Are women not people? what a hideous, awful, absolutely impossible… I lack for words, except for curses. Many and many inventions in technology are made by women. To quote only one example, closest to me: I'm a blind developer, and I use text-to-speech every day. Before 1998 (or so, I might be off by one or two years, it might have been 1996 or 1997) every single blind person who needed a Windows screen reader and wanted to use JAWS had to buy a super expensive hardware speech synthesizer, prices ranked from $1000 and up. In 1998 (or nearly, as I said), JAWS 3.2 appeared, containing Eloquence, a high quality, super fast software synthesizer used by many still today and even on various platforms nowadays, including iOS and Android. You guessed it already, who is the inventor and developer of Eloquence. Dr. Susan Hertz. and it's only one absolutely revolutionary thing that made PCs available for lots and lots of blind people.

Das tut mir sehr leid! Ich hatte das Vergnügen, ihn 2003 mal in Wien kennenzulernen, auf einer Veranstaltung zu Braille, Mathematiksoftware und anderen dazu in Bezug stehenden Themen. Er hat mich mit seinem Wissen und seinem Humor beim Vermitteln von Inhalten beeindruckt.
@marcozehe Ja, das kann ich mir gut vorstellen (ein großer Pädagoge). Wir hatten seit acht Jahren sehr viel Kontakt, kennengelernt habe ich ihn 2005 beim gemeinsamen Singen (Projektchor von www.blindenwerk.de).
Das tut mir leid. Ich hab ihn nur einmal getroffen auf einem Treffen der ISCB und fand ihn beeindruckend. Er hatte damals ein Fairphone, das war 2016, als Android mit Screenreader noch anstrengend war. Glaube auch, das konnte nur Android 4, das damals schon nicht mehr aktuell war. Er hatte das aus Überzeugung, das fand ich großartig. Über Schach haben wir auch geredet.
@SunDial79 Ja, er war bis zuletzt bekennender Android-Nutzer (ich überlege übrigens derzeit, ob ich's auch werde). Vor ein paar Wochen sprachen wir über aktuelle Braille-Notetaker-Entwicklungen (BT Speak, b.note). Letztes Jahr in Frankfurt, spät abends nach einer BSKDL-Tagungseinheit, haben wir Blitzschach gespielt; ich war kein allzu schwerer Gegner für ihn, aber viel Spaß hatten wir beide.

Ok this is kinda random and weird but do any of my blind friends on here have any experience using Tracker software? That is, the old music apps people used to use back in the 90s to program music with samples. I know there's modern equivalents, but not sure if any of them are accessible.
@pitermach I got pretty good with ModEdit for DOS back in the 90's and early 2000's yeah. Still have all the old mod files I wrote back then. Haven't messed with OpenMPT properly.
@FreakyFwoof @pitermach It's clunky beyond belief but I think tracking as a blind person is just always like that? It's like a blown up QWS event list. Sample editor dialog is still inaccessible though.

Quick PSA, Kontakt8.8 has just been released, with accessibility improvements. I haven't tested yet, and it looks like NI is mainly using macOS for development, so not sure how it will behave on Windows, but here's a link to the release notes: community.native-instruments.c…
This thread provides information about upcoming patches for Kontakt. It will be updated whenever new information becomes available. The currently available software version is 8.8.0. Please make sure that your installation is up to date.
Yo, thanks for the info. I've been testing this just now for a bit with a free piano that I installed some months ago ish, which I couldn't access even with a lot of messing around with helping tools, now I can. There are some unlabeled buttons here and there but at least the most important is there, which is great. In ableton I have to use the nvda cursor though, since the arrow keys don't do much and tabbing, well, you might know. Gets you right out of the plugin window again.
@McOi Oh that's really great to here. Just out of interest, which piano was it? I'll probably be busy for the next few days so I won't be able to test it right now, but really excited to have something to look forward to.
It was this one called hammersmith free. Now I should be off to looking for more pianos and things like that. I'm kinda excited about this now hahaha. Any recommendations?
@McOi Ah I've heard of that one before, really nice. So I'm not too sure about other free pianos, although I'm sure there's more out there, but NI themselves have quite the piano collection. They're all on a 50% discount right now, so I'd pick up the Definitive Piano Collection if I were you. It's got three pianos, two grands and an upright. All of them sound pretty nice. They're slightly older libraries, but I think they still hold up and actually have more detail than some other stuff out there.
Such as my sunday keys one for instance haha, probably at least. Hm, do they have a special site where they have a download library thing or something of sorts?
@McOi Well since you're using the Kontakt Player, you're a little Limited in the libraries you can get as they have to be specially created for that version. There are a lot more free options if you have the full version of Kontakt, however if you try and use a library that's not licensed for Player, it will run for 15 minutes at a time, after which you just have to reload the plug-in. Here are links to the Pianos I talked about above, along with Noire, another much newer library. Noire is a little cheaper at the moment, only $74 US right now.
I mean, isn't contact player the thing that is used? Or is there another contact8 just without the player that's accessible as well but not free? Asking some stupid questions here but yeh.
@McOi No it's totally ok I know it can be confusing. You're exactly right, there are two versions. There's the Player, which is free, then there's a full version, which is paid.
Is that on a discount too right now, /why should I buy it in that case? Is that gonna open up a whole new lib with more free stuff? I mean considering that most pianos are paid, paying for contact then too will make my bank account cry after a while if you know what I mean. Probably have to do this over time and carefully choose what I actually want to buy/have.
@McOi Yeah that's a good way of going about it. I don't think you should worry about getting the paid version of Kontakt now, all NI products will work just fine with Player, and there are many third-party libraries that also work with it. I'd say focus on just getting the sounds you need, don't do what I did and buy their huge Komplete bundle until you have a good idea of what kinds of music you're going to make or start doing this fulltime. Go ahead and also grab Komplete start if you haven't already, comes with tons of sounds and effect plug-ins for free.
Will do. Well right now I'm listening to some demo tracks right now on the first pianos you sent me. There are 3 pianos but some variations, so I'd assume they have presets on the sounds? Or how would you go about adjusting more parameters? Btw, very offtopic, would you mind rechecking toh once more, that is, opening the file you've sent me to see if you have those new samples in there from the toms and your changes? Cuz I still had no success with them being changed lol.
@McOi Oh yeah from what I remember we didn't end up changing the toms, though I could be wrong. I'll have another look. Also yeah all of these libraries come with presets, though of course you can adjust many parameters although I'm not sure if that's exposed in the UI yet. If not yet, I imagine it will be soon.
We actually did lol, on our last meeting. These wern't 100% perfect but that was when you told me we shouldn't stress that much about it honestly and just get it out. You can also see it on the hits still being a bit weird in the bridge, you fixed those up. Even though I need to still change some vilocity myself.
Lol, seems I was late. I invested in another piano some days ago that I still need some help setting up, though I'll probably get that soon. Anyways, there's no discount anymore, or it's only 19 euros off apparently because there's that on some discount so I guess that's that lol. Are they gonna redo this at christmas? I really liked them but then went for another one that night, which maybe was silly as I have trubble installing it fully. But yeah, a good 200 bucks is a bit expensive for not knowing how smoothly it'll work out at the end.
@LeonianUniverse Yeah I'm curious to see what they've done, unfortunately my old NI Komplete Kontrol is no longer supported, but I have a ton of libraries that I'd love to be able to use again. Hope this is the start of good things to come here, it's long overdue, but I'm happy they're finally working on it.

Okay I'm a teacher, so let me break this down for you in the simplest terms possible.
Let's say I am teaching a math class. The subject is addition. I teach you how to add two numbers together to get a different number. Then I give you an addition assignment so you can try a few examples for yourself.
Student A writes "2+2=4". This is correct. Student A gets points both for having completed the assignment and for getting the answer correct.
Student B writes "2+2=5". This is incorrect. However, I can see that student B is trying to engage with the material. I can help student B understand their mistake and correct it for next time. I can mark the answer wrong and make curriculum notes.
Student C writes "2+2=-64,863,702". This is wildly incorrect, and the student will not receive points for completing the assignment. I can tell from this response that student C not only did not understand the material, but likely got frustrated and just wrote down any old number because they knew it was going to be wrong. I can still help student C. They're going to need a lot of assistance, but that's the job. I can mark the answer wrong and make curriculum notes, including suggestions for how to help the student engage more with the subject matter.
Student D writes "2+2=JESUS WANTS YOU TO DIE". This is obvious nonsense. It's not just that the answer is wildly incorrect. And it goes beyond the fact that the student did not complete the assignment. And it even goes beyond the fact that the student is not engaging with the subject material or my class. In addition to all that, they have also decided to insult me, make veiled death threats, and use religion as a pretext for it. Obviously I have to mark the answer wrong. But perhaps not as obviously, there isn't much I can do to help this student. They have chosen not to engage with the material, with me, or with the entire concept of learning in general. They looked at a math assignment and decided the best thing to do was insult and threaten the teacher. The best thing I can do for the rest of my classroom is pull this student out of class and try to place them in some form of therapy for whatever behavioral issues this student is clearly struggling with.
The Oklahoma U student who wrote the "essay" about her "demonic" trans science teacher is this last kind of student. She got the answers wrong. Very wrong. Her assertions were unsupported, uncited, and lacked scientific rigor. But beyond that, she just chose not to complete the assignment. The assignment was to write an academic argument about a particular scientific article. Instead of doing this, she chose to write a sermon. And if she had stopped there, she would have been in the same boat as Student C who decided that 2+2=-64,863,702. But she didn't. She decided to include in her sermon a number of insults and death threats, which were aimed directly at her instructor. And she did all this from a place of perceived religious superiority.
"TRANS PEOPLE SHOULD DIE GOD TOLD ME SO" is not an answer to 2+2.
She MORE than earned a zero on that essay. And if she had turned in that shit in my classroom she would have been taken off my roster and recommended to appropriate mental health services.

Are there any songs I can test the low-end response of AirPods? Ones that feature sounds around 20Hz? I tend not to listen to metal, rap, hiphop, or similar, which I'm guessing is where I'd find such things.
Good one, thanks. The low end is there, it's good, but it's not overpowering. The bass hit on the and of 2 when we're in the root chord is the deepest, I think, and it's good. Not ear-shaking, not thin. No complaints.

Nicméně je pravda, že mám kapku problém se zavíráním tabů. Mám jich kapku moc (cca 1200 ve dvou oknech) 😎
