What we've learned from Agile, XP, etc., is that software development productivity comes from small iterations and tight inner loops. Write code, run it, observe behaviour, learn, adjust. This keeps feedback immediate and drives learning. 3/9

@criffer Christinas contribution sounds like, spec and code is just a shift of the same target, so let us start to ignore specs and just do coding... But not the whole team consist of developers that can code... But maybe I misunderstood her.
the idea is that in order to get AI agents to create good results, the specs need to be so thorough you might as well just right the code. With humans interpreting the specs, non devs can create them, user stories, BDD, etc.

Your "spec" must be as good & as exact as possible.
We - in my area - have iterations/sprints/feedback cycles in order to close gaps, clarify misunderstandings, learn, etc with the target to have the product that you want - interaction between e.g. PO and Dev. For me that is one aspect of agile, scrum - speak to each other.
How such a communication can be executed between POs and AI-tools I cannot comment - not my working mode.
I 100% agree. I’ve been trying to find a way to summarize it and “pyrric victory” is spot on. The issue I see is that the prospect of “no coding” is so enticing to the industry that no amount of issues will disuade them.
It reminds me of this beautiful story by Borges about carthographers who became so precise, they ended up making map of the size of the entire world, that ended up being useless and abandoned.
Good thread, and I agree except so far, there's no proof that there's time saved by using AI, the only study done that did have any scientific merit showed the opposite.
@ainmosni Thank you. I’ve seen that before; it’s sad that there’s no follow ups. The AI tool vendors claim that their tools improve extremely fast, thus, I am wondering whether the results change and if yes, how.
@stephan @ainmosni I'm actually pretty positive about LLMs and software engineering, when they are an interface that helps me code, so help with syntax, boilerplate, snippets, feedback, docs, etc. However I don't see autonomous Agents/Vibe coding is really viable for anything larger than a personal use tool, quick prototype/poc, or basic scaffolding for the reasons I've raised, and this can't be fixed by improving agents, because it's a consequence of reduced systemic learning that drives xp, agile, lean, etc. Which also means I'm much more excited about the smaller free models like Qwen Coder, as they are good enough for my use cases, so I see the real innovation being in small, specialized models and improved UX/DX.
I'm the opposite side of that, when I tried LLMs in coding, it just made my job worse and weird bugs kept sneaking in, of the type that would not happen if I wrote it myself. Also, code review of something that's inherently incapable of learning is a special kind of torture.
And if one ends up writing so much boilerplate, it's a code smell signalling that you need to move stuff to a library.
That said, my main problems with LLMs are ethical. Even if it did its job well, I would not use them because of all the externalities.
what are your ethical concerns with free, small, specialized models? I definitely understand the concerns around AI in general, including the ethical dimensions, but I'm quite happy to have simple conversational interface that does basic IDE type stuff, in part, because I'm a GUI hater, and so never liked loads of tool bars and buttons, but using a little conversational interface in my vim terminal buffer to grab a boilerplate k8s manifest, etc, is appealing.

I've been using LLM for a year now. For several months, night after night, solving compiler errors. I had to teach the LLM to only contemplate one error at a time. Separation of concerns. I cheeze a lot, letting the LLM write the commit msg
@tuban_muzuru getting the LLM to write the commit message is something I really appreciate. It's so much better than me, and writing good commit messages takes me out of my flow. LLMs work best with human-in-the-loop iterative approaches, the problems really start to show when rather than helping you code, you try to command them t code instead of you.
Deming would be concerned about LLMs lengthening the feedback loop, iterating on specs and verification rather than code, trying to get quality by adding inspection, trying to specify-in learning, etc, he would for sure be extremely wary of agents.
Early on with Bard, I had to quit hoarding bits of Rust functionality. If there are to be any "gains" by using an LLM, it's really useful to write a spec. Maybe two. Implementation then comes into focus.

As I just came out of a meeting with 16 people who use Apple devices daily and all assumed there's no undo, here's a tech* tip that a lot of people appear to need:
Undo on 🍎 iOs: Do a three-finger tap and you'll get a toolbar with undo, redo and copy functionality.
edit: yes you can also shake the device to undo. Apple is currently breaking that functionality. Anyhow, for an interesting experience try to shake your laptop and see what it does!
The other day, I accidentally managed to pay off a credit card in full... twice, which it shouldn't have even let me do in the first place. So now I'm trying to figure out how to reverse one of those transactions. Very exciting.
First, it correctly identifies that I made two payments a few minutes apart. GREAT! It then asks me which one of the two transactions to cancel. Doesn't matter, they're identical. It insists, so I'm like, OK, just cancel the last one.
It then tells me that a "pay later transaction" can't be canceled. When I pointed out that it wasn't one of those, it tells me to contact the credit card issuer.
Hey, yeah... so that's what I was trying to do when I got your useless bunch of bits.
I did something similar recently. I was trying to pay two credit cards. one I owed 10 bucks on, the other I owed 1500 or so. Except I paid them backwards. paid 10 bucks on the one I owed 1500 and paid $1500 on the one I owed 10 bucks.
