I am profiling #GNOME Shell (MASSIVE thanks to #fedora enabling frame pointers for all packages in 38 making this possible) and noticed clock_gettime() taking up a huge chunk. Turns out I hit
bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.c…: many #AMD laptops are forced to use a very slow clock source (HPET instead of TSC). #Lenovo fixed it with a BIOS update for some laptops but not mine. :sadness: Kernel param tsc=reliable results in big speedups (up to 30% in browser benchmarks) but unsure if it impacts stability :/

I spent yesterday evening trying to see how to make apps that use #libadwaita (the latest UI for #GNOME), and walked away with a streak of anger over a surprising lack of documentation and examples.

#GTK and #GNOME app development have always been a quest that involves throwing a ring in a fiery mountain, while hoping for the best, but in the 25 years since GTK+'s introduction, it has only gotten worse, it just looks prettier now. sigh. #linux

Sometimes I find it very hard to know how to look for/describe #GNOME bugs. I could use some help with this one. It's a bug in #libadwaita as I can trigger it both in GNOME Files and GNOME Settings. I just have no clue how to describe it. I think searching on "dialog" might be too narrow of a search, and I also don't know what to give as extra info (platform, version...). I can't seem to find it in the gitlab repo, which surprises me as it's such a major regression...

@thelinuxEXP

I own a OP6T that is currently being used by my mum and it is running #LineageOS.

Should I claim it back and install #Linux on it?

Which is the best Linux mobile distro? How can I get the cleanest #GNOME experience?

Finally got around implementing #swift demangling support for #GNOME Sysprof (Not upstream (yet?))

The power of FLOSS, a feature you really want is missing? - Just add it

The initial batch of @gnome 44.alpha release is out!

As usual and the name implies, beware dragons.

It's with great pleasure to announce that the CfP for Linux App Summit is open! Please consider submitting a talk - it will be in person in Brno - April 21-23, 2023 - linuxappsummit.org/cfp/
hosted by both GNOME and KDE projects. It's the perfect mix of the application stack from the kernel to the toolkit to third party developers !

A new version of Weather O'Clock, a #GNOME Shell #extension that puts #weather inside the pill next to the clock, has been released

This version is the completion of what I wanted this extension to be. One day I would like to see something likes this upstreamed.

Repository: github.com/CleoMenezesJr/weath…

Get it on GNOME Extensions: extensions.gnome.org/extension…

Thanks, the link is interesting (if a bit confusing). What i was missing was the 'share' button was not asking for an internet-like share, but was asking permission to send the screenshot to another app.

I can probably work with this (though the page implies once you share it once, you shouldn't have to do it again, at least with a current version of Gnome - am i misisng something?)

I guess one of the drawbacks of getting back into "Lets run Linux as a primary desktop" is realizing that yeah, the linux community is STILL full of egos that don't like being told what they should and should not do, no matter what the impact on the users.

Case in point gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-s…

Short version: Gnome maintainers allow their own screenshot tool to run without restriction, but block all others.

Great fun.

Hm, why is gnome-calculator calling imf.org? 🤔

Dear #Gnome in which reality ist THIS a minimize button?

I'm willing to pay up to $10,000 (USD), to whomever I need to pay, to solve the #GNOME AT keyboard input handling problem once and for all. Currently, toolkits implementing AT-SPI have to pass all keyboard events to the AT-SPI registry, then wait for a response on whether the event should be processed as usual. No other platform does something like this, and this unique platform-specific requirement is a major complication for #AccessKit. I want to get this fixed. #accessibility

One reason I worked on these docs is that I'd like to attempt a virtual hackfest this weekend. It would be fun to get together and add some functionality to the game. If you’re interested at all in word games and free software and would like to attend, let me know! Even if its just to work on a crossword, all are welcome.

[ Also, if you've had success running a virtual hackfest also let me know. I'd love to hear about practical tips for running one of these. ]

Feedback wanted! I'm making a map style using #GNOME color palette and design guidelines. You can preview it at maps.jwestman.net.

In particular, I'd like to know if it
- looks nice,
- is easy to read,
- emphasizes places/roads/etc. appropriately for their actual importance
