I use mattermost as a free, open source Slack replacement. I like it a lot. I also use authentik as my SSO provider for my #homelab / #selfhosted stuff.
If you don't pay for the enterprise version of Mattermost, you don't get the SSO features. You can fake that by using their free GitLab integration. But you also don't get the capability to switch users from one form of authentication (email/password) to SSO after you set it up.
This is pretty obscure, and it involves a bunch of raw Postgres queries. But I figured it out and wrote a blog on converting Mattermost users from email/password to SSO
If you start your Mattermost Team Edition using email and password for users, but then you change your mind and switch to GitLab authentication, it’s not at all obvious or easy how to convert the existing users.blog.paco.to

Everyone is now realizing that WhatsApp is evolving towards its latest form (archive.md/L3W74). If you value secure messaging, you may want to check out @signalapp or @matrix (wich is #federated). EPFL also has its own Matrix instance at matrix.epfl.ch (use @element as a client).

First steps in the BSD world!
1) OpenBSD on VPS (Amsterdam)
2) FreeBSD on Raspberry Pi 4 (home)
I'm running a Wireguard connection between the two.
Next step is setting up relayd on the VPS to point at services on the Raspberry Pi server.
Several weeks ago I started to monitor my #selfhosted services with #prometheus. Two weeks ago I set alarms to notify me about possible problems. And today I made updates and buckups so I used alert silencers for the first time. It's so straitforward. I love it.
Next huge task I am plannig is to migrate it all from docker to kubernetes.
if I where to setup a new @matrix@mastodon.matrix.org which server software is nicer to work with?
Synapse Or Conduit?
synapse seemingly has the pro in terms of support for tools such as synapse admin: github.com/Awesome-Technologie…
and the ability to use oauth and handle user management using solutions such as authentik.
while conduit seems to be more resource efficient and better in terms of speed?

Some of the reasons I chose @Tutanota and Coolify.

Extremely happy with both of them! Props to the devs.
Here we go again About half a year ago I migrated my server. The tech stack was largely unchanged, but it was a tedious process to bring everything over. For a while I was happy. For a very little while.haris.razis.com
The thing about blogs: If it looks modern with a short URL and has tons of cookie popups and self-promo, stay away. If it looks like a plain HTML page with some basic CSS, found at a long URL at the bottom of your search result, it's probably trustworthy and written by a passionate self-hosting human being.
Basically, the more it looks like motherfuckingwebsite.com, the higher the quality of the material you're about to read.
I just migrated my personal #XMPP server based on #Prosody to its own #selfhosted server. I could not believe how easy it was, including transferring configuration, accounts, stored messages/files, etc.
BTW, the new server is just tiny, with 1GB of RAM, and it still seems to use only a fraction of it.
I suppose this is the result of dealing with an amazing protocol (XMPP) coupled with an excellent piece of technology (Prosody) 👏
lol
“ I actually work with and manage multiple Kubernetes, mission critical infrastructure that actually matters. I spend my entire day working with containerised applications, and what do I find when I load up Reddit? Ansible playbook writing maniacs trying to automate their light switches. You are all a bunch of sick freaks who probably dream in YAML and wake up in cold sweats wondering if you forgot to enable that cron job”
