I go to download an iso from download.opensuse.org in order to test something, and it gives me a 302 and redirects me to mirror.tspu.ru. I presume it sent me to a mirror at random. I feel like this shouldn't happen--I am nowhere near Russia, and, of course, the download is taking forever.

Zoom just continues to impress in the worst way with their desktop screen reader #accessibility. Here's the label for a button at the top of the calendar view on Windows. no, this is not copied speech. This is the actual label of an actual button. There is no ARIA on that button except for the label. Are you sitting down? Okay, here goes: "Select Calendar Date, Combo box, Today, Oct 8 collapsed, October 8, 2025". Again. That is the *label* of a button according to NVDA. I copied that text directly off the page. So, given that we've just been told this is a collapsed combo box, and Zoom considered this information so important that they put it in the label when they couldn't figure out how to use ARIA or semantic HTML correctly, which of the following statements do you think are true? A. If I press the arrow keys in focus mode, the date will adjust. B. If I press alt+down arrow, the combo box should open so I can pick a date without refreshing the page. C. None of the above. Yeah, it's C. This isn't a combo box at all. It's a button which pops up a standard calendar view. No combo boxes in there either, and the buttons use the words "Selected" or "Not selected" at the *end* of their labels, and the escape key won't close it. What kind of person calls something a combo box when it doesn't have one single bit of resemblance to a combo box? The same kind of person that can figure out how to put an ARIA label on a button but can't figure out how to use roles, states, and expanded properties, I suppose? Congratulations, Zoom. you make over a billion dollars per quarter and managed to hire a web accessibility guy who did everythin wrong and nothing right.

Well, time for another #fedidreams! Last night I dreamed that I'd gotten Nintendo's latest console attachment: a jockstrap. Then I played the latest best-seller game, called "kick ball". The jockstrap attachment would sense your leg movements, to detect when you had kicked a player in the balls. Then it would squeeze the players balls based on the strength of the kick. The rules to kick balls were: two players join, standing across from each other. Then they kick one another in the balls until someone surrenders. After I won several games, I discovered that Nintendo had a public leaderboard of players who won the largest number of kick balls games. But they captioned it "Ladies, avoid these guys. They're stupid and their dicks won't work." I think I woke up from sheer embarrassment at that point.

By now you know that Microsoft is now defaulting to saving new Word documents directly to OneDrive. I guess Excel will be the next inline. The cynical take is that this is incredibly convenient for them, especially if they plan on using that data to train future LLMs. Imagine paying for software only to have your data automatically funneled into their cloud. Plus, what happens when you're offline and need those files? Just use the LibreOffice and just say no to all Microsoft products.

We’re not living in our new house until mid-November, giving us time to make modifications and get things moved in. But already, we have great security, and the ability to issue keys to the house that live in Apple Wallet. It’s incredibly configurable. For example, if we have a cleaner who agrees to visit on a Wednesday from 1 to 3 PM, we can issue them a key that only works during those hours, then revoke the key entirely if needed. Talk about living the dream. For those in MD, I’m working with a company called Project IOT. It’s a small family company and Patrick, the guy who owns it, is enjoying the challenge of geek maximization alongside #accessibility maximization. And we’ve only just begun this journey. We have a clear pathway mapped out and an understanding of how to get there.
@jcsteh Working on it … As Windows annoyingly keeps saying. I'm struggling to find anything in Android quite like Apple Keys. iOS is so dominant in this country that it's not a huge deal, but we can also issue unique physical codes for the keypad with the same parameters.
Ah nice. And I assume the key pad is physical buttons, not capacitive touch? I heard about a key pad that was capacitive touch recently and it had been placed outdoors... so it was unusable in the rain. Sooo ridiculous.
@jcsteh Sadly I simply can't find one that isn't touch. Bonnie and I have physical keys, but it's ridiculous, and something I'll pursue in my NFB capacity because it impacts all blind people.

I’m pleased to see Vispero talking up skim reading in JAWS. People don’t often talk about it but it’s a powerful feature. Perhaps a little less relevant in a world of AI summaries, but still very powerful. For example, if you work somewhere that produces lists where activities for your department are highlighted in a certain color, you can set up a skim reading rule to present only those tasks to you.
I miss this sort of flexibility in NVDA. There's an addon that comes close to a some points but the speech and sounds manager, inconsistency checker and skim reading features of JAWS do put it into a category of its own for proofreading.

One of the changes in this release should result in Google Messages RCS working for users receiving a verification error caused by Play Store checking for an emulator with an easy to bypass check. It was already working for many users without this but this should get it working for everyone else.

All of the Android 16 security patches from the current November 2025, December 2025 and January 2026 Android Security Bulletins are included in the 2025100901 security preview release. List of additional fixed CVEs:
CVE-2025-48595 was fixed in the regular GrapheneOS 2025100300 release and is no longer listed.
CVE-2025-48611 patch was retracted.
2025100901 provides at least the full 2025-11-01 patch level and the Android 2025-11-05 patch level (Pixel Update Bulletin could have fixes we don't get early) but will remain marked as providing 2025-10-05.

Android now discloses patches around 3 months prior to their inclusion in a bulletin requiring them to raise the Android security patch level. However, OEMs are allowed to ship the patches as soon as they're receive. We're doing this in our security preview release, but with the full set of patches.
Our initial security preview release on September 25th with the November/December patches included 1 Critical severity patch and 54 High severity patches, which is the full subset applicable to Android 16. In the past couple days, 5 patches applicable to Android 16 were added and 1 was retracted.
December 2025 patches from the past couple days have been included and the January 2026 preview is now available.
Our next release coming today provides a choice to use our security preview releases in the initial setup wizard with a notification for existing users. Opting into it is recommended.

If you, like me, are being constantly subscribed to substacks without your consent, you can go to this link and turn on the setting called "Require email verification when subscribing". Presumably, this will stop unwanted subscriptions altogether. There is also a button to "Unsubscribe from all publications and emails", which might be useful if you're not staying on top of your unsubscribe links and you don't willingly subscribe to anything on that site. I've been added to several email lists which are paid memberships with free article previews, so my e-mail gets flooded with posts I can't actually read in full without paying. The paywalled email spam is clearly an attempt to draw more users in, so even if the posts themselves look legit, this is quite a shady practice. Adding email addresses without the user's consent is a violation of Substack terms of service, but I haven't figured out how to report profiles for doing this. The site is mostly accessible but has enough unlabeled buttons that i'm probably just missing it. Reddit threads suggest Substack isn't known for doing anything about it, and (at risk of spitballing a bit) I imagine Substack keeps a percentage of what their writers earn, so it makes business sense to continue allowing these unwanted mass-imports until they get in trouble for it.
