Ugh, the #chrome #extension ecosystem is exactly as bad as I'd expect.

And the fact extension is still up claiming not to collect any data even if it has been called out in one of the biggest security newsletters shows how much Google care about this (not much). The only thing they care about is pretending to ship AI features to detect malicious extensions. Because that's how you get promoted.

I mean is it even possible to report a suspicious or bad extension? I don't see anywhere

Great research by @WPalant and @c0m4r

And @campuscodi for putting the spotlight on it.

🤍 Appeal to the Browser Goddesses 🤍

Can we please make it a thing where 32GB of RAM isn't an insufficient amount for day to day web browser usage? Getting an OOM core dump for that reason is inexcusable.

- Should the Zoom browser app really need 2GB on a single tab when it's already downscaling a 1080p feed to 320p on an enterprise account?
- Should Amazon's website really need 1GB per tab just to view the cart or a ~800Mb for a single simple product page?
- Please remind me how an MKdocs fully static page with a single 400k image and no datatables or fancy JS somehow require 242Mb?
- Or perhaps shed some light on the requirement where Google's main page with a single search form somehow needs ~500Mb

There are no "good reasons" for these inefficiencies. We don't suddenly have better search fields or compressed jpegs now vs a decade ago with 1/10th of the system resources.

Question for any #Blind folks who regularly use the #Chrome web browser: I'm trying to figure out how to pin an extension to the address bar but can't find any way to do it in Settings. Am I missing something? Is there a keyboard shortcut I don't know about? Any tips greatly appreciated. I use both JAWS and NVDA if that matters.

Most of the #Chrome #accessibility issues in my previous post are caused by Microsoft's UI Automation (UIA) API. If you want an #NVDA add-on to completely disable UIA in Chrome windows, here you go:

In the wake of a certain ad-funded browser company bundling adtech into its browser :firefox: yet again, some people have been recommending Ungoogled-Chromium (UGC). I think it’s fine to recommend UGC with caveats, such as the fact that it disables component updates that include:

  • Certificate revocation. Chromium uses downloaded CRLSets for revocation; it does not support OCSP.
  • Out of band security patches. When browser components have exploits in the wild, they need to be patched ASAP; updating billions of installations within time-frames measured in hours often means restartless out-of-band updates.
  • Out of band certificate bundle updates.

If you assume Google uses its component update server logs maliciously, you may wish to consider a fork that still offers component updates provided by a different party’s servers.

UGC disabled mDNS at one point. This exposed local IP addresses over WebRTC for years, but they seem to have shipped a fix in May 2023 to disable non-proxied UDP.

UGC also disables the Chrome Web Store in favor of installing extensions out of band. Make sure you regularly update your extensions installed out-of-band, since UGC won’t do it on its own. Some scripts and a special extension re-implement some of this functionality.

Overall, UGC is still safer than QtWebEngine despite making heavy compromises to security for privacy (though I can’t see how either benefited from disabling mDNS: I’m not aware of threat models under which revealing a local IP to every application is preferable to revealing it to just Google). Running UGC is fine if you understand these trade-offs and have accounted for them. I use it in headless mode to run accessibility and performance tests.

Ready to break #Google's monopoly?

#Chrome Manifest V3 is here to stop you from blocking ads.

Here are great alternatives:

✅ #Firefox
✅ #Duckduckgo
@torproject
✅ More options: tuta.com/blog/best-private-bro…

Which one did you pick?

As expected, the Chromium intake person was unable to reproduce the issue (it may have been kit this time?), so I got 5 people to confirm and added a video:
issues.chromium.org/issues/342…

I really do hate how hard it is just to get a bug to get taken up.

I mean, I had to re-file this one because the original was closed due to not reading instructions:
issues.chromium.org/issues/342…

Anyway, thanks for those who helped.

Time to switch!

➡️ Google Chrome has started to limit ad blocking with Manifest V3.

➡️ Firefox and others still support uBlock Origin and uMatrix.

The fastest non-Google controlled web rendering engine Servo is trying to compete with only $1.6k funding a month:
phoronix.com/news/Servo-Engine…

Yes, they did have an NLNet grant, but that ran out.

If we want an alternative to Blink/Chrome, we need to fund it. This is a project where even a tiny regular amount could yield oversize returns:

Great news from @JanGrulich today. PipeWire camera patches are merged in Chromium and should be part of Chromium 127 (unless testing turns up something). This means both major browsers should have @pipewirep camera support soon. chromium-review.googlesource.c… #linux #fedora #chrome

Ok wtf. So you're telling me that #Google #Chrome's #V8 #JavaScript engine was more #insecure than #Mozilla's #Spidermonkey after all these years? Because I'm pretty sure SM has been already doing plenty of the things mentioned in this article (I've touched on SM code plenty of times, so much more than I wanted because I worked on separating Spidermonkey from the monolithic #libxul, it's still hurting my brain...), even before the #Quantum rewrite. So even #PaleMoon which has been commonly trashed for being "old and insecure" is apparently more secure than Chrome, but most crucially it also disproves the long-standing blind belief by security freaks out there that Chrome is "more secure" than #Firefox when it's the other way around on many fronts...

Google Chrome will make it much harder for ad blockers. 😤

This is the final drop, it needed to make everyone switch to a more private solution! 🥳🔒

Google announced that starting in June 2024, ad blockers such as uBlock Origin #uBO will be disabled in Chrome 127 and later with the rollout of Manifest V3 (#Mv3).

The new #Chrome manifest will prevent using custom filters and stops on demand updates of blocklist. Only #Google authorized updates to browser extension will be allowed in the future, which mean an automatic win for Google in their battle to stop YouTube #AdBlockers .

#ManifestV3 is deceitful and threatening to your privacy, and now is a good time to switch to #Firefox (@mozilla) and/or #TorBrowser (@torproject) if you haven't done so already!

EDIT for clarification: MV3 in Chrome will still allow some ad blocking extensions, but will severely limit their blocking ability and even restricts pre-set filters to 50 MAX.

Viewing this infographic about memorable events in Linux history, I re-realized that Android, ChromeOS and SteamOS are all based on Linux. 💪

Chrome just opted you into a load of ad tracking bullshit. Don't forget to go in and turn it all off, if you're a #Chrome user.

Wow, so the other day I shared what #Microsoft does when you search to download #Firefox from #Edge* but they go one step further for #Chrome.

(I have zero love for either surveillance capitalist but, my goodness, what absolute asshattery. Having spent more time than I’d like testing in #Windows these past two days, I constantly feel like some malevolent entity is trying to exploit me at every turn. Because one is. This OS is a case study in hostile #design.)

Here's a neat #Mastodon trick I just discovered:

You can access an RSS feed of any user's posts simply by adding .rss onto the end of their profile URL — so, for instance:

twit.social/@jr.rss

You can then use that link to follow all of that person's posts in Feedly, Feedbin, or any other RSS reading service.

Heck, you can even do it directly in #Chrome, if you want!
