and other venues? The misinfo isn't just repeated by the FCC and other government agencies. Security snake oil companies like Osomprivacy (osomprivacy.com) also do it. This email promoting the completely unnecessary "privacy cable" even cites an article I wrote 2 months ago explaining why juice jacking is BS. When I pointed out to him that he was spreading misinfo, he only doubled down. I will be staying as far away from Osomprivacy as possible.

> (Also note that by this definiton, nowadays tech stacks are so big, complex, and irritable that every project starts with a giant pile of someone else's tech debt on day 1. Enjoy!)

I see a backlash against this, at least in what people say on sites like Hacker News, if not in the decisions we actually make in our projects. For some of us, the ideal server-side web app is a single binary that can run on a single server using SQLite, and will likely never need to scale beyond that.

If any of you want a copy of an older version of TWBlue which still works with Twitter for me and a couple others, you can go here. This version doesn't support Mastodon though. dropbox.com/scl/fi/9tl9o2xizh8…

This is a PC app which was developed for blind users, but sighted people may be able to use it too. For TWBlue's website, follow this link. twblue.es/

During #pridemonth, as always, we stand with the queer community.

Many queer & trans people use Tutanota to protect their privacy. During #Pride2023 we can all show our flag as a sign of solidarity and support - which is important right now. 🏳️‍🌈

Tutanota is also built for (and by) trans people & we will continue to fight for our rights to non-discrimination, privacy and freedom! Trans rights are human rights!

Support your local queer organizations and happy #pride 🌈

Once upon a time, there was a community called Little Details on LiveJournal. It was a place where fiction writers of all kinds could ask for help with their fact-checking and research. It was a huge, amazing resource before the collapse of LiveJournal took it down.

I recently decided to try resurrecting it on Dreamwidth. It's now open and ready for questions. Come check it out, and boost if you're so inclined!

At around 11:30 PM on June 1, 2011, my partner and I went to the 86th floor observatory of the Empire State Building. This is a (not particularly exciting) recording of us getting checked in and going from ground level to the 86th floor in an express elevator.
Once we got there, it was very windy, so that part of the recording is pretty useless, and not included here.
Recorded with an Olympus DM520 and Panasonic WM61 microphones.

Today, we have a #testimonial in Greek from Vagelis. While we don't have a translation of Vagelis’ testimonial, he sent us this message to accompany his recording:
“I am sending you this message, so that you can see how much NVDA helps me in my daily life. I recorded a windows voice recorder to show that NVDA is helping me.”
It means so much to us to have our users from around the world share their experiences with us.
Thank you Vagelis for sharing how NVDA helps you in your daily life! #NVDA

Jonny Greenwood says he had to “unlearn” elements of Western music theory during the making of new album Jarak Qaribak: “There’s times where you have to really step away and not impose what you think is a major or minor chord on something” musicradar.com/news/jonny-gree…

In the late afternoon hours of August 5, 2010, we had a pretty gnarley summer thunderstorm coming through in Greensboro, NC. That's all well and good, but what made this funnier was the ice cream truck driving up and down the street playing Christmas tunes while all this was going on. When it played Silent Night, I lost it, because, well, it was anything but that.
I recorded this with an Olympus DM520 and Audio Technica AT-822 hanging out of a bathroom window.

#AudioMo: I was going to #Hamleys with my wife and children on Jan 13 2019 when the road was literally inundated with motorbikes. We'd just left the underground station and were walking toward the shop. The noise here is amazing, and I'm glad I was able to capture it.

TOTO's guitarist said in an interview: "I've played Eddie Van Halen's guitars, Jeff Beck's guitars, and I sound like me."

Great instruments and gear help, that's without a doubt. But in the end great tone and technique are in your fingers.

Hi everyone! Can anyone who depends on a screen reader read this for me and tell me if it works? I'm making a tutorial on how to make a Roguelike for my blind accessible game engine, so just wanna make sure it's in a good format! It will have informational and instructional content split up to hopefully make it easier for screen readers to find what is needed. Download .txt sample file here!

I have spent a few weeks rebuilding my blog (blog.zarfhome.com/) in a static site generator. Current draft is at devblog.zarfhome.com/ .

Look good? Anything obviously broken? Is the RSS okay?

(This is a temporary subdomain, obviously. When I go live with this it will replace the current blog.zarfhome.com. Old URLs should still work.)

For added security, turn on Screen Lock by storing your password in the Tutanota app. Then go to Settings > Login and choose your Unlock method. When Screen Lock is enabled, you’ll be required to open Tutanota similar to how you would unlock your phone – by entering your PIN, password, Touch ID, or Face ID.

Happy encrypting. 🔒

@FreakyFwoof see if you can change yours by just flicking down on it, and taking it to 0, then back out, and go back in and see if yours stays or if you have to do like I do and doubletap and hold, then slide to the left. you don't get sounds you are sliding it, nore do you hear a new percentage letting you know you are down to 0 percent or any percent for that matter.
in reply to Andre Louis

@FreakyFwoof @simon I really think it is a samsung issue this time as like I said in the audio file on the pixel 5 you double tap on where it says "brightness X%" and then you flick up or down to put it where you want. after you set it where you want, you just press the back button, and it will tell you what the brightness is in percentage, and you see it actually takes when you set it without having to doubletap and slide to the left or to the right.
in reply to Andre Louis

@FreakyFwoof Have I ever said thanks for indirectly recommending the S10E? It is a very nice phone. I suspect you'll like the Zenfone as its successor if the S10E becomes unusable and you still want Android. It's .1 inches larger and the only nice feature it's missing is an SD card slot. But somehow running an old version of Android doesn't seem as bad as running an old iOS, and this one works well, for now.
in reply to simon.old

@simon I love the thing. I think when it released it was ahead of it's time, just even now the formfactor is perfect, the functionality is all there. NFC, decent enough cameras, headphone jack, Micro SD, lesser speakers than modern iPhones but still you can hear stuff if you need to, I personally like the mics in it way better than my 13 pro when recording in stereo for example. What's not to like?
in reply to simon.old

@simon I'm using HiPixel audio recorder. It's free with ads, or remove ads for not very much. I used it free since March of 22, but this year paid to remove ads because I like it. The interface has a few unlabeled buttons but easy enough to get around once you know what you're looking for. Can record in flac too, which is great for me. I use it for long recordings at gigs, outside, wherever. And of course it can do stereo.
in reply to Andre Louis

Additionally (though Andre's suggestion is more cost effective), SonicPresence® mics are also a good choice:

Although unlike the Ambeos, the SP Mics go outside your ear instead of inside.

Tech Specs and audio demos on the SP15C (for 150 USD), can be found here:

sonicpresence.com/products/sp1…
Would I buy them over the Ambeos which I bought for $50 USD though?
Considering said USBC to lightning adapter went down in price (link below), I myself would not bother, unless someone didn't have the Ambeos at the start.

Ah. Well, for $219 USD, that's a good price!

Thanks for the find! Never heard of those till now honestly:
