"The majority of ALL book bans in the US were initiated by just 11 people…Book banning is NOT a movement…In most [states] it only takes a single complaint to have a strip a book from the library. Just one…Look at what is happening in St. James, FL where ONE person got twenty three books removed. Or in Clay County District schools where ONE person forced almost thirty books off shelves."

Axos calling Earth, Axos calling Earth... " Chilling out this evening watching Doctor Who The Claws of Axos (1971). Classic 70's Who at its best, and still one of my favourite 3rd Doctor & Jo Grant adventures featuring the Master and UNIT. #DoctorWho
in reply to David Goldfield

@DavidGoldfield That sounds great, it's a brilliant story. I really liked the 3rd Doctor stories that feature UNIT and the Master.
in reply to Paul Bowler

I do, as well, but since the Doctor was stuck on Earth and the Master was free to travel it amazed me how often the Master tried to do his thing on Earth where the Doctor would always defeat him. I guess it was the Master's way of just trying to continually agravate him.

Ugh, Mastodon’s rolling out a new meta tag for verifying links.

Now we can do:

  • reciprocal links
  • IndieWeb h-cards (can work with reciprocal links)
  • Semantic Web markup that maps to v-cards (can work with reciprocal links)
  • Ariadne proofs (Keyoxide) (works with many different account providers)
  • Fediverse-link-preview-specific identity verification but only for accounts approved by your instance admin.

xkcd 927: Standards

(Transcript on explain xkcd)

in reply to Seirdy

Can we please stop re-inventing webpage author verification with platform-specific metadata? We’ve got Twitter-specific, Facebook-specific, etc. markup for webpage verification and now we’ve got Fedi-specific verification.

make it stop

in reply to Seirdy

We have bidirectional mappings between webpages figured out. Stop figuring it out.
in reply to Seirdy

Servers already cache long lists of Fediverse domains and verified profile links. Going through a page’s rel-me links for link previews as well as profile links should be doable.

Relatedly, the Fediverse small-DDoS problem still needs solving and this just makes it more obvious. Including link previews in the post and verifying them after a much longer random delay (measured in minutes), first checking for previews from a list of preview-generating servers, would address most issues.

in reply to Seirdy

*makes misskey specific verification that's incompatible with mastodon specific verification*

Just after I post about fire risk increasing in northern Alberta & the NWT, I go to rest a bit in the other room, that has the window open, & notice a distinct smell of smoke. 😣

It looks like the worst of the smoke is going to pass north & east of Edmonton over the next few days (see forecast), but those forecasts are notoriously unreliable so I guess I'm back to checking AQ any time I go out or open a window.

Bad air just when it gets hot out. Great.

🗣️ 🔊 July 8th @ 8am PDT/5pm CET, we’re launching the Data Workers’ Inquiry: 15 data workers from 4 continents answer their own research questions in their chosen modality, ranging from comprehensive reports, to animated shorts, documentaries, zines, comic books, podcasts & more. I’ll moderate a panel with founders of the 1st African content moderators union, & @DAIR's Krystal Kauffman, lead organizer of @turkopticon.
Register @ data-workers.org/events/ where you’ll find the speakers’ series🧵 1/x
in reply to Timnit Gebru (she/her)

We'll highlight each researcher throughout the week but I'll start with two.

Fasica Gebrekidan worked as a content moderator for Meta via Sama in Nairobi, Kenya for 2 years, until she was laid off for attempting to form a data workers’ union. Her heartbreaking report is on the unimaginable toll of both experiencing #TigrayGenocide AND moderating content related to it. Imagine. She discusses mental health issues and drug abuse.

You can download her report at data-workers.org/fasica/

Booting Linux off of Google Drive

On the brink of insanity, my tattered mind unable to comprehend the twisted interplay of millennia of arcane programmer-time and the ragged screech of madness, I reached into the Mass and steeled myself to the ground lest I be pulled in, and found my magnum opus.

NEW: Hackers say they stole 33 million cell phone numbers of users of two-factor app Authy.

Twilio (owner of Authy) confirmed that "threat actors were able to identify" phone numbers, but didn't say how many.

While having a list of phone numbers on its own may seem like not a big deal, the risk is that now hackers can better tailor phishing attacks against Authy users.

I think when I was growing up (not too long ago.. 30 years ago?) in Singapore / Malaysia, our former colonial masters the UK still seemed like an aspirational place to study in, work in, move to, live in. After all, so many of our relatives did.

Now? I have such a deep aversion to it. Even though I had a good run in London very briefly in the 00s.

Good morning everybody! Did any of you suno users get the big announcement? Well, just yesterday, it was announced that Suno is now an app in the ios App Store. It seems to be pretty accessible from a blind perspective, but I think it could use some work. Unfortunately it’s only in the US for now, but I hear it’s going to have a global release pretty soon. Nothing definite on that yet, but I’ll keep you guys up-to-date on that if I can. Oh, and for android users, it will be coming to your app store soon. For the IOS users in the USA, Here is the link.
apps.apple.com/us/app/suno-mak…
Once you have signed in with your email and password or your preferred service, you may have to close the app and reopen it to see your songs. Sometimes the app doesn't refresh unless you close and open the app.
Anyway, enjoy and let me know what you think. I must warn you, it was only released yesterday, so, it will probably be a little buggy.

@cachondo Yeah exactly what I was thinking. A tiny linux console only pc for on the go, which is better than having a laptop imo because laptops are annoying with their battery life, with their fans that make it annoyingly difficult to clean them. It's not meant to be used everywhere, requires an actual power outlet... But still.

Hopefully they don't sell it for too high price.
