That will be really cool to listen to. I got my first copy of jaws, 3.70 in 2000. So, this will be a stroll down memory lane.

More thoughts on the STUN server fallback question:

· This is something other #XMPP Clients just do quietly without having a big debate about it¹

· I don't think users should configure this. Anyone who knows what a STUN server is will likely switch to a server offering one.

· Treat it like channel search. On first use (call, file transfer), ask once: Use our fallback STUN server? Yes/No.

¹: github.com/dino/dino/blob/v0.4…

#xmpp
in reply to Daniel Gultsch

Another thing to think about is that STUN servers being used in reflection attacks. Doesn't amplify a lot, unless you enable authentication(?!?). So encouraging all server operators to deploy more STUN servers isn't without its complications.

Still wish I knew how to modify Vocalizer Expressive V1 dictionaries to not say "Northern Mariana Islands" for "MP" when combined with a number in the string, if anyone has ideas, hit me up.
in reply to Tamas G

Is that on PC or smart phone? I can't seem to get that sort of behaviour here with JAWS and the Daniel voice.
in reply to Martin from Toronto

@mcourcel weirdly you need a string which has less than 6 digits in the first set of digits but 6 digits in the second. like:
MP 99316/170106

I've just scanned through the Main Menu podcast of yesterday where they were talking about JAWS, and in particular, the ideas that came out of the Next Big Thing contest.

I've been around this industry for about 30 years now and so it takes a lot to cause some excitement, and I've got to say, I didn't think personally that the ideas were that exciting, but that's just me. But keep reading because I'm going to be positive at the end.
Let me sketch out the ideas that were in the top 3.
1. To have some additions to the Settings Centre so that various JAWS settings could be applied in different situations. The way this was sketched out in the podcast wasn't that clear, but presumably it would mean that specific settings could be applied for various applications and situations. That can vary enormously from one person to another.
2. To have specific codes or key words one could use between assistant and the person being helped in relation to JAWS Tandem. I think there are far more fundamental things which need to be done with Tandem before that is thought about to make it a viable proposition for regular use these days.
3. The winner. If you receive an application with what one might call an allegedly inaccessible button or control, using a combination of OCR and AI technology, JAWS could find that and click it. Now presumably, although again it wasn't clear, the user could interrogate it so as to identify what it was that he or she wanted to click.

So there you have it.
But in passing, Jeff Bishop, one of the podcast hosts, made some remarks relating to FSCompanion.
He wondered if it would be a good idea to have it so that, if desired, one instruction could be given at a time. The user could then hear the first instruction, carry it out, and then hear the next one. Now that is an idea which should have won the contest. That is well thought out.
I'd go a bit further. You should be able to work through the instructions with global keystrokes so you could carry out the activity and step through the instructions at the same time as working within the chosen environment.
That would be a tremendous training aid. I'm almost tempted to steal that idea because I think it's so good.

I thought a lot about a context aware training tool for students when I was at the college. based on the window title and potentially even the current control, guided help or very context sensetive information about hotkeys and prior tasks learned could have been provided.

Never had the time to develop it, of course. They'd not have paid me for it in any event, and the numbers didn't really scale for mass-production.

Third time I see a train’s position stuck at exactly 23 kph in Nieuw Vennep – when it is actually about to arrive at Science Park. Wonder what causes that.
in reply to Martin Hoffmann

I think they have some timezone issues, possibly since 27 October.

If you open treinradar and click on a train on the map, it will show you a timetable of a train that was passing that place 2 hours earlier.

Let's hope they will fix it before it gets automatically fixed at the end of March. 😉

in reply to Jakob Rosin

@jakobrosin There's a VST plugin called codec that lets you run the audio through I'm guessing the opus encoder in realtime. Just run your mic through that, then slowly start to decrease the bandwidth and increase the packet loss slider and then people won't even question your supposedly shitty internet :)

Alright, someone please help out a lost me. I just bought factorio, installed the mod, but it's not reading anything, it shows user login when I OCR the window, but no tutorials or mod scenarios. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. Thanks. #Factorio #Gaming #AccessibleGaming.

Yeah, except I had to grab all the mods from the mods folder and copy them that way, but now it says this, even though I have the latest version from the repo.

That's telling you that you have downloaded version 2, which is the new release. I don't think that's accessible yet. You'll need to grab the older version 1 of Factorio
in reply to Richie

It can't be that old though, it tells me to create a map... What in the world of a mess is this...
in reply to Richie

I've been at this for 3 hours and a game shouldn't be so hard to fix, right? This is awful.
in reply to Winter blue tardis🇧🇬🇭🇺

You downloaded version 2, which has an entirely different gameplay.

Download version 1 and it'll work fine

in reply to Richie

YEs, I downloaded it, and it tells me to create a map when I start a new game. Wow this is messed up.
in reply to Winter blue tardis🇧🇬🇭🇺

I've not played it in a few months. They have a friendly support system on their Discord. I highly recommend that
in reply to Richie

I am not well with comms. I dislike discord. I don't have it on windows. I just don't get which contents I need to paste into the data folder, because there are folders in the folders. This is confusing. :(
in reply to Winter blue tardis🇧🇬🇭🇺

You paste the contents of the unpacked mod, files and folders into the root folder of Factorio
in reply to Richie

Well, I did that, and it's factorio access folder with some settings files and a mods folder. Except, now I go to launcher, and it's not letting me start at all.
in reply to Winter blue tardis🇧🇬🇭🇺

I don't know why not. The only place I know of to get help is Discord.

Sorry I can't be more help

in reply to Richie

That's okay. I just don't use discord. Well, at least there is someone I can give the game to play it. :)

Hey y’all, how’s it going? Quick question for those on Bluesky: I just started trying it out this morning, and it’s pretty cool so far. Are there any third-party apps you’d recommend that are more accessible? The official app is good, but I’m curious about other options out there. Let me know!

I've been using Skeets and like it a lot. It works really well with VoiceOver and the developer's very receptive to accessibility feedback.

Dear @libreoffice ,
I believe it is time to change the default interface layout to a design that is much more intuitive, accessible, and easy to understand for those unfamiliar with LibreOffice.
I would like to suggest making the default interface layout “Contextual Single” when it is ready, if only for the sake of those using LibreOffice for the first time.
Thank you! :ablobcatheartsqueeze:

The thing with the court wanting Google to sell off Chrome and stop paying for search engine placement is that the latter is what fund Mozilla. Granted they have a hoard of cash, it's not a good news.

Also who would "buy" Chrome? Microsoft? That would be fucking ironic.

This entry was edited (3 days ago)
in reply to Hubert Figuière

Do they need to buy it? They can just take it and hire a few more developers. And maybe regretting abandoning their own engine. Or not.

TBF I don't expect much to happen.

Don't forget to join this years Matrix fridge event at FOSDEM! matrix.org/blog/2024/11/matrix…
You can meet cool people like... well, I don't know who confirmed they will be there yet, but last year lots of developers and users where there and it was lots of fun and there was some free food, which is the most important part for a fridge!

(Also, if you joined last year, remember: this year it is in a different location with likely more heat and better toilets!)

still keep thinking back to that post I boosted on fingerprinting within text fields (seirdy.one/notes/2024/11/20/yo…) - and how at work, I always copy and paste from either blank Notepad or VS code scratchpad-type docs I temporarily keep. Even if that's a Slack response, I'll still paste in from notepad and then apply formatting to parts of the text to my desires (or write out the markdown and re-do it after pasting.)
Not sure why I've always done it this way, part of it I know is control over where and how formatting is applied. (Thinking about how Slack turns ``` code blocks into something that screen readers don't announce the formatting for, as an example.) The other part is typing indicators, perhaps - I get conscious if people see this typing indicator, even though I know most likely nobody cares, but if something takes me longer to write thoughts out on, I want zero judgment possibilities. In Google Docs, unless I'm making edits or proofreading, I'd rather paste in chunks of text at once because if I end up re-writing something to sound more accurate, I don't want the inaccurate version of it revisioned. And these are just my own personal reasons for always copy-pasting. I suppose if my workplace claimed I was doing all my work by AI writing, it's not like my workflow there had changed before and after its usage. With how much they promote internal AI tools though for increasing our productivity, don't see that happening.

This feels weird to say because it should be obvious: Don’t download random #Conversations_im forks from the PlayStore!

I don’t know why people install apps with no website or source code. If you’re reading this, you’re likely not one of them—but server stats show they exist.

Yesterday, I warned one such fork about massive security issues and asked them to take it down. They refused.

in reply to Gonzalo Nemmi

@gnemmi @methuselah I guess this technically counts as having a website but there is hardly any information on there and all the source code links point to empty repositories...
in reply to Daniel Gultsch

absolutely .. there's no more information that what can already be found on the Play Store description .. or to put it simple: its just as good as nothing.

In all honesty, I believe that at it's core, the main problem is that there is no free "go to" full XMPP client for users to compare against, and it is almost unavoidable: new comers will not pay for an app to find out if they like/need/want to use a new service .. they'll only do it once they know what they are getting
