The thing about blogs: If it looks modern with a short URL and has tons of cookie popups and self-promo, stay away. If it looks like a plain HTML page with some basic CSS, found at a long URL at the bottom of your search result, it's probably trustworthy and written by a passionate self-hosting human being.

Basically, the more it looks like motherfuckingwebsite.com, the higher the quality of the material you're about to read.

Would you help a poor single-user Friendica server admin out and boost this post?

Boosting will increase the number of servers my server federates with.

Thanks!

EDIT: that is probably not exactly how it works, but it kinda depends on which of the myriad of ActivityPub servers is seeing the boost, and I haven't checked all of them on how they decide what to pull in. For sure, having someone follow an account on the friendica server will have that friendica server push updates to the server of the follower, but other than that? Who knows :)

Thanks for the overwhelming amount of boosts anyway, and thanks to those following :)

The end of an era. The move of our repo to a #selfhosted @forgejo is now completed, the #github repo has been archived!

This! Please release a self hostable version of your server code. This would be a massive win for the #selfhosted community.
@Seldon

I just migrated my personal #XMPP server based on #Prosody to its own #selfhosted server. I could not believe how easy it was, including transferring configuration, accounts, stored messages/files, etc.

BTW, the new server is just tiny, with 1GB of RAM, and it still seems to use only a fraction of it.

I suppose this is the result of dealing with an amazing protocol (XMPP) coupled with an excellent piece of technology (Prosody) 👏

Question about @matrix federation...

I currently have a split domain setup with #synapse where my username is amd:amd.im but my server is located at matrix.amd.im

I am going to stand up a new homeserver that uses a subdomain, but I don't whether the new amd:matrix.amd.im user will show up with a bunch of encryption key errors or be seen as a new user.

What subdomain would you pick for your new #selfhosted #matrix homeserver if you were me?

  • matrix.amd.im (42%, 3 votes)
  • mtrx.amd.im (14%, 1 vote)
  • chat.amd.im (42%, 3 votes)
  • conduit.amd.im (0%, 0 votes)

“ I actually work with and manage multiple Kubernetes, mission critical infrastructure that actually matters. I spend my entire day working with containerised applications, and what do I find when I load up Reddit? Ansible playbook writing maniacs trying to automate their light switches. You are all a bunch of sick freaks who probably dream in YAML and wake up in cold sweats wondering if you forgot to enable that cron job”

I'm still on the hunt for a good self-hosted link manager. #Goodlinks is okay, but only on IOS and mac, not windows. #linkwarden uses hover for, like, everything, making it almost completely inaccessible. #Hoarder has basically no labeled buttons or links. I want something that's #accessible, cross-platform, #selfhosted, will archive pages, and offers full-text search. Three quarters of the time when I use Google, I'm just searching for something I already know about. In an ideal world, a selfhosted link/bookmark manager would reduce my dependence on big-tech search engines. Maybe #archivebox? But that looks like it's more about storing the data than actually doing anything useful with it like search or tagging or whatever. #a11y

Even without ads or trackers there are plenty of web applications that sit at over 20MB. Take the #selfhosted application Nextcloud for example, without caching it would be impossible to reasonably use. And this is after they did a lot of optimizations recently.
