I enjoyed the t-shirts but like someone else said, after it became pretty obvious that a *ton* of people were abusing the system for free stuff and not actually being helpful, I pretty much lost all interest in participating since it was just a burden on project maintainers. was nice to have some external motivation to contribute to projects though.
Thankfully apparently not ever since they switched to projects having to opt *in* a couple years ago. The PR spam during this time before that rule change sucked hard.
I'm keeping my streak alive, but much less public about it after all the spammers hit in previous years. I also only participate on my own projects to avoid hitting maintainers with an added workload.
It was better when fewer people knew or cared about it. I think it really works best to get people new to open source contributions into it. These days I contribute what I can when I can and that is never based on it being October, but rather when my needs and skills and a project’s needs align briefly.

It's never about the language, its about finger pointing. This is not the first motor vehicle software failure. If you think it's about Quebec, it's happened twice in California as recently as 10 years ago.
Linux: Still hesitant to switch because Tuba, the Mastodon client, does not do notifications via sounds. So if something comes in, I could miss it. I could not find a mastodon client for Linux that also posts sound notifications. If anyone can, it'll speed up my switch.
@tardis yeah, it's just another website in-browser! LOL. It just bugs me how so many things are moving to web-app first. But it might be my best bet if nothing else is around so still a great tip.
Awwwww. I am sorry. I used to use toot for linux but it was because it was terminal, no notifications though. Using enafore because ain't paying 50 lv for mona and because enafore supports go to social and markdown text. I even use the web on windows, don't bother with the win clients developed because they don't have full support.
@tardis yeah and I think that's the major downside. Like, Windows clients, great and all for the invisible UI, but if something like quotes come to Mastodon as a valid supported feature, the web clients are more likely to support them first and adopt it before any of the Windows ones get an update for it.
It's not about quotes for me but fedi software support as a whole. None of them obviously would do markdown,which breaks posts when I post those. And filters. The filters not being supported sucks.
@tardis oh yes filters! True true. Tuba has those, which is super nice to see. But then again it's getting built as a Mastodon client for everyone. So maybe I'll stick with it but might need to miss notifications for new things when they come in since it has no sound. I'm considering just running a second watcher that grabs just the stream to play a sound for it, which is the great thing about Linux, you can make your life as complicated or easy as you'd like to, ha.
That's a good idea. I don't get toot notifications on iOS, so I just check from time to time. People should exercise buddhist patience if they want an answer. ;) But also, toot is minimalist, and I dislike complicated interfaces.

Pretty exciting news in the Zhang-Ports household: after 10 years, we’ve finally gotten a proper Chinese vent hood. The one that came with our house was decent for a white household but, as the guy at the Asian store says, white people don’t *really* cook. This one is finally acceptable because it has a stir-fry button.

1. Do not use one of those Site Builders to build your site. They are Ala Carte and by the time you're done you're paying more than you would for my services (and I'm bloody expensive). Get a real web person (not me) to do your site, and an actual Internet Engineer to do your business infrastructure like DNS and EMail (that's me).

Switching to Windows 7. That's right. I'm going back. I'm going to Run Windows 7 in a virtual machine under Linux, just as a multiuser target, no graphical. This way, I get to run Windows 7 on hardware that it couldn't normally run on, and also get to have it on the lowest-ram possible. I'm done with modern Windows, from now on, I'm going to browse sites using Windows 7 and latest available browsers.
@vol4life8657 lol I got sad that Windows 7 at boot only used like 700 MB ram, and Windows 10 is now (even without tools running) around 1.8 GB. So I probably won't do it, but wow to see that just in 6 years time we trippled our ram usage, unreal.
Oh I know. I don't know how much ram my linux distro on my desktop is taking up. The system has 8 GB and it seems to be running fine. I'm just sad to see windows 10 go, it was the best of the modern opperating systems.
@vol4life8657 well, I think the big split was really with Windows 8 and Metro apps, so then you were not only running the old-style programs but had to install and run this entirely new platform on top of it, like with new drawing and graphics code it used, all of it came along with the ride there, and then by the time got Win10 I think Microsoft was all in on that new Metro language, which they by then called a Universal Windos app. But by then they also began porting some parts of Windows like the security center and even the Start Menu Experience host, as straight-out apps that run inside that shell. Boom. Disaster was born.

it's a client for Youtube Music, but was last updated 2020. Still shows about 15 installs (downloads by F-Droid clients) per month here. We wonder if it still works, so we shall keep it – or not, and it should be removed. Feedback appreciated!

Alright so I know AI is so often being horribly misused, but I've lately been using it to read packages and get instructions from them that I wouldn't otherwise know. It's oddly very empowering not to have to cry to a sighty every time I have print I need read. I know, I know, it's not perfect, it's just a very good feeling to be able to do more of this stuff independently without having to enlist sighted help every 6 seconds.
I don't find it any more efficient than OCR much of the time. we use Seeing AI most of the time, but had Say Text back in 2010 on iOS, KNFB on Symbian in the noughties. Things have gotten much better across the board, but I don't feel that LLM's have significantly changed the way I access printed mail or food packaging, which are the 2 largest categories of print access I use day-to-day.
I still haven't solved my problem with @Libreoffice. Each time I try to open a document, there is a delay with a "waiting for printer" message appearing, which I have to cancel before the document will open. Looking online, it turns out it's been an issue for at least a couple of years. Something possible with printer or Windows settings? Can anyone walk me through a fix? (Pretty please) And yes, I updated LibreOffice.
