I just had whatever the opposite of 'future shock' is - I stumbled upon a telescope proposal from 2001 and I wondered if the #latex would compile - of course it did, and the proposal looked exactly as it should have.

In related news, I wrote my thesis in Word 98 and the next version refused to open one of my chapters for no obvious reason.

Plain text and openly documented image formats are definitely the way to future proof your work.... #astrodon #opensource #openscience #TeXLaTeX

Rust 1.67.1 fixes a regression for projects that link to thin archives (.a files that reference external .o objects). The new archive writer in 1.67.0 could not read thin archives as inputs, leading to the error "Unsupported archive identifier." The compiler now uses LLVM's archive writer again, until that format is supported in the new code.

The clippy style lint uninlined_format_args is temporarily downgraded to pedantic -- allowed by default.

I hit the Just Press Record widget on my watch face by mistake, and ended up making a like 9 hour recording of the day I flew here. Was just seeking through it, and found the part where I put my watch in my backpack, and it went through security. It actually sounds quite interesting.

Apple complains UK watchdog wants to make iOS a 'clone' of Android... The reason for its unhappiness? The UK Competition and Markets Authority's (CMA) key fix is to kill Apple's WebKit requirement on iOS amid claims it is anti-competitive.

This is objectively very funny.

Twitter is falling apart. I currently can’t follow anyone or post anything. In the midst of this, Musk had a meeting to find out why his engagement is plummeting.

An engineer looked into the code, found no issues, and speculated it’s because he’s less popular.

Musk fired him on the spot. 👶🏼

Nintendo’s CEO recently said “If we reduce the number of employees for better short-term financial results, employee morale will decrease” and is instead doing the opposite by raising pay to address inflation.

Some leaders are built different.

people keep expressing surprise that consumer reports wrote about memory safety.

First off, @yaelwrites is -great-

And second, this is a problem for consumers! Lots of consumers! Software and devices consumers rely on to keep their intimate and personal details safe have these problems!

Fellow #iOS #swift #swiftui developers. Do you know if the ButtonRole structure actually does anything purposeful? With #VoiceOver, I cannnot get any indication whatsoever about the button’s role, while at the AppleDeveloper documentation site: developer.apple.com/documentat…, they state that such an info should be conveyed. Is there any visual indication of the role? If so, what?

Since Button also functions a kind of labeled function to place in e.g. Menu or Swipe Actions, I there's a lot of surface area to check – that said, this kind of semantic tagging also pays off long term.

Do you find proposed WCAG 2.1 SC 2.4.11 Focus Appearance confusing? Alastair takes a stab at it:

It is a partial response to Eric’s ratings of WCAG 2.2 SCs:

in reply to Adrian Roselli, pH0

One WCAG 2.2 change that is mostly uncontroversial is the purging of SC 4.1.1 Parsing.

If you find it controversial, my post mapping 4.1.1 to other SCs might be helpful:

Reading the "how we built it" part of the article about Wildebeest (blog.cloudflare.com/welcome-to…) causes my eyes to glaze over.

It's basically just list of 100 different cloud services with dumb names and might as well be written in an alien language.

As an "old guy" this stuff really bugs me. This entire "app" is built of remote procedure calls. Every example function is just a bunch of async/await to something else.

I look at this and see "FRAGILE FRAGILE FRAGILE" in large blinking red letters.

in reply to Sean Heber

I think you misunderstand what async / await does in JS. If your function calls any asynchronous API, whether it’s reading files or talking to databases or sending HTTP requests, your function is itself declared asynchronous, and other functions must call it with await and become asynchronous themselves, and so on. So, if you’re calling a function that is calling a function that is calling a function that is accessing the database, you’re using await.
in reply to miki

also, for what it’s worth, I find Wildebeest way more understandable than the official Mastodon app. I’m pretty sure you could give it to a junior programmer with little Typescript or even JS experience, explain file based routing to them and they’d be somewhat productive within an hour. This is definitely not true about the official Mastodon app, or even alternatives like Pleroma

Hahha, this has freemium gaming written all over it! applevis.com/blog/candywriters…

every now & then I check in on what the state-of-the-art for (relatively) inexpensive android phones is.

it blows my mind that ₹10k (~112€) apparently now gets you an octa-core phone with 3-4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage...

and even ₹5k has moved from being featurephone space to Android with quad-core/2GB/32GB

Ukraine belongs to the European family.

President Zelenskyy's visit to Brussels reaffirms Ukraine's stern determination to make this bond stronger than ever.

Today, the courage and bravery of the Ukrainian people in fighting for the respect of our shared values have echoed at the heart of Europe.

Our support is unwavering.

So far, we have mobilised €67bn, and more is coming. We will step up sanctions and ensure Russia is held accountable for its aggression.

Long live Europe! Слава Україні!

Some of these talking points might be divisive. They might touch a nerve. But we believe in being transparent and open about both our past and our future.
