Why is it that audio drama is still very much alive on the BBC but it's mostly dead here in the States. I'm not counting OTR channels and audio theater made for the Internet but there's hardly any modern radio drama in this country anymore. Is it that it's less about making money on the BBC?

@Bruce_Toews @Thumper1964 Oh, like wow!!! Found "My Toboggan"
That is just super funny! Brilliant! Well-written and very wholesome.
Nice work.
Did it ever make the Funny Five?

Is it just me or does every actor in a CBC audio drama sound like ... well, a CBC radio announcer?
in reply to David Goldfield

Speaking of #CBC I wonder if there’s any archived audio of Lauren Green as a newsreader? I’d pay money for that.

in reply to Kevin LaRose He/Him

@Thumper1964 No need to pay me money. If you ever meet me in person I'll settle for a fudge brownie. That'll do quite nicely.

@Thumper1964 Lorne Green also hosted the Monday evening edition of Sears Radio Theater when they did, no surprise, westerns.

@Peiress @Thumper1964 Don't feel badly, most of the radio dramas, as well as comedies, came out before my time, as well. My dad got me into them when I was ten and I've been into them ever since. I was a bit too young when Zero Hour came out but I loved Radio Mystery Theater in the '70s, as well as all of the other dramas that came out around that time; Alien Worlds, the Star Wars dramas and a bunch of others. There was also some OTR being played on some local radio stations in Philly.

OK Mastodon mates, just to let you know that soon I am moving this account to my own instance. I am grateful to the admins and owners of this one and have no complaints at all. It has just been on my list of things to do to make my own instance with a domain that reflects me and my personality. I’m super thrilled with the domain I have chosen for myself.
I wasn’t prepared to do it if I was left with 500 characters though. I mean dude! How can I do the usual Mosen waffle with only 500 characters? It would be untenable! , but now I’ve found a host that will set my character limit to what ever I like. Oh boy! Watch out world.
If I follow you now, you’ll just be advised that I’m following you from the new thing, once I do the move thing, a bit later today.
Bye.

TIL that sharks (a group of fish) are an order of magnitude older than Polaris (literally a star)

Sharks: 419 - 359 million years

Polaris (α UMi Aa): 45 - 67 million years

I’ll need to sit down, stare at a wall for a bit, and process this.

Top marks to Brazil’s Supreme Court for shutting down X with immediate effect. It’s about time an elected government and its judiciary reminded the likes of Musk who is in charge. I hope it stays off for a while as it will be an interesting experiment in how many people rediscover a life somewhere other than online. How many will drift away and not return? It will be particularly interesting to watch what Brazil’s commentariat does. Does it make it easier for everyone to switch?

the other day i was round at my dad's trying to get his internet connection fixed and the guy that was booked to come round just didn't show up. eventually we called them up and the customer service person said "he's written on the note here that he's not comfortable paying the parking fee for his van" so he just drove away because there was no free parking nearby. and like. what is going on. do BT not reimburse their engineers. are they just franchisees?? why has everything got to be like this

I'm really enjoying #FairEmail app on my phone. It have been the smoothest SMTP/IMAP experience I've had on any operating system. Even Thunderbird is not as smooth and as customizable. I've been actively using it for some months now, and frankly, I'm impressed. The UI design takes few hours to get used to, but after that and with some personalization, it would look as trivial as an email client can get.

It is #OpenSource (GPLv3) btw:

AI deepfakes will make trusted computing and solutions that were previously only relevant for DRM a lot more important.

Open source advocates will not be happy about this.

Does anyone know what's up with this? For a few days now, every time I click on a link to a YouTube video, YT has already seeked to somewhere in the middle. If I hit Play, it starts there instead of the beginning.
in reply to Federico Mena Quintero

youtube remembers your timestamp in the video (if the video is over a certain length, I think). useful if you actually were watching it and paused (I rely on that part semi-regularly); less useful if you didn’t actually watch it 🙄
in reply to Lucas Werkmeister

@LucasWerkmeister ... remember if I had actually watched a video? With my ADHD? These people ask too much of me 😝

Whenever people ask "why can't Black people in America create vibrant commuities?" the answer is: they did. Multiple times. Those communities were just systematically wiped out by white supremacists. In the late 19th - early 20th century by racist mobs with the support of the Democrats. In the post-WWII era by racist urban planners with the support of the Republicans.

I'm writing a talk for an internal event about gracefully sunsetting your #opensource work.

If you have ever yeeted a project into the sun, ghosted anything you've built online, or been toasted for your splendid transition of a technical challenge to a new solution, I'd love to hear from you.

What have you learned about successfully ending work that you would want me to share (with accreditation)?

in reply to Federico Mena Quintero

Finally, be gracious to yourself. Sometimes someone else picks up the project even though you had given up on it, and does a good job - you may even become a happy user or just be able to accept that it was not a lost cause after all (without any obligation on your part to return to it).
in reply to Federico Mena Quintero

I think @brainwane will have a lot more to say about this, about planned sunsetting / transfer of maintainership.

Social Security Administration Announces New Efforts to Simplify SSI Applications

The SSA announced a large step in a multi-year effort to simplify processes for people who are applying for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) by starting to offer an online, streamlined application for some applicants starting in December. SSI provides monthly payments to people with disabilities and older adults who have little or no income and resources.

Mě chodí do Hubzilly automaticky všechno, takže to vidím. A pak nechápavě kroutím hlavou, proč se zase ptají, když už tam odpověď je...
in reply to Martin Kostera

@martin

OK, you want to know how to change a dropdown chip in Google Docs? I just randomly figured out.
1. Highlight the dropdown chip with your cursor. It should only take up one space.
2. Do a shift+right arrow to select the dropdown chip.
3. Now, Google will tell you the options and you can arrow down to change it.

[Podobnie działa to w innych dziedzinach życia 🤫]

in reply to Jakub 'unknow' Mrugalski

Coś typu Substack, Ghost, Buttondown i inne usługi typu SaaS. Też trzeba się tym martwić?
in reply to Mikołaj Hołysz

in reply to Mikołaj Hołysz

I keep meaning to write about what management problems we are actually trying to solve and why misnomers like "full-stack" keep leading us astray. There is a genuine problem here. But trying to ask every individual engineer to stretch across the entirety of today's complex stacks is just not a viable solution. Or even a reasonable one.

I think we lionize the solo developer who can bring a complete software product from concept to release all by themself. I've done that, multiple times, but I'm also aware that in the areas where I don't have expertise, the quality of my work wasn't great, just good enough and possibly not even that.

Body: "I need the bathroom."
Me: "Okay, I'll get up in just a couple minutes an go."
(*insert image of Quin flying through 5 different Linux screens doing all sorts of things for the next 45 minutes*)
Body: "Um, okay. Bro. I really, really need to take care of this now."
Me: "Okay, fine. I'll just sit here for a couple more minutes and finish this."
And...I didn't get up until my body made it very clear that I had no choice in the matter. I do this with eating too, and you'd think I'd learn not to do this to myself after a while.

And then when you really, really need to go, you hear the bathroom door snapping shut and then realize that somebody just went in to take a long shover.

i think anybody building things to improve safety in one social network should try others that are building safety features so i’m gonna try bsky soon.

i know i know calm down im not leaving lol. i just might be using POSSE more.

oh and trying another network to understand it better has to be good-faith/serious so i won’t just be sightseeing. i’ll be syndicating my top-level posts to both but organically interacting, following, etc. from there just like i do here.

but i don’t expect to spend more time on bsky than here.
